Good for int/adv, great materials explination, inpirational
The is a wonderful book for intermediate to advanced pen and ink artists looking for a thorough explanation of materials and a great discussion of the methodology of creating fantastic pen and ink artwork. It is packed with a wide variety of examples that are sure to inspire you.

The book starts out with a large (almost 50 pages) and excellent overview of materials and tools. I love it that the author takes the time to discuss numerous brands of pens, inks and papers instead of just generalizing them.

The following section focuses on ink drawing techniques. There is a good discussion of gray tones, parallel lines, value changes, hatching, cross-hatching and patterns. Then there are a few demonstrations of brush techniques such as laying a wash and using white on toned paper. Mixed media demos mixing wax crayons and acrylic with ink are also here as well as scratchboard and practice exercises.

The basic elements of drawing follow, including things like texture, shape, volume, color, rhythm and scale. Next, drawing strategies are covered. There are no projects or any step-by-step techniques per se. Rather, the author shows you examples of his artwork with advice on his approach, concepts and techniques. I recommend this book for those with some pen & ink drawing experience seeking ideas, tips and inspiration. There is a good list of suppliers in the back.

Smith's surreal images and mastery of a variety of styles make this a book to enjoy for the artwork it contains as well as the instruction it provides.

pen and ink for the elite
Most art technique books are either entirely for the sunday painter or they are so elitist, you need to be a phd to understand them. This book works on different levels so everyone can enjoy it. The sections cover materials and drawing techniques. My one qualm is some rather lame examples of art. A little too conzervative for my tastes. This is ART, not woolworths!

Borges' anthology of his work
Jorge Luis Borges was born in Buenos Aires in 1899. His parents, multilingual intellectuals, would soon travel to Europe with their children in the hopes of finding medical treatment for the progressive (inherited) failing eyesight that Borges' father was experiencing. Borges was a brainy, precocious, nearsighted and bookish child who was deeply attached to his sister Norah, with whom he played nearly exclusively and happily, mainly in the protected indoors of the family's library, or in the garden, and at the Buenos Aires Zoo, where Borges adored tigers most of all. (Stroking the fur of a living tiger was a lifelong dream and one that he finally attained - in old age).

Borges wrote his first short story at age six and, amazingly, at the age of nine translated Oscar Wilde's short story "The Happy Prince" from English to Spanish, publishing the story in a local newspaper. It was simply assumed that his father (also "Jorge Borges") had done the translation. Borges was educated in the classics, was multilingual, and was eventually named Director of the National Library of Argentina. The irony of being blind - and also in direct control of "800,000 volumes" did not escape him.

This book was assembled by Borges himself, in the 1960s. It's an assortment of short stories, essays, fictions and nonfictions, and poems. It is a demanding and rewarding read. Like most of his work, his human subjects here are mainly males- of history, myth, and his own invention. Women are not much included in his oevre. I add that so that readers new to Borges are informed, in advance.

He does not court the reader so much as respect readerly intelligence. As such his work sometimes initially intimidates students - and later, thrills. It stays with you, permanently.

Borges was a master of several forms, and they are here. Most of his areas of interest are 'big' themes : art, poetry, mortality, loyalty, destiny, ancient and world history. (He even wrote articles about books or other articles that, in fact, did not exist - other than for his express purposes.) In his poetry and other pieces, notions of eternity versus mortality (for example: one's knowing that one will never again open a certain beloved book, travel a familiar street, or know or see a still-living loved one) is approached with profound humility and grace. There are meditations on a variety of men and topics, among them Shakespeare, 'the Aleph,' and Shih Huang Ti, the Chinese emperor who ordered that the Wall of China be built, and "likewise ordered all books antedating him to be burned."

Borges loves details, material culture, and even minutiae, too. There is much to hang on to in these pieces. It's a deliberate and purposeful sampling of some of his work - not a "best of," since one volume of 200 pages can't really do that. His writing demands full engagement. Many of his stories lack characters of romance, drama, or overt emotionality - but have great power nonetheless.

Several of his most well-known poems are included. "The Art of Poetry," as able an explication of the meaning of art, life, and eternity as you might ever read and "The Tango," a poem about (among other things) Argentina ("The South, behind suspicious walls,/Keeps a knife and a guitar." In conclusion: "An impossible recollection of having died/ Fighting, on some corner of a suburb.")

Borges is considered to be a modern master, and this collection illustrates why.

Borges!
Borges is with Joyce, Proust, and Kafka among the titans of literature of this century. This personal anthology ranks with his best work, and will be read when the second rate books, and second rate reviews, have been forgotton. Order now!

Required reading for I Ching
I was pleasantly surprised when I started reading this book. Mrs. Anthony has clearly explained the meanings and meaningfulness of the I Ching -- not an easy task! This book should be required reading for anyone attempting to understand the I Ching and anyone on the the path to self-knowledge. This book goes hand-in-hand with Wilhelm's translation of the I Ching and with Carl Jung's works on the subject. There are a lot of mediocre writings on the I Ching but this one far out-classes anything I have read so far. I enthusiastically give it a five-star rating! I also recommend reading Natural Spirituality by Joyce Rockwood Hudson along with this book.

A work of spiritual genius
This is another outstanding achievement along with Ms. Anthony's "A Guide to the I Ching". Carol K. Anthony's work can make a genuine claim to greatness and demonstrates astounding wisdom and insight. These two books provide a bridge between the Wilhelm\Baynes I Ching and the modern world. They also grant us an opportunity to reliably access the hidden world of the Sage. In fact they seem to speak with the the authority of the Sage itself. With these three books and a devoted attitude I believe the highest realisations could be experienced. What more do I need to say?

