I plan to order more for elder friends and family
Simple and easy to understand exercises, progressing from very easy to moderately easy. Good for the frail elderly to the moderately fit or at-risk senior. Simple drawings demonstrate the activities. Large print is easy on elder eyes. As an occupational therapist, I recommend this as a gift to share with a dear elder.

How To Prevent Falls
As an clinical administrator for residential services for an older population, I have seen first hand the devastating effects of the fear of falling on older people. Betty Perkins-Carpenter has provided a direct, easy-to-use approach to improving balance for seniors. How To Prevent Falls offers a life of continued independence and dignity for people for whom both are easily lost. It can provide the basis for activities of daily living program for seniors centers, and residential facilities. Kriegie 7956: A World War II Bombardier's Pursuit of Freedom

Kriegie No Bomb!
Kriegie 7956 captures more than Vernon Gatewood as a POW in a German Prisoner of War Camp. It captures the reader and hooks him in a matter of minutes. Well written and easily read, this book can not be put down. Small in size, it is big in theme and conflict. The true story of Vernon Gatewood, a Marietta, Ohio native, and his "adventures" in training to be a bombadier, his actual flights, and in his incarceration in Nazi prisoner of war camps after his bomber crashed, makes for compelling reading. Mr. Gatewood and his daughter-in-law, Betty, have taken a historical time period that many junior high students know nothing about and have given them an exciting read that doesn't weigh them down with a lot of technical terms, but instead gives them the true feelings of a man who went through hell and back to return to his family. Filled with pictures from that time period, the book takes no more than a couple of hours of intense reading, but is well worth the price and the effort expended. If you want your child or students to learn about WWII from a different perspective, then Kriegie 7956 by Betty and Vernon Gatewood is,hands down, the best little book in town!

Unique!
An excellent account of a student's discovery of her grandfather's experiences in WWII as a member of a bomber crew, and the trying tale of his survival as a POW in Nazi prison camps.
Extremely well written from a novel perspective, that of a student working on a history project.
A sleeper, everyone should get this book!

Perhaps Biased Brother
Let me start my review of "KRIEGIE 7956" by thanking my sister, Betty Jean Belkham Gatewood, for my copy. Betty and Vernon were nice enough to sign one and send it to me hot off the press. I loved every bit of it. Of course it was nice to be mentioned a couple of times too, thank you both.

If I may, I'd like to say a few words to each of the authors and to Betsy:

Betty Jean,

Thank you for helping Vernon to tell his story to Betsy and at the same time helping him get the story put down in a form that we can all enjoy. I hope to see more of your work in the future

I'm very proud of you. You have managed to capture the essence of Vernon's story and record it in such a way that the reader feels like they are there. At the same time you wrapped the story of Betsy's education around it. What a great format.

I know you wrote this with a couple of different audiences in mind, and honey I think you managed it very well. I hope the kids enjoy reading it, and learn as much from it, as I did. I'm sure they will.

Your bro,
Ernie

Vernon,

Thank you so much for the recounting your war remembrances for Betsy and to us, the readers. It must still be very difficult for you to recall the pain and difficulties you endured during your time as a kriegie and we all thank you for working with Betty Jean to record and publish your "Pursuit of Freedom" for Betsy and future generations.

Regards,
Ernie

Betsy,

I think you were the real winner/hero here. You learned a great history lesson from your grandfather Vernon and you were able to help your mother pass it on to others in such an entertaining way. Thank you for sharing your story with us.

Much love to you,
Your Uncle Ernie

The Last Thing You Get to Know
Published in Paperback by Swan Scythe Press (29 September, 2000)
Author: Betty Davis Miller
Amazon base price: $9.95

Gentle insight
Betty Miller's poems resonate with the insights and experiences of a well-lived, well-considered life. Her poetry is a condensation of philosophy, observation and music. The irony in the title is that in reading these poems the reader is convinced that so long as Betty Miller draws a breath, these insights are not the last things she will know.

The Last Thing You Get to Know
These poems are the best I have ever read. Without pretense or artifice Miller lays bare the incredible richness of life in all its complexity: from birth to ageing, from loving to losing. Her poems shimmer with beauty and insight as she explores the power of grief, the transcendence of love, our search for the eternal and the constancy of change. I was moved to tears more than once by these poems which describe the human experience with humour and passion. Miller's poetry leaves an indelible impression with words and images that one wants to return to over and over. If you only buy one book of poetry this year, this should be the one.

Brilliant
very perceptive -- definitely worth reading.

