Good, non-scholarly introduction
This is a good introduction to Frege's philosophy for the general reader and undergraduates. It is fairly accurate, though very uncritical, and doesn't go into too much detail or use too much philosophical jargon (at least not without explaining it). This is a good feature for those unfamiliar with Frege, but if you are already familiar with Frege or analytic philosophy and/or have a good basic knowledge of formal logic, this book will probably not be worth you time. But, let me emphasize once again, if you are just getting started, this is a very good book to start with.

Recommended by a French friend.
I just started this book, strange that it says here its not published yet, hmm. Actually, I have a very old edition that was given to me by a French friend of mine who highly recommended this system to me. He teaches French as a foreign language and thinks its the best system for English speakers to use. It is really interesting, fun and even funny. Not too much new vocab in each lesson so you're not overwhelmed. The emphasis seems to be on real, spoken French, and not too concerned with rules, grammar, and the why's and wherefore's, the kinds of things that bog down beginning language learners. A brief explanation is given as needed, and then you just move on. I would like to see the practice dialogues on cd.

I have essentially no experience with studying French though it is not my first foray into foreign language study. As a language text goes, it seems to be fitting my needs very well. Someone who has studied French more than I may find fault where I cannot. To me, an enthusiastic beginner in French it's a good 4 and a half stars. I'm not far enough along to give this a 5 star rating which leaves me with my 4 stars for now.

Fast assimilation
This is a great course. You can learn french the same way you learn your native language. Just listen to the tapes or CD's everyday in your car and in about 6 weeks you will learn the basic. I think is a great language course, because you can find it in your own language and choose between 48 different languages. The method is easy so you can notice the improvement.

Good read to get started and get a good overview
This book gives a good introduction to argumentation theory and its twists and turns over the course of its existence. I found it helpful to get started, especially coming from a completely different field. It gives the essence of Toulmin and Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyteca but I would have liked to see a bit more on Austin and Searle. But then again the references mentioned are very extensive and can be followed up. All in all a good book if a bit pricey for students (whatever happened to the paperback cover?)

pretty good in the short run
my brother gave me this book. he is a pilot. (the airplane kind). i liked the first part of the book but then got side-tracked by my dog. we went to play frisbee in a field and i never got back to the book. my dog is learning to catch the frisbee and the day that i got side-tracked he caught it in his jaws about 60% (or maybe 70%) of the time. that is pretty good as i showed him how to do it only about 3 (or 4) times. the best way to get a dog to catch a frisbee this way is to reward them with a treat. but dont do it too much or they will get used to it. and that ruins a dog in my view.

A little book with much to share
John Callanan develops the spiritual exercises of Ignatius Loyola using the methodology develop by Jesuit Anthony de Mello. This book contains practices for meditation as well as processes and material to reflect upon. Ignatian spirituality is an excellent method for those with a great imagination. And De Mello's use of this process integrates psychology and some eastern meditation exercises in an eclectic spirituality. The title of the book suggests that these exercises are designed to assist people to become aware of the spirit of the divine in the experiences that we have each day. De Mello helped people to re-awaken within themslves new perceptions and shake off the dispositions that were part of their field of formation. De Mello helps people become aware of what they believe and not be afraid of entering into this. This comes at a time when leadership in the Catholic Church has become very repressive with "internal assent" now the watch word from Rome. De Mello methods are subversive to the Congrregation of Christian Doctrine. But unity with God does not neep permission from Rome. These are the ideas, small and simple, that will bring the Church into the kingdom of God.

compelling overview of the emerging "post-liberal church."
The authors - two pastors and a college chaplain - write from personal experience of the new "post-liberal" perspective emerging within the Protestant mainline churches. Thoughtful and readable, the book is particularly suited to the lay person who has felt that the church should be more than a well-intentioned institution dedicated to "making the world a little nicer," but has not been able to identify where the problem lay, or what the solution might be.

Clergy Journal
Joseph Modica has assembled something of a festschrift for Tony Campolo and his ministry in the interesting little book The Gospel with Extra Salt. This book covers a number of topics that the essay's authors deem appropriate to concerns that have played a role in Campolo's ministry. The authors address among the seven essays topics such as covenant, justice issues (including capital punishment), youth ministry, inclusive language, the biblical concept of family, and gender issues in local congregations. In many of the essays the authors allude to their ministry with Campolo and how he ministered to them. His fingerprints may be seen all over individual author's theologies. This is a good book on a variety of "current event" type topics. For those pastors who want to read how an evangelical approaches serious social action, then this is the book for that purpose.
