First Amanda Pepper Book
This was the first Amanda Pepper book that I read and I have to admit I am not anxious to read another. The mystery plot was well written and had some surprises. This wasn't a page turner, sit and the edge of your seat suspense novel. It was ok for a mellow summer read.

An excellent amateur sleuth tale

Philadelphia English teacher Amanda Pepper worries about the strange change in behavior of one of her brightest students, Adam Evans. In recent days, Adam seems filled with fear and rage, ready to strike out at anyone. Assistant librarian Heidi Fisher provides Amanda's class with a tour of the public library. Not long after, she is found dead, strangled to death. Adam, who was on the tour, is missing.

The police believe Adam is on the run after committing the murder. Even Amanda's significant other, police officer MacKenzie thinks the lad is guilty. Only Amanda believes her student is innocent. She thinks he saw the killing and is on the lam from the murderer. All Amanda needs to do is find the teenager before he becomes victim number two.

With the recent violence in Colorado, ADAM AND EVIL has a sad timeliness that takes away from its dark humor and wit. However, what cannot be ignored is that the amateur sleuthing remains first rate and the problems in modern school systems are handled with dexterity. Amanda is one of the better characters in fiction today and author Gillian Roberts keeps the Philly scene fresh even though it is her ninth Pepper tale. There will be o questions questions of why Ms. Roberts is an Anthony Award winner after the reading of this superb detective story.

Amanda Pepper for Teacher of the Year!
School's in! Just in time for a hot summer evening comes Gillian Roberts' newest Amanda Pepper novel. This young, thirty-something English teacher is every parent's dream--caring and involved despite a self-serving administration that worries more about image than education. In ADAM AND EVIL, Amanda faces twin dilemmas in both her professional and private lives when a troubled student is accused of murder and her live-in love, a homicide detective, seems willfully obtuse on both fronts. Gillian Roberts is a stylish, witty writer whose compassion shines on every page. I've read all her books and she just keeps getting better. Five gold stars and a big A+!

Very Informative
This book was very informative on ways to work on portraying oneself as being a outgoing, energetic, and charismatic person. I have read many books on Charisma and this is a very good book to start with. It looks at each aspect of Charisma separately, gives you a quiz to take to rate yourself on that aspect, and then goes about explaining how to become more magnetic in each of those aspects. If you're looking for ways to become more outgoing and charismatic then this would be a good book to start with.

Succinct guidelines and lively writing = an energizing book.
The book's approach to this illusive phenomenon is built around what the author sees as the seven main components of charisma: body language, ability to speak well, active listening, persuasiveness, use of space and time, understanding and relating to others, and vision or ideas. Succinct guidelines, quizzes and lively writing make this a highly energizing and useful book.

All the Secrets-in one book!
Over the years, I have read countless books and articles, listened to tapes, and watched videos to learn the secrets to success. I've sat through seminars, workshops, speeches, and classes hoping to pick up one more little gem of an idea to improve my effectiveness.

In Charisma, Tony Alessandra has pulled all of that knowledge together in one place. After many years in business, and a whole lot of learning about how to be successful in sales, management, and life, I recognized quite a bit of the contents of this volume. I really enjoyed the refresher and reinforcement . . . and I picked up some new advice that I'd missed along the way.

The book starts, appropriately with an introduction to Charisma: "the ability to positively influence others by connecting with them physically, emotionally, and intellectually." From the introductory chapters, Alessandra takes us on a journey through seven fully-loaded chapters spilling over with the secrets of how to fashion and hone that influencing ability.

To enable you to see the framework of this tool kit, I'll list the chapters. Sending Out Your Best Silent Message, Speaking with Authority, Listening Attentively, Becoming More Persuasive, Using Space and Time to Your Advantage, Maximizing Your Adaptability, and Expanding Your Vision and Ideas. As a reader, you'll find yourself asking your author-mentor how he learned all this stuff! Wow! Your respect and admiration will grow, followed by appreciation as you put the many principles to work and start seeing results.