Compelling reading
Betty Kovacs starts "The Miracle of Death" with a short quote that sums up the book nicely - "For life is eternal and love is immortal and death is only a horizon, and an horizon is nothing save the limit of our sight". Death is not an ending of life but a part of the cycle of life. Just as the horizon is not the end of the earth, neither is death the end of life. Through a series of precognitive dreams and visions her husband, son, and herself learned about this cycle of life. When her son Pisti died she came to understand that birth and death are just events in time and space.

Betty Kovacs shares her pathway to that understanding as well as the knowledge itself in a gentle and understanding manner like a wise elder relating truth to a seeker of knowledge. Throughout the book she compassionately relates her grief and her pathway to a deeper understanding of life and death. This is a highly recommended read for anyone seeking answers to the questions of loss of a loved one.

Unique Perspectives
When I first sat down with Betty Kovacs's MIRACLE OF DEATH, I wasn't thrilled to read it. First, it wasn't a book by one of my author friends and secondly I wasn't sure about the topic. Then I read the first page, and couldn't put it down.

Dr. Kovacs weaves emotion into the pages that will leave you gripping the book, refusing to put it down. I finished it in one sitting and was left with some new insights into life, death and the relationships between the two.

I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for something deeper to read.

THE MIRACLE OF DEATH by Betty J. Kovacs, Ph.D.
THE MIRACLE OF DEATH by Betty J. Kovacs, Ph.D., Foreword by Anne Baring. Kamlak Center, Claremont, CA 91711-4716. 2003. appendices, notes, resources, bibliography, index.

Betty Kovacs uses her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature and Theory of Symbolic Language from the University of California at Irvine and position as member of the Board of Directors of the Jung Society of Claremont, CA, to understand the mystery and the tragedy of the death of her son Pisti. Kovacs' husband Istvan shared in the journey to a profound understanding of this momentous event in their lives. "The Miracle of Death" has much broader appeal than its apparent New-Age topic. It will draw as well readers interested in grieving and grief studies, women's memoirs, family studies, and psychological and spiritual journeys and quests. Kovacs cites historical and mythological studies, individual experiences surrounding death, and cutting-edge science to support a radical change in the way we think about death and life.

In the course of her revelations, Kovacs came to realize that her formal education and professional activity had imposed limitations on her understanding. She felt her customary ways of thinking and comprehending breaking down under the impact of her son's untimely death. Moving beyond her past experiences and learning, she became open to experiences and aspects of reality she had been blind to. A short passage of Christopher Fry quoted by Kovacs summarizes her journey and what she learned--"...there is an angle of experience where the dark is distilled into light...." Kovacs found that angle. In so openly, honestly, and sensitively relating her experience in assimilating the meaning of her son's death, Kovacs can also open the reader's life to ordinarily buried dimensions of existence and experience.

Anne Bunch has made me a Muse!
Frankly, I hate to cook. But reading Anne's reflections on the joy and love involved, has helped me think of it in a more positive way. The rave reviews I get for the outcome help too! The food is healthy, beautiful, delicious and easy to make.

Now if I could just look as good as the babe on the front of the book!

A Muse Came to Dinner is the best !!!!!!!!!!
I have tried many of the recipes and I was amazed how simple they were and how delicious. They are also unique and great for dinner parties.
The book contains some cooking philosophy written by the chef and were an inspiration to me. I have a hard time with cooking in general but this book really helped me to enjoy the whole love of cooking which the author really portrays in her writing.
I especially liked the soup & salad recipes. For example the Fiesta salad is so colorful. I made it for a baby shower that I had for a friend of mine and I have never had so many compliments on the beauty & taste of my food like I had with that.
I recommend it to anyone & everyone who wants to be truely inspired with the love of cooking. Aside from the art work being wonderfully enjoyable !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I use this book almost every day !!!!!!!!

Healthy does not mean Yuckie!
The absolute best thing about this book is how much my kids LOVE everything in it. The kids shutter if I so much as whisper the "T" word (tofu). The Moondance or Kung Pao Tofu salads have become family favorites, opening a new door to our eating habits. The desserts are to die for(I can't even pick a favorite) and they are so easy to put together. The soups are fantastic, and once you try the enchiladas, you'll know what to make for your next party. In a word, the food in this book is "GOOOOOOD"!!

You've got to read this book!
Each chapter is a complete story in itself, taking the reader on a new adventure with the elf Nasturtium. The author has a rich imagination presenting stories that are clever, amusing and told with a gentle hand. The illustrations are marvelous. My children (8 & 11 years) and I have read the stories over and over again. This book will certainly set the record straight on the Valentine Castle, the Tooth Fairy, the Weed Fairy and where snowflakes come from.

