It is smart and funny and so down-to-earth that you have to instantly like Betty as your best friend. Althouhg I am not a big fan of women titles (those seems to dominate the New York Times bestsellers list these days), I laughed out loud on a plane from Washington DC to Houston on a business trip. Who knew that everyday domestic issues can be so light and funny?
Anyway, just try it. You will find it more enjoyable than you want to admit.
Financial crunches, months of futile searching for a residence, the adjustment of Betty and her children to a life with a new husband and stepfather (whose attitudes are quite different from those of a carefree Bard), living on an island where there are too many visitors and far too little accessibility for daily work and school, a beautiful neighbour's having her eyes on one's husband - these could have been the stuff of whining or dreary "self-help" attitudes. Betty is far from sentimental, totally honest, yet approaches all from a highly positive attitude that nearly makes one envious. This book is also a fine reminder to today's concerned parents that having adolescent children was no joy ride, even 60 years ago.
My only criticism of Betty's writing is that, in her descriptions, she did not know when to stop. For example, her description of Vashon Island is engaging for the first two paragraphs, but rather excessive when it runs to several pages.
This is easily one of the funniest, and most honest, books I have ever read - and read I do, again and again, always finding it a refreshing treat.

Having said that, everyone is a unique individual and even with the Myers-Briggs 16 categories, those don't always fit perfectly.
I'm intrigued by books that discuss different ways that people relate to the Lord. I took the "test" and I came out "Popular Sanguine" and the 2nd highest was "Perfect Melancholy". Interestingly enough, the "reader from Chicago" down below tested the same way and her Myers-Briggs type is an ESFJ and so is mine!
Back to the subject at hand... I did read the whole book and even though certain sections didn't really talk about where I'm coming from at all, it helped me to understand how others may have a different format for their time alone with Jesus.
And I came to realize that, to the outside observer, and in the general world, I do have the traits of the Popular Sanguine. But when I'm relating to my Lord, I'm much more of a Perfect Melancholy!
Betty and Marita give many good examples of how the different types might structure (or not structure) their devotional lives and they even suggest particular books, devotionals, Bible versions/formats and even journaling techniques.
The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that I think a personality profile with only 4 types is over-simplified, even when it is pointed out that very few people are totally one type.
Thank you, authors, for writing this fascinating book! I'll look forward to more from you!

Signed, Popular Sanguine with a heavy Perfect Melancholy attribute in relation to my devotional life, and also an ESFJ on the Myers-Briggs!
Most often, well meaning people just don't understand why you don't see things their way! Rather than suggesting alternative paths they make you feel like there is something wrong with you since you don't see things from their perspective. You will learn that by and large, we each have personality traits that explain our spiritual search. This book will help you analyze your traits and the common benefits or difficulties of those traits. You will learn about yourself and that your thougths are quite common among many others who share your traits.
I would consider this book a sleeper - I doubt it will get the attention it deserves.

However, about one out of every five recipes I try is a dud. Even if the recipe is loaded with flavorful ingredients, they seem to cancel each other out and leave a bland mess. And sometimes I feel the cookbook doesn't provide clear enough directions for the recipes, and as a result I get, well, bad results (incorrect textures, thicknesses, etc.) even though I'm more than a novice cook.
Still, don't let this stop you from purchasing this book. There are so many good recipes in it that I recommend it to anyone I know who's interested in eating in a more healthy way. Enjoy!
In short, my favorite cookbook for the busy cook looking to serve interesting, healthy dinners to his or her family.

There are a few minor inaccuracies...for example, an abandoned camp along Butte Valley Road is listed as being abandoned since the early 80's, but a marker at the site says it was abandoned in 1988. Also, though the book covers most roads in the park, it hardly mentions a few, including the (difficult!) road from Eureka Valley to Saline via Steele Pass. This omission won't be a problem for most readers, since the vast majority will stick to the paved roads. And the author writes about the paved roads with the same detail and enthusiasm as the unpaved ones.
Some remarks are downright mysterious and leave the reader hungry for more. For example, when describing the features of a particular road, the author says "a few maps show a 'Marble Bath' but no one can agree on where or what it is." Well...?!? Has the author seen this landmark? Can he tell us what SOME people think it is? Give us a hint!
While the book is very good at telling you exactly where to find major landmarks, there are no maps. Even though the book describes in words where to turn, what route to take, etc., a map would be most helpful. This omission can be rectified by visiting your AAA travel center.
But don't let these flaws stop you from buying the book. If you're going to Death Valley, and especially if you're taking an unpaved, backcountry road, this book is an invaluable resource.
One suggestion: get a map to use with this book. The book itself has only tiny outline-maps of the various trips described imposed on small silhouettes of Death Valley. A map will help you get an overview of where you are and where you want to go. A map will make it easier to plan your itinerary. I used Tom Harrison's excellent map of Death Valley, which you can score at outdoor-oriented stores. When you pay your user-fee at the park, they also will give you a simple map.
Enjoy.
secrets with in the book's Repitoire in my journal. The
place itself is amazing to know how much of Death Valley that
we never knew before. Not only the book, but the place itself,
must have a lot hidden secrets and the geography of the place
that makes it astonishing. The book is really a piece of
ancient art,especially Death Valley itself.
Throughout, the captivity of Death Valley, the stunningly
beautiful sceneries. The amount of plants, flowers, and the
nature of it, can really bloom out in fantastic shades and colors. I always thought, that Death Valley is a good National
Park to visit, but not to live in. I felt the amirition of
the book's scriptures based on the National Park, as
overwellming, and someday I wsh to to become an American
Female Archeologist and explore more of Death Valley. There
are still more to be discovered, that remains a mystery.
That's what Death Valley means to me. The place itself
remains a mystery.

A lot of variety, color photographs on quite a few of the pages, and suggestions on how to modify recipes for non-vegetarians will help those who are new to vegetarian cooking OR (like me) are not sure how to make meatless dishes that my spouse will like. And best of all, most of the recipes have a relatively quick preparation time! Yay!
I rate this 4 stars instead of 5 because most of the recipes are very high in sodium. For those with heart problems, you'll definitely need to modify the recipes accordingly. Otherwise, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a simple, no-fuss approach to tasty vegetarian cooking.
