Angie Nevers thought she and her husband, Bud, had a good life and a strong marriage, until the night of their twenty-fifth anniversary party, when a beautiful young woman she had never seen came to the party and her husband seemed very upset. But before she has a chance to talk to him and find out who the woman was and what she wanted, Bud is killed in a car accident. When she finds a letter from the young woman, telling Bud that she knows he is her father and that she wants money, she is devastated. But when the police tell her that Bud's death was murder and that there is money missing from his company, she feels like her whole life has become a lie. And things get even worse when his partner begins to act very strange, even to the point of hitting his wife, Angie thinks that things can't get any worse, until she finds out that the mother of Bud's alleged daughter is one of her oldest and most trusted friends.

With the help of her best friend and a policeman who is in love with her, Angie sets out to get her life back, clear her husband's name and find his killer. Angie soon realizes that this could be a very dangerous decision, not just for her, but for her friends as well as they find themselves up against a killer who will stop at nothing to get what they want.

Angie Nevers is a remarkable character that you will enjoy very much. As her life spirals more and more out of control and the lies told to her for years by the people she trusted the most begin to pile, she makes the decision to fight for what is hers and for what she believes is right. Filled with plenty of action, mystery and plot twists, this is one that you will be recommending to all your friends.

Timeless Tales review
By TT reviewer Elaine Leite
You could say that Bud Nevers has it all. Bud has a beautiful wife of twenty-five years, Angie. He owns his own business, Nevers Computer Technology. Bud's best friend, Ken Weber, is his business partner. Things always look better from the outside looking in.

At the Nevers' anniversary party, Bud and Angie are entertaining all of their guest when the door bell rings. With the housekeeper, Marty, in the kitchen and Bud conversing with guests, Angie goes to get the door. She is caught off guard by the beautiful tall blonde stranger with the most piercing green eyes that she has ever seen. She introduces herself as Melinda and informs Angie that she is sorry for being so late and that she is here for Bud. Angie rushes over to her husband and informs him that a young stranger named Melinda has arrived. Bud leads Melinda outside. Angie could see that Bud is angry with Melinda. Angie starts to fear the worst. Could Bud be having an affair?

At Nevers Computer Technology, Bud has hired on an intern, Bill Crane, who is really eager to learn. As Bill is going through paperwork he comes across a questionable entry in the accounting books. ABC Wafer Company would take fifty-thousand dollars out on the same day every month for the past year. After looking at the stock market, Bill realizes that ABC Wafer Company must not be a real company. Bill explains to Bud what he has discovered. Bud knows that someone in the company is embezzling money from his company. Bud contacts his auditors to take care of this problem and informs his CEO, Ken Weber, about the discovery.

Just when Bud thinks that things can't get worse, Ken and Sandy Weber's twin girls are in an accident. For the next week, Angie helps Sandy take care of the twins. To Bud, the week is a big blur. He is sure that his problems only come in threes, Melinda showing up at the house, the problem with ABC Wafer Company, and now the Weber twins. Angie finally decides to confront Bud about Melinda after his golf game with Ken. But Bud never makes it home. Angie, scared and unsure of what to do, calls her friend Tom Hoffman, who is a detective. Angie's biggest fears come true. Bud is dead, but the worst part is that he was murdered.

Murder.com is one of the best books that I have read in a while. I could not put the book down. I wanted to find out who did it. When I found out I was blown away. Murder.com has so many twists and turns that it grabs a hold of you and does not let go. Ms. la Pierre has got herself a winner here. I will recommend this book to everyone I know.

A real winner.
The minute you open MURDER.COM you are hooked. The story grabs you. The characters grab you. And you are doomed until you read that last page. Even then you keep thinking about it.

Bud and Angie Nevers decide to have a group of friends in to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. The party was going beautifully. Everyone was having a great time talking, and just enjoying themselves, when the doorbell rings. Angie goes to answer it. At the door is a very beautiful woman, with green eyes that are unlike any she has ever seen. The woman says her name is Melinda, and asks if Bud is home, and could she speak to him. Angie, although her curiosity is aroused, goes and tells Bud that there is a young woman at the door who wishes to speak to him. Upon hearing her name, Bud rushes to the door, and takes her outside to speak to her. From that moment on nothing is the same for Angie, or Bud.