Beautifully written
The worlds of science and religion have never touched each other so closely as in this book. I read it in one sitting.

Beautiful
Anyone can read this easy book, although it is written by an eminent professor of physics. It is beautifully written. Van den Beukel has the power of endowing science with the beauty of poetry.
This book is to science what Garder's "Sophie's world" is to philosophy. I wish it as much success as Gaarder's book. Van den Beukel is also smart enough to consider science from a philosophical perspective.

A clever new device for an old-fashioned kind of mystery
It's British, it's amateurs solving a murder, the clues are all in front of you. What's better? And then on top of it all, this book gives us a crime club at which the members present their individual results and critique each other (with some dry wit at the expense of the genre). Great stuff.

What a delight!
I read this book after seeing it mentioned over and over again on best-mysteries-of-all-time lists.

Berkeley's novel is built around a fictitious, famed detection club (no doubt based on a real club that had authors such as Christie, Sayers and Dickson Carr as members). The members of this illustrious club set out to solve a mystery revolving around a poisoned box of chocolates. Every sleuth turns in a seemingly plausible solution, each topping the previous person's explanation. Until the end, that is, when a less-than-likely member offers the most surprising (and probably correct) interpretation of the facts.

Not only is this a real puzzle of a book, but it gently and self-consciously tweaks the fair-play traditions and cliches of the ultra-British "Golden Age."

It's very clever, very funny, and reads like a shot. What else do you want from a mystery?

It Takes Two
The Power of 2 by Anthony Sciré (shur-RÁY) is all about relationships. You will discover why you should hand out your business cards two at a time. You will learn to "circulate and percolate". You will find the essential skills that build solid relationships.

This book will encourage and inspire salespeople. And everyone is selling something.

If I am ever accused of being nice to someone, this book is to blame.

Sciré loves people and it shows. I love this book and am giving it five stars.

Dan Poynter, ParaPublishing.com

The Power Of 2: Win Big With People In Your Work And In Life by author, international businessman, and motivational speaker Anthony C. Scire is a solid, "reader friendly", guide to building productive, mutually beneficial relationships with other people, whether in business or in the personal areas of life. From the importance of a sociable attitude, to learning how to master one's emotions, to building "high-touch" relationships, to adapting in an increasingly technological workplace, The Power Of 2 is a thoroughly practical and even inspired resource especially suited to the paradoxically globalized yet socially isolated world of today.

best tape I've ever heard
This is the most inspirational tape that I've ever heard

Interview with Dr. Wayne Dyer is superb!
As an author, therapist and a college educator I routinely recommend Tony's interview with Wayne Dyer to my students and clients. In fact, I often play that section of the tape for my classes. Wayne Dyer reveals the tremendous work he put into marketing his book YOUR ERRONEOUS ZONES to make it the best selling book of the decade. Nevertheless, it didn't seem like work inasmuch as he was doing what he loved, rather then trying to make money. The tape espouses the myth: Success is merely good luck . . . just ask any failure. If you want to learn to believe in yourself and follow your dream then this interview is for you. I highly recommend the interview to all aspiring authors when I give seminars on "How to Publish Your Book." Very lively and humorous.

The greatest audiotape ever!!!
On Creating Extraordinary Relationships is a 3 hour tape series on how to make relationships work better through better communication, understanding and listening. The tapes talk about some basic differences between men and women and what to do about it. I had a lot of fun listening to it with my then girlfriend (now my wife!). We were laughing so hard because it was so funny yet so true! After listening to the tape we learned so much more about ourselves and each other. What makes it very valuable is Tony Robbins and John Gray cite so many examples and situations in our everyday life where conflicts arise and give practical insightful tips on how to improve the situation. Some of the words used also act as positive trigger devices that just by mention of the words during more challenging situations it makes the moment lighter. I love this so much I have to date bought 22 sets of this to give to friends! This is something I recommend highly!

Entertaining and Packed with Practical information
Robbins has done it again. The Power Talk series is well known for providing interesting insights by top authorities. Dr. Gray is well known for his unique perspectives on relationships. The combination is electric. This is three hours of pure insight into how men and women relate, and how to make the relationships you have into the relationships you want. As if that wasn't enough, these guys are hilarious. You will enjoy this tape, and you will learn from it. Buy it!

A great book
Nownes' book on organized interests in american politics is quite simply the best in the field. He covers the standard subjects (the influence of groups in Congress, the bureaucracy, origins and maintenance of groups, etc.). In addition, however, he discusses the impact of organized interests in state and local government. Surely this is an important area of american politics that is too often ignored by scholars of interest groups. His focus on organized interests instead of interest groups is also worth considering.

His writing is always clear and often witty. He has made a number of difficult subjects easy. His discussion of the "seamjob" on page 115 is a great example. Until reading this book, I thought a "seamjob" was the same as "demosclorosis." Now I know differently.

If you're looking for a clear, informative and often entertaining book about organized interests in american politics, this is it.

One of the best organized interests books out there.
from the back "the first title in the New Diretions in Political Behavior series, provides readers with a comprehensive understanding of interest group politics in the United States. The book examines how organized interests are born, how they survive, how they operate, and how they influence public policy."

As former student of the author, I can say that Dr. Nownes knows his stuff. His classes were always fun, but I left knowing a lot more than I went in with. His book, "Pressure and Power" is an excellent source for info on organized interests. Nownes has written extensive amounts on this subject in the past, and continues to be an expert in the field.
