The Games Were Coming
Published in Paperback by Heinemann (June, 1977)
Author: Michael Anthony

Average review score:

"Games" is thoroughly entertaining, caribbean style
Michael Anthony portrays the island life he knows so well with consummate ease, and draws the reader into the excitement of his characters' lives. Even now I can envision the climactic race, and feel the heat of the Caribbean sun-- Anthony's imagery remains vivid and strong long after you've turned the last page. One does not have to be a cyclist or even a sports enthusiast to get into this story, because it transcends those boundaries. This is a wonderful book for teens, and for the young at heart -- it's a great way to reminisce.

amazingly insightful and complexly throught-provoking...
an undeniably comprehensive understanding of what it is to be male, female, heterosexual, homosexual, peasant, dubliner, etc., in contemporary ireland, placed in historical, political, economic, and academic contexts as appropriate, this collection of essays grants the reader insight into the most engaging aspects of gender and sexuality in a country where they have historically been marginalized by an overriding theme of nationalism and religion. only in recent years have studies of gender and sexuality reached the irish, as a result of many factors, perhaps most noticably the entry into the EC and the influence of modern media that followed, and this book provides an absolutely comprehensive encapsulation of the different views and interpretations of literary forms that these studies have taken on in recent years.

GREAT BOOK of GAMES
This is a great compilation of worthwhile games. As a youth minister, I have had the need to find creative, fun games for my groups. Some make a point, and some are fun. The index is helpful, and the games are a quick read. If you need a reference book for game ideas, I highly recommend this one.

A great introduction to Arthurian related authors
A superb introduction to the Arthurian Mysteries, the Holy Grail, Early Christianity in Britain, Terrestrial Alignment (Leys), the Somerset Zodiac and Sacred Proportional Architecture!

I think the book provides a good starting point for those keen to learn more about the above subjects but feel it's all too complex and vast an area (which it is but that's why we love it!). A good way to decide on which area to concentrate your study efforts.

Also provides a good introduction to the better known writers in these fields. Don't worry, they will start to become more familiar as you read their other books.

This book 'chose me' in 1992 and after reading it I decided to move to the UK from New Zealand and thus began a 2 year field study (in between working) of the Arthurian and related subjects.

This book has proved to be a useful point of reference and has travelled with me while roaming around Somerset in my backpack between my Ordnance Survey maps and my lunch!

A great mix of writing styles and subjects.

read this book 7 times in elementary school!
Open your imagination and get swept into the adventure. A brother and sister find a golden pinecone in the woods which enables them to communicate with animals and fairies. Their dog Ooshka becomes their guide as they must return the magical pinecone to the valley of Tekontha. Many adventures come their way. Flavoured with native indian folklore. The author lived in British Columbia and the setting is 1950's west coast Canada. More appropriate for children grade 3+ as some of their adventures may be scary for younger children (i.e. the "Lake Snake Swamp"). Paperback has beautiful new illustrations. Has a "Harry Potter" feel to it. Loved it so much I named my web site after it!

The best short essay work I have seen on this subject
In line with much of the new non-fiction surveys and studies, the book, in short essays gives the picture on much information that I have not seen before on the Gold Rush and the aftermath. In particular it gives a reader a chance to compare the Internet investment frenzy with the Gold Mine stocks frenzy in the 1860s & 70s.

The information is concise and beautifully and fascinatingly written.
