Betty Garrett and Other Songs

Lovely book from a lovely lady!
Betty's wit, wisdom and reflections prove that there's a lot more to her than a pretty face and wise-cracks. Talent, sensitivity and grace make her a beautiful author with something important to say. Show business enthusiasts and historians alike will greatly enjoy her story. And, since her career is enjoying a recent resurgence, we can only hope she'll write a sequel, soon!

Beautifully written.
I have loved the movies of both Betty Garrett and Larry Parks for years, and now feel that I have read their love story. Betty's descriptions of her multi-faceted career and personal life were written with humor, warmth, and love. She and Larry endured the 'unofficial' blacklist and other obstacles together, and showed what "in good times and in bad" really meant. I admire and adore them both even more now. Her book is a wonderful read and her career isn't even over.

Great Book!
I like Betty Garrett very much! From Laverne & Shirley, All In The Family-very funny! I like that the book is her autobiography! I can't wait to read all about the life & times of the lovely Betty Garrett! I also have David L. Lander's autobiography & the unofficial Penny Marshall book! Any one who's a fan of "Laverne & Shirley" e-mail me @: tiff_lisatony7@yahoo.com. We can chat about Betty, Penny, David, Cindy, Michael, Phil, & evrything else related to "Laverne & Shirley".

Get it while it's been remaindered...
...as it will go up significantly in price when it goes out of print. A gorgeous resource, with excellent photographs of Vionnet's dresses and, notably, the inclusion of scale patterns for many of the dresses depicted. One of the best available monographs on a designer from this time period.

Simply Wonderful!
I knew that I would love this book, but I did not know how much. The format is great. The pictures are nice and clear, and BIG. This book makes me wish I was alive in the 20's and 30's. Well worth the price.

Exceptional insight into bias construction. Amazing book!
Probably the best book I have read on bias construction. Decribes many of the techniques Vionnet used, like rules for mixing bias with straight weaves. The scale patterns are a major plus.

Oh, Kentucky!

Oh, Kentuchy!
Oh, Kentucky! by Betty Layman Receveur is a story about how life was in the early years of Kentucky as a family moves to this territory and experiences perils, heartbreak, and grief.

The wilderness that was Kentucky early on and the founding of Fort Boonesborough are but part of the story as told through the eyes of Kitty Gentry. Travelling through Cumberland Gap and onto the sacred hunting ground of the dangerous Shawnee the author keeps us riveted to the heartwrenching story... filled with love and hope... an undying will to make a home out of the green wilderness... we find passion.

This soty is very compelling and you will find yourself engrossed and wanting to find out what happens next. This story is fiction, but it gives the reader a real life depiction of how perilous life was at that time. As Kentucky's population continues to grow, becoming a state is now on the minds of the people. We find Kitty fighting for survival along side the men, but later find find her fighting for schools as the realities of real life begin to take over the wilderness.

This is a very well told story and you will not want to put the book down, full of emotion and real life.

Oh, Kentucky!
This story was full of life-like characters, with emotions that I could relate to. A wonderful portrayal of early America, and the brave people who struggled to make our nation what it is today. It brought history to life.

Didn't want it to end
As a history buff and a fan of historical fiction, I have a hard time finding realistic but interesting novels. This one fits the bill. It doesn't always protect the lead characters to the point of disbelief and the colorful details allow you to picture the hardships and grime as well as the romance of the era.

The best cookbook for entertaining
By all means buy this cookbook! My sisters and I hosted a bridal shower for 30 guests and totally copied the Buffet Dinner with Friends menu. It turned out beautifully. I have tried several other recipes and all have been outstanding. Ms. Sims gives thorough directions for all the recipes and helps with pre-party planning. You will turn to this cookbook first when you want something special.

One of the Best
I am a yankee but sure do want to be a southerner after reading this cookbook. The recipes are so easy and not all need exotic ingredients but easy to find items at the local grocery store. The sidebars are very entertaining. I hope to host my first catered party for friends in the spring. This is one cookbook that will be out on the kitchen counter all the time.

Lives up to it's name!
I received this as a gift and what a treat! The recipes are easy yet unbelievably delicious. The categories are nice in that they provide menus for each one. Beautiful artwork as well. Extremely well written. Would recommend to all! I plan on returning the favor to a few friends as well.

