A real gem!
This book turned out to be so much more than I had hoped, containing information on all aspects of the Shadow. The book begins with Gibson's excellently written history of his writing of the shadow stories, has a list of Shadow novels, shows Shadow covers (many in color!), discusses the Shadow's agents, shows illustrations, and then has a never before published Shadow story: The Riddle of the Rangoon Ruby! Then the book covers the Shadow radio show, includes a list of all broadcasts, and has the scripts of two broadcasts (The Death House Rescue-1937, and the White Legion-1938). Then the Shadow movies are covered, and the Shadow comics; including a whole comic adventure entitled the Mystery of the Sealed Box. Finally there are notes on codes used by the Shadow, and various old-time Shadow merchandise.

See? Everything you could want! This is book is a real gem, and must have for any Shadow fan. I enjoyed Gibson's story of writing the Shadow beyond anything I could have imagined, and absolutely loved the Rangoon Ruby. I sincerely hope that they someday reissue this book.

A superbly accomplished addition to any cookbook collection
Carolyn Wente (a winery president) and Kimball Jones (an executive chef) successfully collaborate in Sharing The Vineyard Table: A Celebration Of Wine And Food From The Wente Vineyards Restaurant to share stories and secrets of vineyard living -- and showcase more than one hundred delicious recipes, enhanced with color photography, wine notes, and sidebar commentaries. From Mascarpone Cheesecake with Biscotti Crust and Balsamic Strawberries; Smoked Trout on Potato Chips with Lemon, Fennel, and Dill; and Watercress Soup; to Wild Mushroom Flatbread with Prosciutto, Arugula, and Truffle Oil; Calzone with Artichokes, Westphalian Ham, Ricotta, and Parmesan; and Corn and Smoked Chicken Chowder with Jalapeno-Cilantro Butter, Sharing The Vineyard Table offers dishes in harmony with the seasons. Each recipes, from appetizers to desserts, is accompanied by simple and concise wine notes suggesting the type of wine that will best complement the dish (and why!). A superbly accomplished addition to any cookbook collection Sharing The Vineyard Table is enriched for the family chef or casual gourmet browser with are sidebars of Wente and Jones' personal refections on the farming life of the vineyard, cooking tips, a detailed index, entries for 36 wine varietals followed by a list of all the recipes suggested for pairing, and a list of mail-order resources.

A Divine Partnership. . .
Carolyn Wente and Kimball Jones have created a masterful book for people who truly love to cook for family and friends. This cookbook sets the new standard for those of us who have cooked for many years, have collected (and divested themselves of) hundreds of cookbooks and who want a sophisticated, yet easy to prepare, palette of seasonal menus. The wine and food pairings are exceptional, the balance of flavors heaven-sent, the cooking instructions are intelligent and conversational -- they really understand the home kitchen. My "audience" has raved and I have a new enthusiasm for cooking that I thought I'd lost. This book is a necessity, not a luxury. A comfort just to read. Thank you, Wente Vineyards.

A perfect marriage of wine and food
The perfect book for those who love good food and wine. This book is a wonderful blend of exquisite receipes and wine pairings. It is a joint effort of Carolyn Wente of Wente Winery in Livermore, Ca, and Executive chef extraordinare, Kimball Jones. Each contributes thoughts about the pairings of wine and food and there are receipes from both authors. The receipes are reasonable and anyone with even moderate skill should be able to produce wonderful meals. The real joy of this book is that the receipes are arranged by season to take advantage of the best availble produce in the area(added bonus, usually found in abundance and at reasonable prices!), in the finest French tradition. This is a sensual cookbook, both visually and in the wealth of food and wine knowledge that allow even the casual cook to prepare and serve gourmet quality food. An absolute must for anyone who loves good food!

Statistics (MEI Structured Mathematics)

Authors: Anthony Eccles, Alan Graham, and Roger Porkess

Average review score:

A perfect introductory book that takes nothing for granted.
Teach Yourself Statistics is a very useful book for the beginner. It explains everything about introductory statistics, including the math involved. Its teachings are presented in an easy-to-understand format with a minimum of unfamiliar terms. I managed to get through the book in a single day, and I applied its information the next day at my job--with a full understanding of what I had learned. Very good book!

Great book for the mathematically challenged (ME!)
I have to learn this stuff for Grad. school. I HATE math. This assumes you know nothing about math and teaches you what you need to know to do Stats. Even helps pick out a calculator. Great book for the $.

