Fundamentals of English Grammar

good designs
This is a richly illustrated, panorama of contemporary English furniture makers and their designs. Several pages of color photos are devoted to each artesian. If there is a focus it is on lamination and the blending of several materials with wood, such as metals and glass. The quality of the illustrations could allow one to faithfully adopt proportions and curves to ones own designs. I look foreward to similar books dealing with other cultures and countries.

Great for beginners and has a variety of rules.
After learning Mah Jong playing computer versions and on-line, I wanted to play with freinds. Most Mah Jong sets you buy do not come with a good instruction manual. This book will let you learn how to set the tiles, play the hand and keep score. It tells you how to keep the game to a simple level or make it very complex. It explains the various styles of play and shows special hands. The novice will enjoy the how-to and the illustrations. The intermediate player will like the explaination of different styles and scoring. The professional will most likely find the book light and not very useful. If you are starting out playing Mah Jong, this book is a great way to learn the game quickly. I would probably add more background on the special hands and strategy. Otherwise, I really enjoyed the book and highly recommend it.

1-2-3 Easy Steps to Understanding Gardening
I found this book to be exceptionally useful as a novice gardener with very little knowlegde on the care and propogation of houseplants. It gives step-by-step intructions on how to care for a variety of plants from the frist day you bring it home - everything from the type of soil it likes, how and what to fertilize with and the environment it should be kept in. Also useful are the tips on how to propogate various types of plants from flowers to vegetable to vines. It gave me to confidence to start new baby plantlings from the very plants I already have in my home. I highly recommend this book for anyone who just wants one definitve "bible" on how to garden. It is a complete reference manual that no one should be without.

Thank goodness this great book has been updated again!
This book is a very valuable resource for public librarians acting as a reader's adviser ("I like this author, who/what else would I like?"), but I can't imagine anyone having the time to be poring over the pages as a collection development tool.
Genreflecting is also a great reference for writing or literature studies students who are studying genre - along with lists of authors that they can pursue, there are very lucid discussions of the genres, and it's a good starting point for assignments in this area. (I used it for this purpose at Uni, and liked it so much that I tried to buy a copy - unfortunately it was between editions at the time.)

The indispensable first-hand account of Korczak's last days.
Janusz Korczak was a radical educator and early advocate of the rights of children. He was a Polish Jew (Korczak was a gentile pseudonym for Henryk Goldschmidt) and pediatrician whose work was well-known in Europe before WWII. Though little translated in English, his exceptionally original and poetic style and ideas puts him in the same league as Pestalozzi, Dewey and Montessori. In prewar Warsaw he organized two outstanding institutions: orphanages which were run as self-governing children's republics. But Korczak is legendary not for his life of intense work and ideas, but for his death. When The Warsaw Ghetto was liquidated, he prepared his 200 children to defy death in a unique way. Eye-witness accounts testify to the shattering spectacle of 200 cheerful, orderly children marching in foursomes through the hell of the Ghetto singing. They entered the trains singing, and they died at Treblinka. Every teacher and Korczak himself died with them. Korczak was twice of! fered by the Nazis to survive, once at the trains, once in Treblinka itself -- to be sent to Germany and educate German youth. But he refused. The Ghetto Diary is the only English translation of Korczak's own account of the last year in the Ghetto. It is invaluable. Those of us interested in children, in education and in Remembrance, should put this book into Samizdat, copying it and sharing it. It is the duty of the publisher to keep such a document available. This edition has a superb introduction by a former student of Korczak's. It is written as a novella, but perhaps comes as close to capturing the state of Korczak's mind in those days as anything could. It is quite surrealistic -- as is Korczak's own work. It combines in tribute to Korczak, Korczak's own unique synthesis of imagination, dream and the harshest, most unsparingly observed reality.

One of my favorite books!
Betty Cavanna's A Girl Can Dream is one of my favorite books. It is about Loretta Larkin, a high school senior, who wins a writing contest and gets a chance to learn to be a pilot. She was inspired to fly by her brother Tony, who was a pilot in World War II. Not only does Rette learn to fly a plane, she learns that people, such as popular Elise Wynn and Jeff Chandler, are not always as different from her as they seem. The book was written in the 1940s, so some might call it "outdated", but the book deserves a chance since it has an entertaining and engaging storyline.