Fun and delicious!
Every recipe in this outstanding cookbook is easy to make and delicious to eat! This book is in colour with lots of pictures, so you can decide what to bake based on how the cake looks as well as how the recipe sounds.

From quick "bake-and-take" cakes for church potlucks, to elaborately designed masterpieces for parties and weddings, to brunch cakes, this book has it all! Why no try the decadent Tres Leches Cake, or the fun Chocolate-Chip Cookie Surprise Cake, or maybe you want a cake in the shape of a train. This book has it all!

Added Features Make This A Best of Class Cake Mix Cookbook
This cookbook comes in a handy spiral-bound edition, so there is no propping pages open with bags of flour or pounds of butter (as I have been caught doing in the past). The book is also completely printed in full-color, so the pictures are bright and glossy. About 80% of the recipes include a picture of the finished product.

There is an intriguing introduction where the authors take you on a journey through the mystical world of cake mixes. They begin in 1943 in the Betty Crocker labs and kitchens, and move from there through the trends of the 1960's and into the future of cake mixes in the 21st century. The pictures and magazine ads they reproduce in this book are historical and fun. Before the recipes begin, there is a how-to section on preparing your pans, servings per cake, how to cool and split (torte) a cake, frosting and glazing cakes, and even high-altitude baking. Page 15 features a "Customer Q&A" about the SuperMoist cake mixes.

The recipes are divided into chapters: Bake-and-Take, Wonderfully Indulgent, Special Celebrations, Heavenly Holidays, Come for Brunch, Scrumptious Desserts, Easy Cookies and Bars, and Fabulous frostings and Glazes. The cookbook also adds sections on Helpful Nutrition and Cooking Information, and an alphabetical Index.

The Heavenly Holidays sections features cakes for beginning cake decorators. These cakes require no previous cake decorating experience, and look beautiful. There are chocolate heart cakes for Valentine's Day (no heart pan needed!), an adorable Easter Bunny, a Flag Day cake made with fresh fruit, a Jack O' Lantern cake (no 3-D cake pan needed), and even Rudolph Cupcakes which can be made with children.

My favorite recipe from this cookbook is on page 18, Chocolate Turtle Cake. If you like the combination of nuts with chocolate, this recipe is for you! The recipe has a full-color picture, a tip for serving, and nutritional information. All of the recipes in this cookbook feature nutritional information. The turtle cake recipe calls for a devil's food cake mix, water, oil, eggs, caramels, evaporated milk, pecans, and chocolate chips. The recipe requires a bit of planning as caramels are not a staple item that I keep on hand. The final product, however, is well worth the planning. The cake is moist, gooey, and a favorite for entertaining, especially when served warm.

The Chocolate Graham Streusel Cake on page 20 is a classic recipe from the 1970's. The recipe features an advertisement that was used in the 1970's, a tip for glazing the cake, nutritional information, and a yellow graham variation. The recipe calls for graham cracker crumbs, nuts, brown sugar, cinnamon, butter, devil's food cake mix, water, oil, eggs, and a recipe of glaze (provided on page 242). This recipe was a heavier, denser cake than normal, and as such, it was a little dry. It's a good recipe for a morning brunch or family coffee-style cake.

Even without a picture for every single recipe, this cookbook is an excellent value. The recipes are tried-and-true winners, and are family-friendly. The nutritional information for each recipe and the dietary guidelines in the back are an added bonus, it is a feature that most cake mix cookbooks prefer to gloss over. The full-color printing, alphabetical index, and spiral binding make this cookbook easy to use. A winner!

No need to know how to bake...
I am not a baker nor a cook for that matter and was quite nervous when my sister asked me if i could host my nephew's playgroup last saturday at my house. Rather than just buy cupcakes from my local bakery I decided to be daring and try to make something...so glad to have found this book...I made the cookies & cream torte and no one could believe it came from a box mix...it was incredible and not only the kids loved it but the parents did too!! (I can't wait to make this again just for me!!)

Splendid book about Mother Russia, the way moscow was captured during the Viet Nam war was amazing. Us reds will never go wrong when we read such good books. Remember we must be who we are chosen to be and not who we want to be.

