Funny, warm remembrance of depression Seattle, Wa.
Betty MacDonald has been one of my favorite authors since I first read "The Egg and I" in junior high. "Anybody Can do Anything" is a poignant yet funny account of making things do during depression Seattle. Betty's large and varied family life, her attempts at finding jobs and then, once found, keeping the wages earned reminds me of how difficult things must have been during this era. Ms. MacDonald is one of my all-time favorite authors, giving me many hours of enjoyment and many quotes to amuse my friends

But Nobody Is Funnier Than Betty
I discovered Betty MacDonald when I was about twelve years old, after checking The Egg and I out of the Carmichael Branch library here in Sacramento, about 22 years after it was first published. My parents had mentioned that the egg ranch Betty lived on with her first husband in the 1920s, which she writes about in The Egg and I, was located some miles from the place where we lived in Washington state, in the late 1950s. Furthermore, they had actually taken a day trip with friends to look at the old place, sometime after the book and the movie of the same name came out in the 1940s.

This familial connection, however faint, to an old, famous book and the movies it inspired, piqued my childish mind, and I eagerly started reading about life on a chicken ranch on the Olympic Penninsula. I fell in love with Betty's easy, friendly, hysterically funny, down-to-earth yet somehow elegant prose, and immediately checked out her other autobiographical books: The Plague and I, Anybody Can Do Anything, and Onions In The Stew.

In all of her autobiographical books save Onions In The Stew, Betty uses the first chapter to presage her theme by describing her experiences as a child in a large, boisterous family, in loving and extremely funny detail. In Anybody Can Do Anything, Betty describes life with her family and her two young daughters, Anne and Joan, in Seattle after she has left her husband and the egg ranch behind. The Depression is on, and Betty, now a single mother, struggles with her large and interesting clan to make ends meet, somehow finding a lot of laughs and funny adventures, often with her exuberant sister Mary, the inspiration for the book, along the way. Anyone who is interested in what life was like in Seattle in the 1930s, in witty character descriptions, and in a personal glimpse of how families coped with the "Great Depression", will find this book fascinating, not to mention frequently hilarious.

Betty, I miss you and the way you used to make me laugh out loud--I was sad when I finished reading Onions In The Stew for the first time and then realized it was the last autobiographical book you wrote: the tuberculosis finally caught up with you in 1958, when I was only four years old, still living in Washington, not far from your home on Vashon Island. I re-read your books many times as I grew up, even visited Vashon Island, and often wished I could have met you and your family. It's silly, but I've always felt a sense of loss at never having known you, because I am sure you must have been a marvelous friend. Your sense of humor had a profound effect on me, and inspired me in my earliest writing attempts. It's been many years since I've read your books, but I've never forgotten your irrepressible, bona-fide funniness. Wherever you are, thank you!

ANYBODY CAN DO ANYTHING
This sweet, magical book is one of my favorites. This is a memoir of life in the Depression in Seattle, Washington. It is one of a set of four books by Mrs MacDonald: THE EGG AND I, ANYBODY CAN DO ANYTHING, THE PLAGUE AND I, and ONIONS IN THE STEW.

Betty MacDonald's sister, Mary Bard, also wrote at least three books: THE DOCTOR WEARS THREE FACES, FORTY ODD and THE BEST YOU CAN BE (I am a little unsure of the last title). Mary Bard is one of the major characters in ANYBODY CAN DO ANYTHING, and is almost as delightful as Betty MacDonald herself.

I recommend all of Betty MacDonald's books.

Fantastic reasource for baking
Having grown up cooking with Betty Crocker I could not resist this book. This book has a wonderful and vast selection of good recipes. One thing I love about Betty Crocker is they kitchen test all recipes throughly. So you can feel comfortable about the recipes as they are written. I love to experiement, but like you, I hate feeling left in the dark when it comes to new recipes and their preparation. I would definately urge you to pick up this recipe if you want excellent baking recipes. They range from breads, sweets, cookies, cakes, and more. You will soon be cooking up all sorts of tasty treats for your loved ones.