Angie decides that she has to find out who this woman is, and why she showed up unannounced to talk to her husband. However, before she can do this the children of Bud's business partner, Ken, are in a school bus accident, and Angie has to help Sandy, Ken's wife. So she puts the questions she has on hold until after the children can recuperate from their injuries.

Finally after the children have recuperated, and Sandy is able to handle things pretty much on her own again, Angie decides she will ask Bud who Melinda is. And just what she wanted out of him. At the same time, and on his own, Bud has decided that he will come clean with Angie, and hope that she will understand. But before this can happen, Bud is found dead in what appears to be an automobile accident.

Angie is devastated. Thank goodness she has Marty to help her out. Marty is more than just Angie's housekeeper, she has also been her friend since she was a child.

Angie cannot believe that the accident was just that, an accident. She knows Bud too well. In fact she doesn't believe that it was Bud's burned body in the car in the first place. So she enlists the help of one of Bud's, and her, friends, Tom Hoffman, who happens to be a police detective to help her find out just what is going on.

From that moment on, things get really out of hand.

The reader is taken on a journey that has more twists and turns than a mountain road. There are characters you will absolutely detest, those that you will love, and even more that you will admire. Angie is a woman who has the strength of ten, but at the same time a gentle way about her that draws you to her. Marty's loyalty is so strong, that you can only love her, and hope that she will come out of this whole thing on top. In fact every character in MURDER.COM has his, or her, own personality that draws the reader to them.

More than once I thought I had the story figured out. In fact I was positive. Only to find out I couldn't have been more wrong.

Ms LaPierre has written a wonderful story. She ties all the pieces together and they make perfect sense. But you still can't figure it out until she lets you. And you won't be able to put the book down until she does.

I recommend that you pick up a copy of MURDER.COM, but when you do, don't open it until you have nothing else planned for a few hours. Because if you do, whatever you had planned will not get done. You will be held captive to the story that unfolds on these pages.

I can't wait to open another of Ms LaPierre's books. Although it is going to be very hard for her to top MURDER.COM.

Put "personal publicity" on your mentoring agenda!
Being your own mentor is a critical concept and certainly includes mastering the art of networking. But a good self-mentoring plan must also include achieving corporate and community visibility. To really take charge of your career there is no substitute for creating a strategic 'personal' publicity plan. Your boss won't do it, and neither will your mentor. It is up to YOU. People have to know who you are, what you stand for, and why they should hire you, promote you, or do business with you. That's really taking charge of your career.

Advice Helpful to Women at All Stages of Career
I bought the book "Be Your Own Mentor" during a transitional time in my career. The advice offered has provided me with many great ideas on advancing my career. I thought the get ahead basics were especially helpful. As I was looking for a new position, the job search advice helped me to form opinions on how this new position could be a stepping stone to my future. It urged me to take a look at my career as a progression of jobs on my resume. Additionally, Sheila Wllington offered advice that I had not read in traditional job search books. I think this book is helpful to women at all stages of their career whether just starting out or ready for a mid-career change. If you think you need some advice from successful women and need some ideas on how to further your career I highly recommend this book.

A must read for women in business
I wish this book had been around when I was just starting out in business. I would be a lot better off today if I had gotten the great advice it gives out. Much of the writing is based on research done at Catalyst, so is fact-based. Shelia Wellington uses her vast experience and connections to give a road map for success for women in the business world. Many nuggets of advice from women who have reached the highest levels in their careers. A must read.

Caninestein : Unleashing the Genius in YOUR Dog

Be happy with your canine pals without dumbing them down
What a neat book! The authors give a brief "intelligence test" for your dog and then tell how to make use of whatever intelligence your dog has (including emotional intelligence) to reward the lives of you and your dog(s). The authors seem to feel that you have to be realistic about the intelligence level of your animals -- you can't assume they have too much, but you shouldn't assume they don't need mental stimulation, either. Their tips don't take a great deal of your time and the authors provide suggestions for making the best use of the time you do have together.
We tried their tips and were amazed at how much our animals seemed to enjoy them, and the dogs seemed to sense we were giving them time, stimulation, and credit. One caveat -- if you teach them how to do tricks, make sure they "only use their knowledge for good and never for evil" (i.e. if you teach them how to climb things, don't forget to use additional safeguards for your things!).

