A New Perspective on Modernism
Modernism in architecture is so closely identified with a handful of hero figures (like Walter Gropius and Mies van der Rohe) that we often forget that the real story behind its development is a complex and contentious one. In this wonderful and much-needed book, Anthony Alofsin deftly illustrates that the arrival of European architects in the U.S. in the 1930s cast a shadow over emerging progressive trends in American architectural design and education. At Harvard in particular, this led to an amnesia that convinced students and professors alike that it was Gropius who brought modern ideas to the Graduate School of Design when he began teaching there in 1937. "The Struggle for Modernism" shows clearly, though, that the kernels of these modern ideas were present in the Harvard design programs from their beginnings in 1900. It was not from the Bauhaus that Harvard developed its interdisciplinary approach to design that insisted on collaboration amongst architects, landscape architects, and city planners. Instead, it was Americans like Herbert Langford Warren, Frederick Law Olmsted, Jr., George Harold Edgell, and, most importantly, Joseph Hudnut who over decades created the influential and rigorous design programs. This is a fascinating and most welcome book that sheds much new light on a subject that many have incorrectly assumed was already well-understood. Highly recommended.

Good, basic submarine book.
If you're looking for a thorough design history, try Norman Friedman's book. If you want nice photos and drawings of all the major boats from before WW I to present this is your book. It's easy to read, has enough detail for all but the techno-geeks like me and is reasonably priced. There are a few missed details and errors, but by-and-large it's great. Nice effort.

One mistey morning, the Irish lost their freadom
Step by step the planned revolution unfolds. The Irish, preparing pikes, organizing, and plotting betrayal against themselves.

Treachery and battle. Summer soldiers is a sometines exausting account of the failed rebellion against the Ascendancy.

This really is a minute to minute account of what happened.

That is this books best quality. It's so detailed it's hard to really accept. But the footnotes are there, and they reveal not only a failed rebellion (that is still relevant to the IRA and the RUC) but the details of how mass planning under duress comes together....and falls apart.

Essential for any student of Irish HIstory. Essential for anyone who needs to understand the rebelious masses. Essential to anyone interested in contemporary Irish politics.

This was the event that created todays nightmare in Ireland.

One of the best books on conservation in Amazonia !
If you want to read only one book on conservation in Amazonia, I would recommend this one. The author has a long experience in this field and is chairman of the international advisory group (IAG) consulting the "Pilot Program" of the G-7 states to save the rain forests in Amazonia. Hall's concept of "productive conservation" takes participation of the local population very seriously. Even if you know that the people living in the forest should be seen as part of the solution, you can still learn a lot from reading this book. Several projects of "productive conservation" are presented in detail: Rubber tappers, agroforestry and the Mamiraua fishery project. According to Hall, public awareness (in Amazonia) of conservation issues is about to reach critical mass. This book is of great help to reach that goal.

Excellent if you travel by train.
I bought this book month before going to Switzerland. I read a little and decide to buy Swiss Pass Ticket and travel by train. It was great idea. The boks has a lot information about little towns which are on train route, historical facts and interesting stories. You can just travel by train and read info about almost every town or city you passing by. I think all Switzerland railway routes are desribed. Public and private railways.

I spent beautiful holidays using this travel guide, planned everything and get a lot interesting information about Switzerland.
I recommend it to everyone who wants to know everything about Switzerland and its Railways.

Want to build a table? Buy this book!
This book contains lots of information about building tables. There are several detailed plans, and not of just one style either. There are Shaker, Arts & Crafts and more styles. Small end tables, dining tables, ovals and glass topped tables.

As with most information from Taunton, it is very thorough. At the begining of the book is a section on the different ways to connect a table top to the base, and when you would want to use each.

Different methods are discribed in making the tables, and as usual for Taunton, there is a lot of hand tool usage.