Excellent For Experienced And Beginning Cooks
I have several cookbooks and enjoy the challenge of intricate gourmet recipes. But for everyday baking, I find myself turning to Betty Crocker's Best Baking more than any other cookbook on my shelves. These recipes are reliable and beautifully presented. Even for the experienced cook, the baking tips at the beginning of several of the chapters are extremely helpful. If I had to give up all but one of my cookbooks, this would be the one I would choose to keep.

Marketing for the Legal Nurse Consultant

Every LNC should have this book!!
Marketing for the Legal Nurse Consultant is the most valuable book in my library! The Joos' walk LNCs through the world of marketing with ease. I've been lucky enough to have met these fine people in person and attended their marketing seminars. Here again, this is a "must do" for the independent legal nurse consultant. My cards and brochures went through major overhauls with their help and my business has prospered! Thank you both, John and Betty, for all you do! I'm looking forward to purchasing your next edition.

Real Answers to your LNC marketing questions
All the accolades that have been written about the Joos' book are true! This little jewel of a book is one I know I will keep referring back to in the years to come. The marketing plan and suggestions are aimed specifically at legal nurses which makes everything in this book usable and practical. "Marketing for the LNC" is an invaluable source of information not only for nurses at the early stages of setting up a new consulting business but also for those that have been at it for awhile and are wanting to expand. Betty writes as one who has an understanding of the fears that most nurses experience who are marketing themselves for the first time. This is one of those "must have" books for "newbies" and seasoned LNC's. It explains what is needed to promote yourself and explains how to effectively do so in a professional manner without spending a small fortune. After reading this book, marketing started to feel like less of a necessary evil; although it's still not my favorite way to spend my non-billable hours....I now have a much clearer idea of the message I want to send to my prospective attorney-clients and I have the tools to help me get my message across.

A "must read" for the beginning LNC...
This book takes one of the most difficult parts of the LNC business and breaks it down into simple and concise steps. From the initial, terrifying (yet neccessary) phone calls, to keeping your clients long-term...this book is invaluable. It's an "easy read" and I find myself referring to it frequently as a resource because of all the helpful tips it contains. Great job Betty and John!

CAPTIVATING
This work is translated from the French, and even though in English it loses some of its lyrical power, it still remains a unique work with a unique voice. This is a story between a would-be-novelist and a girl he meets by chance. What works in the novel is the unpretentiousness of the narrator, whose prose reads almost like a stream of conciousness and yet manages to remain honest. It captures well the mind of 'a man' without censoring much of anything or compromising its literary integrity. It is emotionally charged, and the characters stay with you long after you've finished the book. I highly recommend this book since it is the only one of a dozen Philippe Djian's novels which has been translated.

best
i loved it. djian is a great writer. i write my own stories but after djian i decided to quit. he's done everything i want to do. u must read this... fabulous.

Betty Blue
This book rocks, Djians writeing is pure rythm'blues and his characters are beaming of live and spirit. a real must read for pretty much everybody (unless you are prude 8-)

I'm passing this on to my women friends
Someone gave me this when I was just starting out in my career, years ago. I donated this copy to the Women's collection in my employer's library, and reread my old, dog-eared copy. The advice and insights are just as fresh and relevant as they were years ago. This should be given to every young woman just entering corporate America - it would be good to add to ethics studies in both business and science (my field). I still make use of the advice and strategies. It would be nice to see an new edition come out ...

Tells you the rules of business very clearly...
... and if you weren't either a football player in high school or in the military you don't know them.

It's written for women, but any men that weren't jocks or military need to read this too.

I used to wonder why I got in trouble at work -- now I know and don't do it anymore. I'm getting well paid for my work, get along with my co-workers and management, and my career is on track.

I recommend this book to everyone I know, the few who actually read it get the same results I got.