This book should be required reading for every salesperson, every high school senior, every young person starting out on a career. People who have been around for a while, but who have not yet achieved the success they desire, will also benefit greatly from this guidebook. The continual flow of advice and wisdom is interrupted by a self-test in every chapter. You'll be able to see yourself grow page by page.

Hint to make this a better world: Parents, buy this book for your kids.

PS: Alessandra is also author of The Platinum Rule. Read that one next!

Tony Robbins Made The Difference!
Anybody who claims Tony Robbins's teachings contradict Christianity, or are only a temporary "high" are wrong. Tony's concepts changed my life, because I had the desire to do so. He showed my how to apply my desire to change and channel that energy. People who claim it didn't work for them, did not utilize the techniques fully, because they truely didn't want to change. Like physical excerise, mental exercise requires time, patients and a lot of work. Going to the gym once will not make you buff and trim, and reading a Tony Robbins' book once will not do the same for your mind. You have to apply the information over and over to get results. As for the contradiction to Christianity, well, I don't understand that claim. Tony's philososphies are rooted in the power of a supreme being wanting us to be happy and helping us. I am a strong Christian, and the instructions I recieved from Tony only helped me to serve my fellow man better.

Tony is very motivating & inspiring.
My intro to Tony Robbins was through his first book, "Unlimited Power" and the audio tape of the same title. At the time I was like a miniture version of Tony, newly divorced, broke and alone. Unlimited Power got me started and gave incredible results in a short time. Since then I have been a avid Tony Robbins student and also subscribe to the popular "PowerTalk" series. My financial life was also a disaster and through one of Tony's "Powertalk" tapes, I was introduced to Charles Givens. As per Tony's advice on the tape I went out and bought Givens book WEALTHWITHOUT RISK (Now More Wealth Without Risk) Givens book did as much for my financial life as Tony's book's and tapes have done for me on a personal development level. Thank you Tony for some great material and truly incredible results.

This is the most empowering book I've ever read.
"Awaken the Giant Within" by Anthony Robbins is most definitely the book that I would strongly recommend to all people. Rating it on a one to ten scale, it will receive a perfect score of ten. This is a great book of self-empowerment written by a man who has been through it all, from rags to riches, from loneliness to abundance. Anthony Robbins has done a great deal of research to finding the key to great success and happiness physically and mentally. All the formulas that he suggest in the book includes well-done researched backup statements. His book is like a bible on how to live life to it's fullest. Although I have not finish reading this book, I have already developed great confident in the researched ideas it contains. Robbins is able to illustrate even the most complex ideas and break them down into more understandable phrases. The situations he speaks of in this book can relate to practically anyone in this society whether you are rich or poor, happy or not. Even people who live in different worlds can relate to this very one book. If you came across a certain topic that does not apply to you, you can go on and skip the chapter, but even if a topic does not apply, it is still interesting to read. After reading a portion or just chapters of this number one seller, you most likely will feel more refreshed than when you picked up the book. So each time you put the book down after some time of knowledgable reading, a great sense of self-empowerment will fill your mind. **** It's a FOUR STAR rating!!!....Amy Leung

Makes you wonder about Hollywood and if Flo Anthony based this on a true story! Get this for yourself and give it as a Christmad gift to everyone you know.

This book is da bomb!
I was really digging this book for real. I loved the plot and the storyline. I have never really read a murder mystery before and I loved it. Everyone should check this out cause you won't be able to put it down for real.

This book is full of Hollywood folks and is real animated. I just adored this book. Get it for yourself and then tell a friend!!!!!

Blindsided by the Gossip Diva
Recently I read "Keeping Secrets, Telling Lies", the Hollywood murder mystery novel by Gossip Diva Flo Anthony and Vincent Copeland. The well developed characters and intricate plot made it difficult to put the book down so I finished it in one sitting. Eagerly turning each page to see what happens next in this surprising, twisting look at an almost perfect crime. The outcome will surprise you.

