Who needs a freakin' lawyer?
I got caught stealing one of my friend's cars, and I couldn't afford a lawyer. I "borrowed" this book, so I could defend myself and I got off, so hey, the book's gotta be good.

Best choice for beginners
Apte and Monier-Williams are the most frequently used Sanskrit-English Dictionary, but Macdonnell has a number of advantages. Apte is a bit scruffy, MW is too big. Macdonnell's vocabulary is very comprehensive - it is rare that one has to go to Monier-Williams for a word not in Macdonnell, and unlike MW, it is strictly alphabetical, which make it very much easier to use. It is a handsome and easy-to-read production, unlike Apte. One tip for users - a whole page was omitted from the original 1923 edition as exists as an Addendum at the front of the book - if you can't find a word beginning with prac-, that is where it will be!

An excellent book featuring a variety of prayers.
Though small, Prayers to Mary is a lovely book. Virgilio Noe has drawn these prayers to the Virgin Mary from many different Christian traditions and rendered them in modern English. The illustrations, mostly Eastern icons, are beautiful. I have not found another book quite like it.

Background Information to the Times
This book presents the historical background of the late 15th to early 16th century to allow understanding of the times. Nicolo Machiavelli came from an old but impoverished family, yet was named Second Chancellor, and Secretary to the Council of Ten for War at age 29. He was commissioned to undertake diplomatic missions to many countries, which influenced his belief in political pragmatism. His travels thru Switzerland inspired his famous remark "only those countries where the people are well-armed are free from foreign or domestic tyranny". The Gonfalonier of Florence insisted on a policy of neutrality, and the peace treaty with Louis XII. After the French army was driven out, the Holy League invaded Florence and restored the Medici as rulers. Perhaps this showed that a treaty between states should only be kept when it is in their interest to do so? Machiavelli was now out of a job; he retired to a small village and wrote his political, historical, and literary works. Just as many out-of-office politicians also do.

Books offering advice to rulers were common in Medieval and Renaissance times; self-help books are still best sellers today. Machiavelli said it is better for a ruler to be feared than loved, but never be hated. His book, unlike Erasmus' "The Education of a Christian Prince", was kept by the bed of Charles V.

Should the moral laws that apply to ordinary people also apply to the ruler of a sovereign state? The history of our Presidents suggest what that answer is. "Watch what we do, not what we say" was not from a 16th century ruler! By describing how rulers acted, Machiavelli produced a warning so their subjects would not be taken in by their promises; "don't get fooled again".

A Day In The Life
The imagery almost seems true to life except that the actual decay of civilization as depicted in this book hasn't actually occurred (yet). The story is unsettling, so much that the reader can't avoid feeling as though he could be one of the characters...or perhaps wish he was. Who wouldn't want to live in a world of complete chaos where the government is so corrupt that the average citizen gets away with whatever crime or decrepit act he wants as long as the authorities don't care (what authorities)? Overall, a very realistic story, and well written. Thank you for your honesty Mr. Gold!

Almost certainly the best book ever written on economics
Mr Courakis here displays an unusual completeness of approach to the study of these disparate but fundamentally united branches of economic thinking. As a university student of economics, I have found my knowledge and learning incalculably increased through studying the work of this great, great man. I cannot praise the book highly enough, and so I shall cease where words fail me and would serve only to denegrate the manifest magnificence of this work.

Thank you, Mr Courakis.

Very good for the undergrad. archit.and civil eng. students
1.I find it very important that Mr. Walker has emphasized the importance of teaching general management before entering into the realm of the complicated teaching of construction management. Constr. Mgt. is not an independent teaching, but a very special case of management. It has naturally to be based on the foundations of the GENERAL MANAGEMENT. Congratulations.. 2. He makes some original definitions of management. I highly appreciate his definitions like "Management is the dynamic input that makes the organization work.". However, I expected to find several chapters in this book, explaining the basic activities, general principles and the elements of management, EXACTLY what Henri Fayol has mentioned 100 years ago. 3. IEEE has updated Fayol's terminology at 1984, printed and distributed to its members, who lead the world's most important sector, electronics and computer industries, as a study of Prof. Irwin Gray from NewYork Inst. of Technology. This gives a very good idea about the freshness of Fayol's teachings. The, in construction mgt.mostly referred, famous Proj.Mgt. Institute is the worldwide known sub-org. of the IEEE, Inst. Of El.and Elktron. Eng.s in USa. 4. Every student of technical schools should be taugth management completely from Fayol's teachings,as they learn physics from Newton and Planck directly. I hope that the Author forgives the harsh expression of a veteran construction man: Anybody who teaches management should not attempt to find the definition of management from the "Shorter Oxford English Dictionary' 100 years later than Fayol's excellent definition; no need to explore America again. 5. I congragulate the Author for mentioning H.Mintzberg in his book.. His analogy of construction projects with Mintzberg's configurations Professional B-aucracy and Ad-hocracy, is to be blessed. This analogy gives a good idea about the complexity of the construction, but underestimates the complicated task of management of construction projecst. I kindly remind that there is not a real management in adhocracy, and is very little in the professional b-racy. Management of a construction site of average size can only be compared with the most complex configuration of H. M-berg: THE DIVISIONAL FORM, with its numerous crews, subcontractors of various contracrs, its logistics, accounting, perfformance evaluations, etc. 6. I expected the Author of this valuable book would teach organization to the technical u-grad students directly from the teachings of Mintzberd and save several chapters for his teachings.. 7. This book is one of the best of its category I have ever read, on construction mgt, keeping Dennis Lock's place at the top, I hope the Author finds my comments not more than a few constructive remarks, and may take them into consideration for the further editions. Dr. Kirhan Dadasbilge, MSc.CE