A girl and her cat
Back Cover description: Alone in the world, without a job. That was Suzannah Lightfoot's unenviable position when Guy Bowers-Bentinck rescued her. She had to accept his help--though she didn't want to be beholden to such an infuriatingly arrogant man. "He's so tiresome and ill-tempered and impatient and he must hate the sight of me," Suzannah reflected as fate kept throwing them together. So it was just as well, she told herself, that she wasn't prepared to join the queue of females wanting to marry him...

Nice, pleasant Betty Neels story. The heroine and hero are typical, and likable. The story moves along, and all is well at the end. You can always count on Ms. Neels for a heart-warming story.

This Romance Rocks!
If you like Betty Neels and haven't read The Chain of Destiny yet then I strongly recommend that you get hold of a copy of this terrific book and read all about Suzannah and Guy and hopefully you will find this book as captivating as I did. The book is awesome and it rocks!

Just as good as those steamy Historical Romances!
Betty Neels is one of my favorite romance book authors and The Chain of Destiny is my favorite of her books and of all of The Betty Neels books that I have read Suzannah is my favorite of her heroines as I felt that I could relate to her, and I also liked the hero Guy, he was a little over bearing at first but not too obnoxious and Betty just made you feel how Suzannah and Guy were absolutely right for each other. Some people put Betty Neels books down because they aren't steamy but being a fan of romance books I generally like them all from the steamy ones that are so popular to the more old fashioned ones like this book that are just as good as the steamy ones.

A Pretty Good Ghost Mystery For Kids
While her parents are away in Alaska, 10-year-old Christina Cooper is sent to live with her unpleasant Uncle Ralph in his old lakeside house, a place that looks haunted to Christina. And she's right. During her first day there, she sees a little boy in a sailor suit standing on the pier--and then the next minute he disappears. This is just the first of many appearances the ghost makes, and it's up to Christina to find out why he's still hanging around the old house.

When I was younger, this was one of my favorite books, but after rereading it, I was a little disappointed. I had remembered "Christina's Ghost" being a scary ghost story, but it's more of a murder mystery than a horror story. In it, Christina must try to solve a 30-year-old double homicide over some stolen, valuable stamps so the young boy's soul can be put to rest. Not very exciting compared to an evil haunted house, but I don't think younger readers will really mind. Recommended for 9 to 12-year-olds.

Chills as you Read
This book is about a girl and her uncle that stay in this house for a while, but as they do they find two special guest there. I recommend this book to people who like scary and mysterious books. I like this book because I like to get chills every once in a while. I also like this book because I love mysterious books on Halloween and any other times and to read before bed.

AWESOME
I think this book is excellent! You feel as though you are right there in the story. I reccomend this to anyone who needs a book to read on a rainy day. I also reccomend Betty Ren Wright's other books too

Tucson Hiking Guide

Good, but...
The text for the descriptions of the hikes is fantastic. The directions are generally good, although the directions to a lot of the Sabino Canyon hikes is a little lacking.

What really irritates me about this book is the trail profiles. For example, the Agua Caliente trail profile begins at an elevation of 5420'. It ends at 5420'. It goes up in the middle, but it is nearly impossible to tell how far -- there are no other elevation marks besides the first and last. This pattern is repeated on a number of different profiles, and is the only thing that prevents me from giving 5 stars.

Those familiar with reading topo maps may be able to decipher altitudes, but for the rest of us the profiles are useless on many hikes.

Journies past superb scenic mountain vistas
Now in a thoroughly updated second edition, Tucson Hiking Guide by experienced Tucson hiker Betty Leavengood offers thirty-four hikes grouped by mountain range, and ranked from easy to difficult. Most of these journies past superb scenic mountain vistas are only a short drive from downtown Tucson. Maps, photos, elevation/distance profiles, trail access information, historical notes, personal anecdotes, and much, much more fill this solid and thorough guide from cover to cover enabling anyone to see and experience the natural splendor of the Tucson area on foot.

A guide good enough to read as BOOK!
Each trail has a profile, topo map, and other trail data including distance and difficulty. Descriptions are complete and very well done. There is a good balance of trails surrounding Tucson. Honestly though... research is outstanding! Trail history digs deep to find out how the trail names came about. Information on the Pontatoc Trail name set my mind at ease having grown up in Oklahoma. Several trails sparked my interest having seen little information previously in print. Highly recommended for all and a must have for Tucson residents - joe bartels Webmaster - HikeArizona.COM