Towards a Smarter, better trained Dog
Those who love canines will enjoy this book. It aids one to measure and stimulate the learning abilities of dogs.

Through a series of tests, the owner is brought to an understanding of the dog's relative learning abilities. This is supplemented by activities to develop and enhance the dog's gifts and intellect.

Dogs are smart, they just see and learn things in different ways than humans. That's at the beginning for all dog owners to tune into. The games and activities provided help this process in providing fun stuff to do as we hang out with our canine pals.

My two just love these things, as they do most anything we do with them, short of toenail trims, etc.

A valuable little book for the canine world.

A MUST read. Increase the IQ of your pet and have fun!
This book is creative, challenging, informative, but most of all it is fun! This book will open up another window of understanding and excitement for your and your pooch!

Betty Fisher is a talented and creative trainer in my area. If you are tired of reaching for the same old training books then this is the book for you!

Coming Alive from Nine to Five: A Career Search Handbook

Good for right and left brained...
This book is a well balanced text for all career searchers. It is filled with solid information, great exercises, humor, practical steps, and hope. I use it as a primary text for the Career Exploration, [Community College] class that I teach. It is also used at other institutions.

The text is currently in revision which will make it a 5 Star Text. I would recommend you purchase the new 7th edition, to be released this summer.

Wonderful book
I loved that book. It is kind of hard. betty is a nut though i think she needs to review her work. Some of the work is no longer correct. Life has changed alittle since this book was written, at least in my expericence.

The most valuable career-development tool around!
I had taken a number of career definition tests in my career as an employment counselor (trying to figure out what was my true calling and how I could earn more money). Then I did the work in Michelozzi's book and came up with the scoring that indicated I would be good at counseling/social work (which I was already doing) or contract negotiations. I didn't even know what a contract negotiator was!

I discussed this outcome with my friend who worked at a large corporation. She introduced me to the head of their contracts department. I interviewed him and his staff about the work they were doing. They happened to have a trainee position open (which paid more than what I was getting as a counselor). Now, eighteen years later, I can truly say that Betty Michelozzi's book, Coming Alive from Nine to Five, is the one book which has completely turned my life around. I have loved almost every day of my changed career and I am far better paid at this work than I would e! ver have been as a counselor.

I recommend this book to all of my acquaintances who suspect it is time to change careers--and I recommend it to you. Thank you, Betty, for this truly wonderful opus!

From the Danube to the Pacific
Published in Paperback by Forward Press (15 December, 1998)
Author: Betty Zentall
Amazon base price: $22.50
Average review score:

Compelling portrait of a European woman's life around WWII.
Betty Zentall's saga proves that behind seemingly ordinary faces are stories of extraordinary breadth and power. I felt as though I might have been a sibling watching Betty grow into a successful business woman and loving wife. The book also provided a human-sized view of the sweeping turmoil of the Second World War. The passages on the family repeatedly being forced to flee the spreading Nazi forces bring home the chaos and terror that was Europe during the late 1930s and 40s.

The amazing Aigner family
I could not put this book down. It was given to me as a gift by Betty's great nephew, a friend of mine for 25 years. Although I know many of the members of the family and the book has a personal touch for me I believe it represents the stories of so many Jewish families and their struggle to escape Europe at an infamous time in history. The resilience of this family and others in the same situation is truely admirable. It is a life lesson for us all. Bravo Betty!

Engrossing personal WWII story.
"I have just finished this book, and I am overwhelmed...because it's so full, so that it feels more like an experience for the reader (rather) than an entertainment."

Hello Mrs. Piggle Wiggle

Cute, humorous, but dated
I read the Ms. Piggle-Wiggle books in second & third grade & enjoyed them, but now as an adult & writer, I leafed through the books again recently & find them to be unrealistic & dated. You can tell the books are set WAY back in the olden days(1950's) where people were more ignorant in general & wanted to fantasize about "perfect" traditional WASP families where all the Mommies were happy housewives who never held a job & all the Daddies rushed off to work five mornings a week & divorce, sex, peer pressure, & poverty are unheard of. The magic parts are appealing to kids of any era. But then that magic was played out in the conservative fantasy of having the children cured of faults, creating "perfect" children who gave parents no trouble. Especially troubling is the story about the "crybaby". In the end when the girl was cured of crying so much, she promised her parents, "I'm never going to cry again. No matter what happens." That might give a wrong message to highly sensitive kids who cry easily. Mary Anne Spier of the BSC series & the biggest crier in Stoneybrook, Connecticut was lucky not to be around back then! So...parents: before you read these with your kids make sure they understand that these stories are influenced by the suburbia feminine mystique fantasies that plagued most of the US in the fifties. Another word of warning: spanking is presented as acceptable in these books. The books could be used as a catalyst of discussion in classrooms & families about how people idealized how life "should" be...then & today.