After the Glitter Fades
This was THE book that was supposed to take the lid off the secret SUPREMES. While it delivers in the sense that it offers
up some juicy bits of backstage gossip, it sheds no new light on
the rise and eventual fall of the legendary girl group. The
first two thirds of the book gather momentum at breakneck speed
only to stall in the last chapters. The famous third act curse.
Berry Gordy was the brains. Diana Ross did what she was told.
Mary Wilson partied and boyfriended her way around the world.Flo
Ballard whined and drank.Curtain.The end. What's missing is the
"final" final chapter on Florence Ballard. Briefly addressed in
the book, Flo Ballard did NOT die broke. She agreed to a "secret"
settlement with "someone" and was well on her way to her former
lifestyle. If Mr. Turner was the fixture in her life he'd have us
believe, he should have REALLY delved into that. Where was he then? Someone should write a book about the real egomaniac who
caused all the trouble. It wasn't Ross. How about a REAL Mary Wilson book?

Who couldn't love Flo
How exciting it must have been to have known Florence Ballard the way Tony did. His experiences with Flo, Mary, and the other one were incredibly great reading. I have been a Supremes fan forever it seems, and this has to be the most insightful book I have read about them yet. The way that Flo handled herself at such a young age may have been misguided, but she stood up for herself, and not at the expense of others. Throughout the book I felt that Tony showed what life at Motown was really like, and if you weren't willing to play the game, you got burned. A must read for any Supremes fan, especially those with a warm spot for Florence.

A True Dreamgirl***
Tony, I read the book.Once I started Isimply "could not put it down". This story is truly amazing because you can actually travel into time and feel the emotions that three young women felt. Well as for Flo, what a wonderful, giftedtalented and stong young woman. It was such a shame that she never had the chance to explode as the "One and True Diva". I can only imagine that she was the "silent one" to Diana, if only we could listen to them trading the leads. Do not get it wrong, they are both different and very talented, your ears really posess the truth with this. Everyone knows that this was not "a fair game," with many motown artist thanks to Mr.Berry Gordy and the crew. It is true, that if something is standing in a persons way from gaining the success desired for themselves, theylearn easily and efficiently of how to discourage, threaten, steal and destroyones life. If I had the money at this moment, this would be a film in the making. It wouldn't be bashing any of the girls, only to bring Flo up front for this once. So please, make this into a film for us. Thank you for a wonderful story told about your relationships with Flo and The Supremes!!

Grotesque-triste
Justine is a gallery of desperate characters, lost in the labyrinth of the self. Incapable of helping themselves or each other, they wound one another or allow themselves to be wounded, instead. In the character of Justine is the intensification of the novel, its bruised and bloody heart. The lines between cruelty and weakness blur and dissolve in her person, and we quickly learn that everyone is a victim of their own temperament, and that no one is to blame.

Justine is a book full of awful music and terrible poetry, of helpless posession and excorcism,of bitter truths & life-sustaining illusions. A pained and painful meditation on Love and, ultimately, Life.

For all of Mr. Durrell's masterfully crafted and stirring descriptions of Alexandria, the city soon falls off (like so much dead skin) and, there emerges the Human Face - grimacing.

Incandescent, word-drunk novel
Durrell has created a city out of language in this novel. I take that partially back--in _Justine_, the city IS language. His lush and tactile descriptions become as real as bricks and mortar in the reader's mind. The Alexandria of this novel hums, crackles, simmers...sometimes it devours the characters who choose to live there, sometimes it gives them moments of epiphany. But reading this novel, you will, yourself, become a kind of resident of this unreal city. You will follow with fondness and sadness the minor characters who give this novel so much texture. You will soak up the cadences of Durrell's prose in creating this city. Justine, Nessim, and the rest of the flawed, though achingly poignant characters will haunt your reading of this novel in one fashion or another. They will seem to you like people you have known in real life--who HASN'T had a topsy-turvy lover in their lives?-- but at the same time take on properties of something out of Greek theatre. The characters are realistic and yet are greater than the sum of their parts. I can't wait to read the next three novels in the Alexandria Quartet. This book will truly endure. It has set off firecrackers in my brain.

haunting, beautiful, and thought provoking
The descriptions of place, in colors and lights, make me want to paint the beauty. The symbolism and literary devices are like plums to pick from a tree. Lush and rich.