A great little book.
This book focuses on the key ideas and principles of statistics and uses a minimum of jargon and formulas. Clear and concise. Contained everthing that I wanted to know, yet was small enough to take with me and read on the bus.

A Must-have
Yes, this book is a must have. It is also (a reprint of) perhaps the most important publication of Wright's early career. But it certainly has not been virtually ignored. It has been praised by many, including rival architects, and reprinted numerous times before this.

An anthology of genius
Wright printed this book in Germany to show the European architecture world what the future of architecture could be. Though virtually ignored in both Europe and the United States, this collection of both built and unbuilt plans and drawings gives a through insight and understanding of the architect's genius.

Accurate reproduction of the 1910 Wasmuth Portfolio
This book is the only complete and accurate reproduction of Wright's 1910 treatise "Ausgefurte Bauten und Entwurfe von Frank LLoyd Wright" (the Wasmuth Portfolio.) Although it is reduced in size, all plates are listed by their original roman numerals with the German text. It is the only useful refernece when researching the wasmuth portfolio. Neither the Dover edition nor the Horizon Press edition reproduced the plates without renumbering them in some fashion. This book is a must for any dealer or collector interested in acquiring the Wasmuth Portfolio.

The symbol stones of Scotland : a social anthropological resolution of the problem of the Picts

Questions Answered - Questions asked
It has been said (by me) "Without a doubt the best book on Pictish studies since Wainwright's "The Problem of the Picts" and just like that book, a great controversial entry to the field!"

What Jackson does rather well is to deliver a brilliant and complicated theory on the marriage system of Pictish society, which according to him was governed by a complicated set of rules based on the number seven. He also delivers a clear new interpretration of Sueno's stone and the overall message in the carved stones of Scotland's original people.

Pictish studies have been characterized (due to lack of actual evidence) by a lot of guesses and educated postulations - it all depends if you are in the Celtic camp or not - were they Celts? or were they a non Celtic people? The Picts were around till the 9th century and yet we know less about them than people who have disappeared for thousands of years. more research is needed.

Still tops after all these years
Many of the issues raised here are still unanswered.... only DNA will deliver the true answer... this 1950's book is still provocative and excellent!

Brilliant and provovative!
Without a doubt the best book on Pictish studies since Wainwright's "The Problem of the Picts" and just like that book, a great controversial entry to the field!

Tarot

Wonderous view of society, philosophy, and religion
With a main character who delves into every subject imaginable from racial relations to indepth looks at several major religions, this book is enough to make you stop and evaluate how much of your own life is represented in here. It was a beautiful view of a seeker trying to find the truth, and discoverin how much of his own past is related to the truths, and histories, that he is finding. It is also closely related with another series of Anthony's, with a crossover in fact for the fifth book in the Cluster Cycle, "Viscious Circle." For those who enjoy finding their place in the universe, this book is a must.

The meaning of life is.....................
Originally published as a trilogy, Tarot provides a original slant on world religions. Students of religion or sociology would benefit from reading this book because it shows how people of different belief systems must work together to survive. An amazing amount of detail is present in describing the many religions discussed (I was particularly impressed with how in-depth the Mormon faith was described. Wow!) This book is most definitely a keeper, to be read and re-read many times over. Even if you can only find a used copy, get it! It is not for anyone with a narrow mind, however, since everything from religion to sex is discussed by the characters. It is one of Anthony's better works, rating even above his Incarnations of Immortality series -- good, earthy, thought-provoking science fiction.

So that's what religion is!
Peirs Anthony's twisted way of dealing with reality yet again reaches an all time high. This time although he questions the perception of religion. For all of you out there who are bible thumping maniacs to heathens this is the book for you. Some of the content in the book is disturbing if you are not prepared but the message given is well worth hearing. Truly one of Anthony's best works. Be prepared to take some time to read it. It's worth it if you are not easily offended. It will open the eyes and expand the mind of all who read it. If you have ever taken a philosophy class and did not like the way it effected your life I suggest you steer clear of this baby, but on the otherhand if your looking for explanations and want the truth this novel is not to be missed!

This is too good to be missed!
Without having any expectations, I bought this book and was pleasantly surprised that I finished it in two sittings. The most engaging part of the book was how the reader shadowed Gareth in his adventure. It was like being a passenger in the same car: experiencing what he did on a moment-to-moment basis. The reader was transported to different corners of the city at a good pace, and then sadly, it was over. Here's hoping that there will be a sequel!

