Susan B. Anthony: One of the Mothers of Womens Suffrage
The Treasury Department announced that it was stopping production of the latest dollar coin, the little thick gold one with Sacagawea on it, which reminds some of us of the previous dollar coin, the not quite round Susan B. Anthony dollar that debuted in 1979. I always thought there was an important similarity between Anthony's fight for women's rights and the failed dollar that bore her image: both were good ideas whose time has not yet come. You would think that the practicality of the silver dollar would be clear every time people try to smooth out a paper dollar to use in a vending machine; one pound coins work just great in Britain. But the American people are stubborn about the status quo, which Anthony discovered throughout her life as she fought for equality, not just between the sexes but in terms of races as well. This juvenile biography by Lucile Davis tells young readers about how Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton worked together for 51 years trying to achieve their goal. In 1872 Anthony was arrested by trying to vote, but it was not until 1920, fourteen years after Anthony's death, that the 19th Amendment was finally adopted providing for woman suffrage. However, because of her life long effort it was still Anthony's name that was associated with that amendment. Young readers are confronted with a life devoted to an important struggle for over half a century that does not succeed until after the subject of the biography has died, which I would consider an atypical but worthwhile example of a life well led. Davis covers all of the key details from Anthony's life and the back of the book includes some choice quotes by Anthony, a list of important dates in her life, a glossary, short bibliography, useful addresses and internet sites, and an index. Other similar titles in the Photo-Illustrated Biographies series are devoted to Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott and Amelia Bloomer.

Excellent practical guide to death scenes
Edited by 2 respected practicing forensic pathologists, this is the first text to concentrate on the investigation of scenes of suspicious deaths. Over the course of 182 pages, the authors take the reader through the general principles of death scene examination, as well as introducing the reader to the roles of the pathologist, the forensic medical examiner, and various forensic scientists at the scene. Of particular interest was the Chapter on the role of the forensic entomologist, with a fascinating overview of the role of insect evidence at a death scene. The second part of the book reviews the salient points of the most common death scenes encountered - those involving firearms, fires and explosions, children, asphyxia and a catch-all chapter including deaths due to falls and knife wounds etc. These chapters offer the student a well needed overview of the most important factors to consider at these death scenes, and I think that the guidance given by the authors would be well received by trainee pathologists and forensic medical examiners as well. The practical value of the examples given is immense, and keeps the reader interested, as they can relate the theoretical aspects of the text with actual cases encountered by the authors. A minor criticism of this approach, which held tru for the earlier editions of Prof. Keith Simpson's textbook (now edited by Prof. Bernard Knight, and totally overhauled in terms of style) is that the illustrative cases are interesting, and one only gets a snippet of them, rather than a more in depth review of their facts and findings. One of the things that kept me interested in studying law was the continual reference to decided cases, and the presentation of the facts of those cases, along with commentary from the deciding judges etc, which put the facts of the case into perspective. I would therefore have liked to have seen more made of the practical examples given, with a more in depth consideration of the facts of those cases and more of an interpretation of those facts. Watching a respected pathologist unpick the facts of a case from photographs taken at a death scene and post-mortem is fascinating, and I would have thought that the authors of this text would be able to provide the reader with examples of their forensic abilities in more grandiose style than is allowed for in this text. In order to illustrate the theoretical principles of death scene investigation, for a variety of suspicious death types, many black and white photographs are presented throughout. A general criticism that I have of many forensic textbooks, is that there is an over reliance on black and white prints. In order to fully appreciate the details of the scene, particularly those involving bloodstains, I would have thought that the use of colour prints would have been preferable. However, the issue is presumably one of cost, and at £50, any additional cost could well put this book out of the price range of most students. The use of line drawings in this book (due to the insistence of the police involved in a few of the cases chosen by the authors for this text) is again understandable in the circumstances, but detracts from the quality of the illustrations. Was it really necessary to retain those cases, or couldn't the authors have just chosen a few more instead, (where good quality prints were available) ? In their preface, the authors cite their main aim as 'to try to focus the reader's mind on the guiding principles of scene investigation, and to appreciate fully the teamwork approach that is essential for a successful outcome'. In my opinion they have succeeded in this aim admirably, and I have no doubt that this would be an essential text to those studying to be forensic pathologists or forensic medical examiners. I would also recommend it to those studying forensic science at undergraduate of postgraduate levels, and believe that the cover price is well worth it, despite the disapointing photographic illustrations.

A clear introduction to a complex subject
Sustainable development is a vast and complex subject where a new entrant can easily get lost. This concise book first offers a review of the issues involved, principally the problematiques centred around natural resources such as land, water, and biodiversity. It then tries to integrate these problematiques into a systems model whereby the non-expert policy maker can obtain a clearer picture of the stakes involved in a development intervention. The model presented, called "sustainability assessment map (SAM)", enables visualisation of the impacts of an intervention. This cannot by itself be an aid to decision making since it lacks the quantitative aspect, but I find this simple trick very interesting for illuminating the problem and for guiding discussions during preparation of an a priori assessment plan for a development intervention. I find both the introductory material and the model of representation very interesting from pedagogic point of view.

Really a great book!
It is a great book to have for learning the principals of interventional radiology. I have read since I started my fellowship last year. Dyet's Textbook of endovascular procedures is a complete solution to getting up to most daily interventions, and also including recent procedures, like carotid angioplasty and stenting and uterine fibroids embolization.

Excellent source for writing innovations for word chunks.
I would recommend this book to all elementary school teachers. The pictures are a little less colorful, but the content is excellent. We ended up writing there's an end in Brenda and other books. Kitchen-no end in sink, no end in stove, but there's an end in blender. Fast Food Place- No end in Happy Meal at McDonalds, no end in the ice cream sundae at Dairy queen, but there's an end in Chicken Tenders at Burger king, etc. etc.

A Thousand Years of the Hungarian Art of War

Fascinating, if a bit defensive.
This interesting work is a military history of the Hungarian people. Beginning in ninth century with the Magyar arrival in Eastern Europe, Professor Komjathy traces Hungarian wars and war-making, focusing heavily on such highpoints as the Mongol Invasion of 1241, Janos Hunyadi's activities in the fifteenth century, and the Hungarian bids for independence in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The book then ends with an in-depth examination of Hungary's involvement in World War II.

Overall I found this to be a fascinating book. It is written with a passion and clarity that draws the reader in. I do, though, have two things against this book. First, for some inexplicable reason, the Napoleonic wars are complete ignored in this work, something that I find hard to understand. Secondly, this book in not unbiased, but is intended to provide heroes for "second and third generation ethnic Hungarians who live in the free world." As such, the author's spirited defenses of Hungarian military defeats sometimes come off sounding rather defensive and touchy.

Overall, though, in spite of the criticism above, I did enjoy this book, and highly recommend it to anyone interested in Hungarian or military history. Indeed, I truly enjoyed reading a history book that covered historical events from a vantage point that I have not seen used in any other book. I do wish that Professor Komjathy would update this fascinating book, as so much has happened in Hungary since 1982!

A worthy addition to the Cluster series.
Set in the Universe of the Cluster series it gives the viewer a glimpse of Galactic Society when its not facing a dire crisis. It has a great competition with lots of twists and action but it also contains a love story as does almost all Anthony fiction. I found it highly enjoyable.