Although the plot of the story stages around Justine and Darley's love, the ideas put forth are always bringing questions to my mind. For example, I have asked myself repeatedly, what qualities in a human cause them to be so loved by so many? It does not necessarily seem to be strength of character, loyalty, or beauty that entrances and seduces. What is it in Justine that is so enticing?

The book is stimulating and entertaining, but not on a level based on plot.

This ought to be required reading.

A translation of Schwaller de Lubicz, but not a light read
When I returned from my first trip to Egypt in May, 1998, I voraciously read everything I could get my hands on. Before I read Serpent in the Sky, I had viewed John's emmy-award-winning documentary, so I was prepared for excellence in thinking and new ideas about ancient Egypt. Although John West writes with great flair and articulation, his summarizing of Schwaller de Lubicz was tough going. West makes some good points of his own, but some of de Lubicz's theories are too esoteric for me. West acknowledges he's not a mathemetician and much of de Lubicz's theories are based on sacred geometry, and was beyond my scope as well. I found that the quotations on the sides of the pages detracted from the main body of work. It's very apparent that West thoroughly loves ancient Egypt and has devoted many years to study, discussion and leading tours there. I had the good fortune to be with him on a second tour to Egypt in Nov, 1998. I enjoyed the foreword by Robert Masters regarding Sekhmet, as I had some extraordinary experiences with Sekhmet myself both while I was in Egypt and when I returned. All in all, I would recommend reading Serpent in the Sky. John still leads tours to Egypt.

a foundation for the new Egyptology and the Fourth Way
First, please understand that this work is of an exponentially higher order than the gee-whiz historical sleuthing of Graham Hancock, Colin Wilson and the rest. This is not to detract from such authors, but West is coming from a higher perspective. If you want insight into the deeper meanings of the ancient monuments and myths in Egypt, a subject whose surface is hardly scratched by the Hancock and Wilson type of writer, you MUST acquaint yourself with the ideas of the esotericist of genius, R. A. Schwaller de Lubicz. That is the subject matter of this book. Likewise, if you are interested in the ideas of G. I. Gurdjieff or P. D. Ouspensky and are looking to expand on their themes, look no further. Even though they were unaware of one another's work, Schwaller and Gurdjieff are amazingly similar, the difference being that Schwaller is the greater intellect. And if you aren't interested in any of this stuff, buy this book and find out why you should be.

An Interpretation of Ancient Egypt that Finally makes Sense
John Anthony West has done the world an enormous service with this bold, brilliance, beautifully written and thoroughly engaging book. He extends the work of Alsation philospher and mathematician, R.A, Schwaller de Lubicz, making it not only comprehensible to the lay reader, but the only plausible explanation for the grandeur and magnificance of ancient Egyptian culture. West is anything but a New Age flake, and he takes some fairly tough-minded positions on the absurdities of modern scholarship. Yet he has the advantage over most orthodox Egyptologists in that he can (a) write -- and write superbly -- and (b) he has a sense of humor, which makes even his most vitriolic attacks on those who persist in ascribing the monuments of Egypt to a race of egomaniacal barbarians the work of a rational giant in a world of Lilliputians. His grasp of the entire sweep of Egyptian history is extraordinary, and his ability to render even the most complex accounts of Pythagorean geometry or symbolism in the hieroglyphs is something every would be academic should take notes on. Besides all this, the book is magnificently illustrated on every page. Without any question, this is one of the best books I have ever read