A Very Satisfying Read
Author Britto need not fear a malpractice suit for his writing skills. This is a well written mystery which enlightens the reader on a number of fronts, including the pursuit and collecting of art pottery. Britto's writing skill is such that he imbeds the information in the reader's mind, creating a desire to learn more about art pottery independently. Maybe author Britto is really a transplant surgeon, not a plastic surgeon! Let's hear more from this author, and soon

Edgar quality stuff
A really excellent first novel. You can taste the food, smell the smells and see the people because the descriptions are so good. The feelings are a little hidden, but this is, after all, a mystery. The editing could have been a little tighter to smooth out some of the slightly stilted language in parts. When is the last time you got up in the middle of the night to read more because of that blue car following the protagonists little girl? This writer is a physician and I would like to know if the book is understandable for non-physicians

Tchaikovsky, a Biography
Published in Hardcover by Random House Value Publishing (November, 1998)
Author: Anthony Holden
Amazon base price: $9.99
Average review score:

Highly successful bio
A bold look at a difficult man. Tchaikovsky, terrified that his sexuality would become a topic of scandal, split his powerful sexual response between (a) male members of his family on whom he showered very intense affection and (b) young men, sometimes young boys, who were often rough-trade prostitutes. Anthony Holden offers a succinct, persuasive, well-written portrait. Although short on analysis of Tchaikovsky's music (the man was a genius at representing emotion), Holden is especially good at examining the composer's emotional relationships and the causes of his death: did he die of cholera or arsenic? by infection or suicide? If you like biographies of musicians, you'll love this one.

Biography That Reads Like a Thriller
Many kudos to Mr. Holden for this spectacular effort! This is what biography is to be! A careful reconstruction of a life, with logical extrapolation of missing points and a compelling analysis of historical inconsistencies in this unique figure. I especially appreciated the author's relative absence from the narrative (i.e., he was not telling us constantly how he felt about the facts of the biography). Gratefully, he did not editorialize about the biographies central issue: Tchaikovsky's homosexuality. The issue too often derails serious historical research, either to condemn or to convert to the cause. A sheer delight of a read.

fascinating study of a sex-crazed genius
Select virtually any adjective that comes to mind and it most likely will be applicable to this "too bizarre to be true" picture of a male homosexual nymphomaniac (my term). One of the supreme musical geniuses of Western music tormented by "irresistible" urges to copulate with 14-year old boys taken off the streets of Florence, Rome, etc., etc. His highly emotional music surely mirrors his inner torment.

Short and Sweet on Strategy
If your golf mechanics are ready to use on the golf course, then it's time to think about how to lower your score. Tom Watson is one of the best strategists in the game of professional golf. Read this book to discover how he picks clubs and where to hit them in various circumstances, how he hits repeatably shaped shots (straight, high and low fades, high and low draws, skyballs and worm-burning knockdowns), and how to get the advantage in matchplay. The goal is to lower the golf score, not to hit the world's most pure drive. And this is a good thing.

Highly recommended.

Hands On Golf Book to Play Better
Step by step, this book is like a playing lesson. From the green backwards, Watson helps us realize what course maintenance is all about. This book will really help us begin to think a round out, rather than just look at the yardage, the obstacles and let it rip. Smart golf book. Higly recommended.

excellent golf strategy bible
even a beginning golfer can reap benefits from this important publication. mr. watson is in touch with how to transfer knowledge to another golfer. this volume is so important to have if you are at all serious about the game. this book serves a wide variety of players from hackers wondering where they might get back strokes to single digit players seeking a new perspective. this is one must book for a golfers library.

Great Resource for Study Group
What a great resource for a study group on this issue. I used this book as a source for presenting Biblical guidance on gambling and the lottery. The material was very straight-forward and easy to understand. The Bible is very clear on the issue and Dr. Evans brought what the Bible has to say to us on this in a way that any layperson could understand. There should be no question as to what our Father expects from us after reading this book and following up with the Biblical references that were cited in the book.

The Truth has finally been told about the Lottery!
If you do not what to know the truth about Gambling and the Lottery then this book isn't for you! Dr. Evans has done an excellent job in presenting what the Word of God says concerning this issue and where we as beleivers are to stand also. In all of Tony Evans writtings he deals with the truth only, not personal feelings or opinions. Bless Your Spirit

Wonderful
I was amazed at the wonderful insight that Dr. Evans gives in this in depth study of the lottery and gambling. I am so thankful that somebody finally had the guts to step up to the plate and deal with this issue on a biblical base. Many times preachers refuse to deal with issues so controversial because of the reaction that they anticipate from the crowd. Thank you Dr. Evans for your biblical stance and your wonderful teaching.