It's a little dated, but don't let that stop you. The corporate culture (at least in the United States) hasn't changed much this century and it's not likely to change anytime soon. Some of the details she presents may be different, the general principles are still completely current.

Also, she's a fun writer and it's a good read.

Description of corporate world and advice on career planning
Interesting book which describes the corporate world from a women's perspective and gives advice on career planning and advancement. As a man, I find the book overstates the nature men and of `male' business - not all men are sports jocks. However, the book does contain plenty of good, ruthless, honest advice.

Great cookbook!
I've seen different Bisquick recipes in other magazines...but it is nice to have ALL the recipes in one easy to use book! Fantastic book - easy to follow directions and lots of great pictures. I've made several of the recipes for family and I am always told "this is a keeper."

everything you need in a cookbook
I was very impressed with this cookbook. Photo's are important to me to visualize what the finished recipe should look like. This book is full of photo's with practically every meal. Not just for desserts, this book has excellent one dish meals. They are easy to make and don't take a lot of time to prepare. Great for working mom's. I have tried several of the recipes in this book and they have all been "keepers". They are also good as leftovers the next day (that is if you have any left!)

Easy Reference for Bisquick Favorites
This book eliminated my constant searching through torn-off box tops and monthly recipe magazines to find Bisquick recipes. This is a comprehensive collection of Bisquick favorites, with easy-to-follow instructions, and photos of every recipe.

Good Coming Out Reference, But Formulate Your Own Strategy
I found this book to be a veritable Bible of Coming out. When the best time to do it is, how to establish a network of friends as a new "family", etc. But my one caveat for anyone dealing with their own sexuality would be to take all the advice you can stomach, and then formulate your own strategy for coming out. This book, while extremely valuable, is NOT a book of rules - merely suggestions. All of the books on this topic I have read seem to all have the same errored thought process - that just because you are gay, that you have to become an activist. It is important that you come to terms with your sexuality and share or don't share it with your loved ones and coworkers, but I think this book's approach of "coming out every day" may be quite intimidating for any person struggling to come out. You don't have to join GLAAD or march in any parades.

"The" book to have when coming out!
If you are pondering coming out, this is the book to have. I have just begun this process, and this book has changed my life profoundly. I cannot recommend it highly enough, it's like having a wise and reassuring friend who you can come back to again and again. I refer to it every day.

Gay? Read it. Straight? Give it!
When I began coming out, I ended up with two copies of this book--the first two people I came out to gave me copies of this book, and both were straight. If you are straight and someone gay comes out to you early on in their coming-out process and you want to show them that you support them--this is a great book to give. And if you are gay and want helpful, level-headed advice about how and when to come out--this is a great book to get before you begin. Some key things I hadn't realized in coming out that this book touches on, for instance, is that the order you come out to your straight friends matters. Who knew? It's chock full of little tidbits of things you probably never thought about--and viewpoints on things you probably have thought about. All in all, this should be the first title in your gay or lesbian library. I can't tell you how much it helped me.

This book is great!
This was a very useful and easy to understand grammar textbook for me when I took ESL classes in the USA. I have already recommended the book to two of my friends who are studying English on their own.

If you are poor at English grammar, this book is for you! There are lots of drills and exercises in every chapter, so you can practice writing sentences using the grammar learned and remember it.

My first grammar book
I am an educationist from Malaysia. I would like to share with you my experience in using this book.

My first ever contact with this book was when I was doing my English intensive preparatory course in the College of Preparatory Studies in Shah Alam Malaysia. The book was our grammar textbook for the whole six month we were there. It was given to us FOC by our sponsor, The Public Services Department. I felt that I really improved my knowledge on English grammar then. Thank you Azar for giving us this excellent book.

Now that I am an English, I am using this book as a textbook, too. I hope my students will gain a lot from it and improve their grammar as well.