Gottlieb Clears Up Muddied, & Muddled, Waters
Anthony Gottlieb is an 'amateur' philosopher in the best sense of the word: a person who engages in an activity, pursuit, study, or science for pleasure rather than for financial benefit, as an avocation rather than as a profession. Gottlieb, author of THE DREAM OF REASON, is the executive editor of THE ECONOMIST. He studied philosophy at Cambridge University and University College, London, and has been a Visiting Professor at Harvard University. He writes regularly on philosophy for the NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW. Writing with zestful wit and wisdom, the author of this marvelous history of Western philosophy caused me to chuckle and laugh out loud at his humorous insights into the bizarre behavior and believes of many philosophers. I suspected that this book would be different when I read in the Introduction, 'Any subject [philosophy] that is responsible for producing [Martin] Heidegger owes the world an apology.' The book, howver is not amateurish in the sense of being unskilled, inept, or incompetent. Gottlieb has an amazing grasp not only of philosophy and philosophers but also of modern science. He brings clarity to muddled, and muddled, waters. He opens the windows of a musty room and lets in fresh air. THE DREAM OF REASON has three main divisions: (1) The Pre-Socratics; (2) Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle; and (3) From Aristotle to the Renaissance (with emphasis on the Epicureans, the Stoics, and the Skeptics). Gottlieb makes short shrift of the Middle Ages, giving a thousand years less than 100 pages. He writes provocatively: 'Philosophy in the West remained more or less the slave of Christianity for about a millennium. From the perspective of modern thought, it is tempting to see that lengthy interlude in terms of the tale of Sleeping Beauty. Having pricked its finger on Christian theology, philosophy fell asleep for about a thousand years until awakened by the kiss of Descartes.' Gottlieb promises a second volume: From Rene Descartes ('the father of modern philosophy' to the present time. I eagerly await its publication. THE DREAM OF REASON is Exhibit #1 in evidence that a philosophical work need not be dour, dry, and dull, but instead can be a delightful reading experience. I recommend this book highly.

Also recommended: FREUD: DARKNESS IN THE MIDST OF VISION, by Louis Breger.

Great Education and Very Readable
I cannot imagine studying philosophy. It seems to be such a complex subject that any meaningful study would require intense interest and devotion. Well, not everyone has that ability. For us lazy folk, this book is a great asset. Actually, that designation degrades the quality of this book. While it is true that this book is a great read for anyone, it also offers an extremely intelligent look at the 2,600 history of Western thought from the early Greeks to the Renaissance. The amount of knowledge that I took in from this book is really impressive, just an amazing amount of important education within 440 pages. What makes this brilliant little book even better is the skill and wit of its writer, Anthony Gottlieb. The Dream of Reason is far from a dry, slow tome of historical abstract thinking, it is a very entertaining and readable story of history.

People living in the present always take for granted the world around them. Natural processes are so passé now that hardly anyone thinks about how objects break down atomically, or what makes the Sun burn. We feel we have such control over the world that knowledge of it is really meaningless. 2,600 years ago, the world around man was almost totally unknown to humans. The environment was unpredictable and could often bring about devastating destruction. The stars and the planets defied any explanation that ancient man had to offer. To end this mystery, educated men developed extremely different theories in order to explain simple things, such as what the Earth was made up of or how life began. The development of thinking is so interesting to watch, as people devoid of modern instruments struggled to grasp the mysteries of the natural world. All of these men are written of with great reverence and honesty. Many who are thought to be great pioneers in scientist are taken down a peg by Gottlieb?s extensive research. Others benefit from Gottlieb?s fair and educational descriptions.

The historical process gets even more interesting as thinkers, somewhat tired of the distant enigmas of the Earth, began to concentrate on the state of man. This included many different fields, including religion, politics, and medical science. It quickly became clear to me that no matter how strange the Earth seems, man himself is probably the greatest mystery historical philosophers have had to tackle. Gottlieb methodically describes the development of these ideas, taking the right amount of time to explain extremely complex problems in plain understandable English. I found Gottlieb?s look at Plato?s Republic to be one of the most interesting chapters I have ever read.