Very Funny
I have read this tory to students in my class ranging from kindergartners to third graders. All of my students have enjoyed the story and went on to read the other titles as well. The humor used in the book is very good. Children can relate to some of the problems Miss Piggly Wiggly cures. We even used her humor in class as we decided how some of our personalities fit with the children's in the story. I would highly recommend this story as a read aloud for younger children or independent reading for third grade and higher.

Delightful And Funny
This is a delightful and funny book for children. I read it a few years ago and thought to myself, this is a funny book, but adults shouldn't really read it because they might not like it like me. It's childish humor about an old lady who likes children. Buy this for your children.

Legacies: A Chinese Mosaic
Published in Audio Cassette by Publishing Mills (August, 1991)
Authors: Betty Bao Lord and Bette Bao Lord
Amazon base price: $15.95
Average review score:

Untitled
Written by the wife of former ambassador to China, Winston Lord, whe was present in the spring of 1989 as CBS reporter for the Tiananmen Square Massacre. Much of the book is presented as voices of family and friends relating their trials thru the maze and terror of Chinese party policies, particularly the Cultural Revolution in 1966-1976. She brings peasant and intellectual together, as their descriptions of their perplexity and suffering differ little. However, the book itself is a maze of time zones, especially in regard to her own history. I found it increasingly difficult to keep it all straight. Would have been much better in a normal linear form. I think she sacrificed clarity for style. Interweaving is popular now, but here it doesn't work. But she shows quite well a society where one day's solid ground is tomorrow's quicksand.

Painful stories of the Cultural Revolution
Bao Lord's book is a montage of stories about her family and friends in China against first, the backdrop of the Cultural Revolution, and then Tienamen Square in 1989. There have been many books that have come out in the 1990's on the Cultural revolution, an unimaginably painful period of 10 years in China during which Mao Zedong turned the people against one another as a way of deflecting challenges to his own power. The country descended into chaos as the Red Guard, basically a group of millions of teenagers set loose, destroyed everything in its path. Thirty million people died during this period! It is hard to imagine living through what Bao Lord's characters have endured--betrayal by relatives and friends, the death of a child, imprisonment for no reason, torture, the destruction of education, art and culture--it goes on and on. Many of these stories are told in the characters' own words, transcribed from audio tapes sent to her by people who wanted their stories told. The stories of Bao Lord's own family are equally absorbing, especially of her grandmother, who defied tradition and paid the price.

I listened to the audio version of this book, read by the author. Generally I find that professional readers do a better job, but this book was an exception--Bao Lord reads with great emotion in a slightly inflected voice but otherwise no acccent. She does an excellent job.

Anyone traveling to China is well-advised to read several memoirs of modern China. It is easy to look at China today and see rapid modernization, signs of free enterprise, and a bustling economy. Books like Bao Lord's remind us that China has a long way to go.

Flawless
This is the most amazing book I read in a while, in touch me in all the ways possible. I simply love this book so much. It is a story telling that one could not be found anywhere else. Bette Bao Lord surpasses Amy Tan with Spring Moon. Peerless in its artisry and beauty, Lord has done wonders.

Invitations

A vanity piece--no real tips or suggestions for the reader.
While his work is lovely, I was hoping to find suggestions I could use to jumpstart my own creative ideas, not examine his portfolio. Regrettably, all examples in this book could only be accomplished by hiring a team of designers. If you've got a creative bug and want to craft your own simple, modest, engaging invitations and you're looking for some inspiration, some groovy "how-to"--Forget this book. There's nothing here you can actually implement.