An excellent Book, the Best I have ever found
Definitely, it's the best book I have ever read about English Grammar, as an English Teacher in Honduras, I found a very clear an easy way to explain one of the matters that usually are bothersome for students, Grammar. I strongy recommend this book for every person who really wants to learn English Grammar. Hector Reynaldo Acosta Espinal San Pedro Sula, Honduras, Central America roboplex@yahoo.com

A decent book, but it strays widely from its title
This book seem to focus far more on two other topics, NDEs (near death experiences) and saints, than it does on its title subject of angels. The whole angel theme seems in fact to be kind of an incidental inclusion, like a thread of only secondary importance. The tenuous angel theme thread ties the other two themes together, themes which form the actual substance of the book.
I would recommend this book to those interested in NDEs; I would also recommend this book to those who are interested in the mortification, stigmatic, and pain aspects of Catholicism, which are dwelled on quite extensively in this book. I'd also recommend this book to anyone interested in saints. But to someone purely interested in angels, I regret I have to advise you to look elsewhere for real substance on that subject.

Definitely a keeper.
This book is more than I ever expected; the honest, investigative research style of Pierre will turn any "skeptic" into a believer in the existence of angels. His bibliography and "permissions list" were also worth the price of the book; they opened up a new world for me. I sincerely hope he will write another book. Thanks to Amazon for making these 5 star books available used.

A wonderful book, a classic.
This book is written with humor, eloquence, journalistic perspective/restraint, and passion. After an inexplicable escape from what might have been a fatal shooting on the L.A. freeway, Mr. Jovanovic began on a journey to investigate whether angels do in fact exist. He approaches it with the experience and restraint of a professional journalist, which he is. He looks at Near Death Experiences (the famous tunnel with light at the end etc.), interviews the woman who made famous the 'stages of dying', and Georgette Faniel, a stigmatist who some believe is a living saint; the book explores such diverse topics as Medjugorje, Padre Pio, apparitions of angels and The Virgin Mary; and yet never gets syrupy or precious. In fact, it manages to be all the more powerful reading due to its step back from the topics. Friends gave me a copy of this book and I was amazed by it; it's very quiet in tone, yet not without humor, and explains itself very well. The reader goes on the journey to discover whether angels exist, right along with the author, yet at the end you don't feel pushed toward any conclusion but your own. I highly recommend this book to everyone, not just those who already believe in such things as these. (Oh ! PS, if you net-search on this book title you will find its author's own website, which has more about the book, including a the first chapter available to read online for free).

An excellent resource; the best way to learn ASL from a book
This is an excellent resource for those who wish to use real-life ASL as spoken by the American Deaf Community. Unlike other books on the topic, The American Sign Language Phrase Book avoids "Signed English" (the use of ASL as a word-for-word analog to spoken English). The book presents the grammar of ASL, showing sentence structure, phrasing, even slang, and noting when spoken English words are inappropriate. This is the only book I've seen that could really facilitate a friendly conversation between a hearing and deaf person. The down side? The illustrations are hard to get used to. Because The American Sign Language Phrase Book (properly) emphasizes facial expression, there is often not enough detail given in illustrating the hands. My ASL teacher recommends this book to the exclusion of any other ASL dictionary

The best ASL grammar guide for the average student
Having studied ASL for 14 years, and owning nearly all the available texts on the subject, I find The American Sign Language Phrase Book the best source to begin internalizing the grammar of ASL.

Don't learn grammar - absorb it!
This book is a perfect way to learn ASL grammar. I've been studying ASL for a year, and most books I've found either ignore grammar and basically use English word order, or else try to explain the grammar in a rule-based way.

Learning a foreign language like French or Japanese is full of complicated grammar. Lou Fant proves that there's another way. You can really get the hang of ASL grammar without memorizing compicated rules and doing dull exercises.

By showing good examples, and explaining the principles rather than the rules, you just absorb the topic-comment structure of ASL grammar by observing. This book makes it easy.