This book is perfect for newcomers or serious students of philosophies. An informative and fun read.

Highly readable survey of philosophy
In the "Dream of Reason," Gottlieb tells the story of philosophy from its origins through the Renaissance in a warm, entertaining and cogent way. This book is a wonderful read. I have always wanted to understand the broad sweep of philosophy, but have found the books that try to provide this information to dense and unreadable. I have to admit I never made it through Bertrand Russell's famous "History of Western Philosophy."

Finally, there is book that is both entertaining and informative. In Gottlieb's book I never felt like I was "getting stuck" in minutiae. Clearly, the challenge for Gottlieb was deciding what to leave out, and while I am by no means an expert, from the areas I do know well I found his focus fair and informative. This book is a treat.

Deep insight on the inner workings of relationships.
Using the Transactional Analysis theory first introduced by Dr. Eric Berne, Dr. Thomas A. Harris has published the results of his pioneering work in this best selling book. This is probably one of the best books that explains how to use this theory in improving all kinds of personal relationships.

Dr. Harris starts off by going into the history of Transactional Analysis and the theories of those before Dr. Eric Berne. The second chapter explains the basic of Transactional Analysis which is the concept of the Parent, Adult, and Child ego states that are supposed to compose each and every one of our personalities. The Parent ego state contains all the information we accept as true that we have gathered from authority figures including our parents. The Adult ego state is the collection of all information that we have proven to ourselves as being true (using some sort of logic). The Child ego state is our natural good and bad side of feelings - love, anger, greed, empathy, etc. The author extensively uses the phrase P-A-C (Parent-Adult-Child) through the rest of the book.

Dr. Harris then introduces the concept of the four different life positions that each of us adopts at any given time. All of us apparently go through four life positions ending up with the last one in a sequential manner except some of us get stuck in the earlier stages (this results in problems that typically need therapy). These four positions are -

1. I'm Not OK, You're OK
2. I'm Not OK, You're Not OK
3. I'm OK, You're Not OK
4. I'm OK, You're OK

The next few chapters of the book focus on the fact that we can change no matter what stage we are stuck in and the theory behind how to change. The chapters after that focus on a few specific types of relationships - with spouses, children and adoloscents. There is then a chapter discussing when treatment is necessary and the book wraps up with a couple of chapters on P-A-C with regards to moral values and social implications of P-A-C. These last two chapters are more subjective and probably the author's personal views at that time. I have typically tried to take the information in these two chapters with a grain of salt.

Overall, this is an excellent book on using Transactional Analysis in improving your relationships with the most important people of your life. I found this book easier to read than 'Born to Win' or some of the original works by Dr. Eric Berne. This seems to be a common sentiment among those who have read and like books on Transactional Analysis. More than most self-help books out there, this book promises to lead to the most amount of positive changes. This is probably due to the systematic approach that is followed through out the book and the fact that it is very easy to follow and implement at almost any age.

Enjoy this life altering book!

A self-help book that actually helps!
I was put off by the title of this book until someone I respected a great deal recommended it. The first chapter is a little hard to wade through as the general principles are explained, but after wading through that I found myself exclaiming "Yes! Exactly!" as I read through. It gave me a great deal of food for thought as I recognised aspects of my own personality and the people around me. Because the basic principles were simple yet effective, the book's message has stayed with me, helping me communicate more effectively with family, friends and workmates.

The truth about how our minds work
I read this book when I was eleven years old, and somehow, I was just old enough to understand it. While Freud uses smoke and mirror terms like "id", "ego" and "super ego", Harris uses simple terms like "child", "adult" and "parent", meaning roughly the same thing but being more accessible. He starts the book off with a chapter on experiments that were performed, involving electrical stimulation to certain areas of exposed brains during surgery. These experiments yielded some of the first and most important discoveries ever made into how our minds work. Then he uses the findings to explain the rest. This is good stuff, beautifully done. Having read this book almost thirty years ago, I can promise you, you'll never forget this one.
