Tales from a Darkling Pool

Love the Dark Twists
This is a great book using some of the usual antagonists but with a different ending. The stories were easy to read, although if I had to pick a flaw, some were a little too short, almost like teasers. Still, a great piece of work with Randimer's Journey and Savikil as my favourite stories.

Targum Jonathan of the Former Prophets: Introduction, Translation and Notes (The Aramaic Bible, Volume 10)
Published in Hardcover by Liturgical Press (July, 1999)
Authors: Anthony J. Saldarini and Daniel J., S.J. Harrington

An outstanding series
"The Aramaic Bible" is an outstanding reference work which is indispensible for any serious student of the Hebrew Bible. The Targums were Aramaic translations of the Hebrew Bible interspersed with rabbinic commentary. The Targums, which date to the middle of the first millenium and earlier, provide insights as to how the Jews (and some early Christians) actually interpreted the texts. Until now, it was difficult for someone not versed in Aramaic to have access to these documents; thus the appearance of not just a translation, but a scholarly edition is most welcome.

I used several of these volumes (including this one) in seminary while doing exegetical papers and found them informative beyond belief.

inspired summer cooking with right amount of effort
Worthington's book is superb, as are her independent titles (she also has published some titles for Williams-Sonoma but its editorial efforts takes away from the specialness of her own efforts). Her 3 cookbooks have become my standbys for entertaining of any kind -- and all year around. The Taste of Summer is a wonderful collection that I have been using year after year and never tire of it. And her recipes never fail to bring rave reviews from my guests. Worthington is an inspired writer and chef, and I look forward to her new release in the fall

a key-stone for researching Postmodern japanese architecture
Many books on contemporary Japanese architecture are designed as glossy coffee table books surrounding historical essays. Webster has finally struck upon a combination of technological accuracy, anthropological context and plain good writing. I believe that these three factors each alone are important to the research of Japanese Postmodern architecture, but through Columbia University and Anthony Webster, all three have been woven together to produce an informative AND interesting read

That's It! - So much more on so many levels
That's It! Thoughts of Fantasies, Half-Truths, and Outright Lies is a startlingly frank exploration of an incredible range of common emotions and life experiences from a uniquely masculine and African-American perspective. The openess and honesty of this compilation of poems and short stories transcends the boundaries of race and gender to resonate with most readers, who have ever experienced love, loss, the exhilaration of the creative process, and the struggle to connect with a partner as well as friends, family, and community. Written with a refreshingly masculine point of view and with a perspicuity not often captured even by other male poets and authors, That's It! appeals to men by giving an articulate voice to many of the shared feelings and truths of the male experience, while welcoming women to a unique window on the male soul.

Absolutely Essential Reading
This is by far one of the most important books that anyone can read about iconography. Ouspensky covers just about everything: the history of icons, the theology behind them, the defense of icons and their veneration, the difference between Orthodox Icons and other forms of art, etc. This is must reading for every Orthodox Christian or anyone interested in Orthodoxy, especially for protestants.

The Theory of Intermolecular Forces (International Series of Monographs on Chemistry , No 32)

Nature's microscopic forces
Intermolecular forces pervade the whole of chemistry and biology. Just think about two molecules that are going to initiate a chemical reaction, or about the transduction of biochemical signals via ligand-binding at the active site of a membrane protein. These are but few fundamental processes without which life would not exist. However, in spite of the overwhelming importance of intermolecular interactions, few books have been fully devoted to this subject. Stone's book attempts to illustrate the theories and models that have been developed so far by physical-chemists in order to describe the forces acting among molecules. Across 13 chapters you will find in-depth descriptions about electrostatic interactions, atom-atom potentials, intermolecular perturbation theory, distributed multipoles, etc. The mathematical treatment is rather advanced and it requires a basic knowledge of quantum mechanics. Future editions (if any) might include some material about the theoretical treatment of interactions within large molecular systems, such as DNA-protein and protein-protein complexes. All in all this is a good and comprehensive book which is worth of being in your bookshelf. Another book on the same subject is "Intermolecular and Surface Forces" by Jacob N. Israelachvili.

A somewhat advanced introduction to number theory
I love numbers. I love their properties and how they seem to keep their secrets to themselves, revealing them only after extensive effort, sometimes taking decades of struggle and frustration. However, the basic functions of number theory are well within the grasp of anyone with a knowledge of basic algebra, a willingness to learn and a good basic resource. The first two are up to you, but the last is covered if you have this book.
I found the explanations of the functions rather straightforward, although they are a bit more advanced than you will find in some other introductory books. This reflects the origin of the material as the substance for a one semester course in number theory for junior level undergraduates. A large number of exercises are included, with solutions to many given at the end.
This book can be used in several ways. As a textbook for a first course in number theory, as a resource for anyone wishing to learn it via self-study , to brush up on skills that have gone stale, as a reference or if you just love to read about numbers. I strongly recommend it.
