A wonderful, indepth account of St. Anthony Falls!
This is an extraordinarily detailed account of the St Anthony Falls cataract with all the names of it's founding father's, companies and buildings that rose and fell around the whole area. This is a must have for anyone who is interested in the history of the downtown Minneapolis/Gateway/Falls. Having worked in one of the buildings that was talked about in the book for the better of five years I have come to appreciate the wonderful history of Mill City as it once was. I highly recommend this book, especially given the fact that the brand new Mill City Museum will be opening up in May 2003.

Excellent poem dealing with humanity's place in the universe
Faust is an epic poem penned by the incomparable Goethe. He, the German Shakespeare, writes brilliantly of the universal scheme including God, Satan, and all manner of other creatures. At the center, however, is the good Dr. Faust. Faust is the subject of a bet between God and Mephistopheles. The story is thus set and Faust and Mephistopheles take to the world on a journey which leads the doctor into lewd affairs, titanic conflicts, and, eventually, introspection and self-discovery. It is a tale which any can relate to and through Faust's journey the reader discovers much about himself. This is an excellent poem rivalling anything written by Shakespeare or even Dante.

i fancy the ferret fancier
this is the story of a young irish lad who is coming of age. he learns many of lifes lessons the hard way, but still manages to avoid getting into too much trouble.... the ferret symbolizes his life... being directed by those in control of him (ie: his parents, teachers, peers, girls, etc.) through the first two thirds of the book, but eventually being freed from his chains of lust towards women and acceptance....

a good read... with a hint of irish dialect...

Feynman is...well, Feynman
I ordered this book, not knowing what to expect...whether it would be aimed at a general audience or (like his Physics Lectures) something even professionals have to work hard to master. As I started reading it my first reaction was, groan, I've been programming for over fifteen years and this is definitely for total beginners. He gives a brief introduction, a "file clerk model" and then introduces "instruction sets". With his first exercise you begin to realize this is not going to be bedside reading. If you try to think the problems through it is definitely uphill, but once you get to the peaks the sight is exhilarating... This book is demanding but ranks among the best to have come out in a long time (but then I happen to like the three major aspects of the book, math, physics and computer science so maybe I am just a bit biased).

Anthony has done a great job putting this book together (with a little help from his friends). This book is written in english, not technical jargon. He knows what he's talking about and explains it beautifully. A must read for every fire officer or anyone who wants to be a fire officer some day. Whether volunteer or career, this is the book you need!

A book that "bears" a message...
A book that "bears" a message....

This is not just another book about teddy bears. It has a much deeper meaning powerfully expressed in the beautiful full-page illustrations. The story is centered around the Great Bear in the sky who through acts of kindness and giving, brings hope and joy to the lonely children on earth. It is a perfect bedtime story and a book that can be read to a group of children because of the large, clear, and poignant illustrations.

Excellent Biography
I first read about Mercy Otis Warren in a biography of John Adams. The sister of James Otis, one of the first American patriots unfortunately silenced due to illness caused by a severe beating over politics, Mercy married James Warren and had six sons. She was involved with the politics of her time and spent much time with John and Abigail Adams. She also was a political writer and during the American Revolution penned many pamphlets crusading for the cause of freedom. Her relationship with Adams was temporarily disrupted during the dispute over the Constitution and her epic history of the American Revolution further served to facilitate this break.

This story is particularly interesting because Mercy and her husband James were relatively minor characters during the war and the reader gets a well presented viewpoint of what it was like to gamble so much on the new government. Neither Mercy nor James were personally rewarded for their efforts and yet their strength of character and perserverance helped shaped our country. Mercy was able to function as a beloved mother and wife and yet maintain a role in the intellectual life of the new country. I would strongly recommend this biography. Yet I would also hope that someone current author would undertake the project of a new biography on this interesting woman and her times.