Awsome Ideas!
I Rented this book from my local library. I jumped into it when i was asked to create my sister's wedding invitations. I got some awsome ideas from this book. Yes it is true that not all of the things in this book can be done by one person with out a professional team or printer, however, if you're clever enough you can still pull pieces and parts to put together your own.
The wedding invitations I made were a success and now everyone is talking about them! The invitations are the first impression people get about your party so it is very important to make them believe they have to attend!

A real treasure chest of inspiration & ideas!
I'm an everyday person and a young, busy professional but when I'm entertaining, I want every personal and social event that I put on to have a touch of the extraordinary...otherwise, why bother?

Some might think that this is just a "vanity piece" but the ideas in this book aren't really there for you to duplicate; they show you what "can be" and offer a wealth of inspiration to those of us who don't want to send out pre-packaged Hallmark invites!

After getting this book a few weeks ago, I've lent it out twice and I've already adapted an idea or two from the book and also created some of my own to put extraordinary, unique touches on my wedding and pre-wedding party invites and print materials...and so can you!

As far as I'm concerned, the details he includes about the expensive celebrity parties are a fringe benefit...It doesn't mean that special invites are reserved for such lavish events. It's just an added touch of fun gossipy stuff like you'd see in "People" or "In Style" magazines!

Great job Marc Friedland!

Life So Far : A Memoir
Published in Hardcover by Simon & Schuster (May, 2000)
Author: Betty Friedan
Amazon base price: $26.00
Average review score:

A Look Back
This is a courageous book written by a courageous woman. The story is of a life that continues to endure despite many hardships. If Betty Friedan had been less bright, one wonders if her life would have been easier. My personal favorite part in the book is that of her childhood. One can see her development as a feminist. When one is involved in raising daughters, I feel there is alot to learn in this book. As an aunt with four young nieces, I see the great responsibility one has in raising women to become leaders in the world today. That is why I recommend this book for library use.

a remarkable woman's journey
Betty Freidan comes through clearly in her book---superbright, sensitive, vital, a woman who has taken great pleasure in men, children, writing, and the women's movement she sparked in l963 with the publication of "The Feminist Mystique." She's good company, as frank about her foibles as she is about her gifts and accomplishments. Unlike the extremists who entered the women's movement after her, she is balanced and moderate. "I've always thought of women's liberation as men's liberation as well." She says about what she might want on her gravestone, "She helped make a world where women feel good about being women and free to really love men." A recurring motif in her memoir is what she calls her "Jewish existential conscience", a feeling that she has to use her life to make the world better. (The "Christian correlation" might be, Jesus' parable of the use of talents.) She has indeed been a friend to women----and to men--everywhere.

Must Read
A must read for those of us who were lucky enough to come of age in the 60s. Friedan left me with a profound sense of gratitude. Because of NOW's vigilance, I had the "right" to carry my daughter to term without being fired from my job as a high school teacher in 1974 . Because of the movement's persistance, I had the "right" to seek and obtain a job as a Superintendent of Schools in a market that was 90 percent dominated by men. Friedan's words inspire me to do more to improve conditions for children and families.

Calling All Editors!
While I usually enjoy books of this particular genre, Betty J. Eadie's "The Ripple Effect" was disturbing. She describes the death of her baby daughter from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome in heartbreaking terms. The scene in the book touched me deeply - until I happened to describe it to an expert on Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, who said, "What she is describing is physically impossible." Who EDITS some of these books anyway? Who PUBLISHES these books without at least doing enough preliminary checking of the facts to see how plausible the events described within really are?

Questions answered!
After reading Embraced by the Light and The Awakening Heart, I was inspired and intrigued by Betty Eadie's near death experience and her journey to the other side. However, I still had many questions. The Ripple Effect has answered most of them and is a definite 'must have' whether you're a follower of Betty's writings or just curious. Not only does it provide the answers but also gives insight as to why we're here and what we can do to spread the love and goodness that our earthly world so desperately needs. I highly recommend this truly wonderful book. The world would indeed be a better place if everyone read it and abided by 'the ripple effect'.

Supreme Reading
I was inspired by this book. I have read her other 2 books and found those to be great. Particularly her first book "Embraced by the Light". Her second book was still good but not in the same league as Embraced. This book almost gets back up to that par, worth reading and re-reading and re-reading again. However, I would suggest reading her books in order Embraced by The Light then the Awakening Heart and then The Ripple Effect. I strongly reccomend them.