I loved it!
The book was very creatively and cleverly written. The author shows a true love and understanding of children. Each story takes the children (and adults) on exciting adventures, often to faraway lands.

A delightful afternoon of reading
This book will delight adults as well as children. There are many "life lessons" to be learned and the beautiful illustrations bring the book alive with each new story. The author allows us to escape into a land of make believe, while instilling us with compassion for others.

Excellent book for families dealing with the issues of gay c
I bought this book when I was thinking of coming out to my parents. Although they never read it, I did. I learned more about the issues of being gay and how to deal with them by reading this book than from any other source. It helped me to understand my parents' fear and anxiety, and helped me to accept myself in a very positive way that has lasted a lifetime.

I highly recommend this book to anyone, gay or straight, who desires to learn the facts about homosexuality, and how real people can deal with its unique problems in a positive way.

Excellent book for gay men and women and their families.
I did a search for this title specifically so I could submit a review. That's how good I think it is. I read a previous release of this book when I was "outed" to my family accidentally in 1980. The book described to me the feelings of some parents, the possibility of rejection, but especially the love and acceptance that can be experienced by gays when they reveal their whole selves. This book can bring comfort to family members who are dealing with coming-out issues. I thank and applaud the authors whole-heartedly!

Heartwarming, Inspiring, Informative, Encompassing!

I didn't know a book on this subject could be as enlightening, inspiring, and informative all at the same time. Truly insightful in delivering and uncovering of the "Homosexual" dilemna of children who at some point in their lives have decided to face the consequences of telling their parents who they really are.

This book focuses on uncovering the heartaches, fear, rejection, love of parents and at the same time confusion and self-doubt faced by most parents of homosexual children. This book provides personal glimpses and sheds some light on parent's fears that they are somehow responsible for who their children have become regarding their sexuality and focuses more on accepting and loving their child for the whole person that they have become instead of hating them or rejecting them for that one aspect of their life.

Gift from God!!!
Had to write my first care plan/case study. I have no idea what I would have done without this book. Making a nursing diagnosis and care planning for a student nurse can be a complex process. This book just brings it all together. It includes not only the nursing diagnosis, but rationales for nursing interventions and outcomes. Other students in the class have purchased other Care Plan books, however, most of the have been asking to look at mine. Two of them have already ordered their own. I will continue to recommend this book to everyone .

Wow
BEST nursing diagnosis out there! I will never buy another nursing diagnosis book unless it has the Ackley name on it. All of us SWEAR by it. It makes writing the ADPIE's easy and there are pages and pages of interventions. Much better then the pocket sized book and VERY worth the money.

Best value for the money
Of the five or so diagnosis handbooks that I have purchased, this one is the one that I reference the most when doing care plans and research - the least expensive too. For the money, this is the most helpful book that you will find.

Germanium: A New Approach to Immunity

A new way for chelation therapy.
More than 10 years ago my mother-in-law sought an alternative treatment called chelation. Its purpose was to use derivatives of metals to clear her arteries of the plaque that had built up in them. Now, I find another use for chelated germanium. It combats viruses, is used in the treatment of AIDS patients, can prevent some cancers as well as diminish the ravages of late-stage cancer. Originally researched/developed in Japan, Kamen gives credence to that early researcher's claims. Since it is the only book available and if you're seeking nutritional supplements to battle one of the above problems, it is worth buying.

Germanium fights viruses and wins.
Germanium can also be found on the market as Ge-132. As Kamen says in
her book this trace mineral can boost immune function, help to fight
viral infections, and ward off allergies and fever blisters (herpers).
It is in the family of anti-oxidants in what it does....

5 stars for being the only one in print
I find it incredible that this book has been in print for over 10 years and people have been having success with germanium as an alternative/preventative to prescribed medicines (search the internet if you doubt my claims) yet no one else has found it worth writing about. Hmmmm...That must be because Kamen's book does the best job at explaining this compound and how it works in our bodies and why it is such an important supplement in these toxic times. [...]

Like a Promise Embraces Second Chances
The more I read, the more LIKE A PROMISE hooked me. What a great reflection on the challenge of returning home. As more history was revealed in each chapter, I became mesmerized by the relationships and action. We carry our childhood all our lives, but can move past our self-imposed limits as adults.

How ironic that you named the town Weehope, when Bethy ultimately found so much hope and joy there. The story reminds people to take risks and embrace second chances.
