Indispensable!
This 13 chapter volume of 473 pages is indispensable for anyone interested in learning and/or referencing anything that pertains to the spirituality of the Christian East. The author, Rev. Tomas Spidlik, S.J., is the world renowned scholar/lecturer from the Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome. The bibliography (arranged in topical order), index of useful texts, topical index and index of proper names expedite the reader's use of the text and referencing other valuable material. The endnotes which follow each chapter are excellent in detail and provide the reader with primary source material. The material for the chapters is methodically developed from the general area of "Sources" (ch.1) to the specific topic of "Contemplation" (ch.13) before the characteristic traits of Eastern Christian spirituality are exquisitly summarized.

A Short Life of the Father of Monasticism
St. Anthony of the Desert was a hermit in the 3rd century who became the Father of Monasticism. This book is written by St. Athanasius, another great saint, who is also a Doctor of the Church. It describes St. Anthony's life, his miracles and revelations. There are many interesting stories and incidents from his life included. The book is divided into four sections: how he trained himself, his teachings, his work for others, and his last years. A short, but very worthwhile, biography of a great saint.

Facts come alive via fiction
"The author has given 'life' to this marvelous saint by taking the reader and literally putting them in the picture. As I read this book, I marvelled at the ability of anyone to write in such a way that allows one to believe they are right there---in the story. I came to have greater knowledge and even greater affection for Saint Anthony. By participating through the written word, I was allowed to travel with him on his missionary trips, his teachings, and his wonderful preaching as well as his audience with Pope Gregory IX, and his great love for St. Francis. His sermons were and still are life-changing and life-challenging. One measure of a person is not just how much 'they' loved but how much they are loved in return...and for St. Anthony, love returned hundred fold. He gave much love; he received much love. His deep and abiding love for our Savior, Jesus Christ is vitally apparent by the breadth and depth of his life commitment. Fact has been mixed with fiction in the book, but facts of this saint's life are not lost in the fiction. The book contains many vignettes of St. Anthony's life plus notes for each vignette in each chapter. The chapter notes give the source for the actual words of St. Anthony's sermons and other exchanges as well and why the author chose to give a particular fictional slant around which to build the facts. If anyone desires to read a book which gives flesh, bone, power, and spirit to this great saint...then this is the book for you. It is easy to read, but powerfully written. I would give it 4 stars, but because of the explanatory chapter notes I must give it a 5 star rating."

Great hands-on philosophy!
This book creates an immediate intimacy with the author, Anthony Damiani. "Standing In Your Own Way" is the clearest book on the ego that I have ever seen. Damiani uses philosophy and psychology to define the ego and presents a very practical approach on how to deal with it. Philosophy becomes alives through the clear thinking and helpful examples Damiani gives. A real killer for the ego!

My son loves this book!!!!
We originally bought this book for our little boy at Toys R Us and he loved it so much that he broke the spine of the book. The soundstory feature makes this a great way to get a very young child more interested in books in general and that takes him/her one step closer to reading. My boy especially likes the page with the cantina band where he can press the buttons and make the different instruments play. If you have a toddler tearing about your house I give this my highest recomendation!

Simply awesome!
Very surprised that this book is not reviewed much. Has great case-based questions for a majority of the tested topics with detailed and valuable answers that help to distinguish between even the most apparently similar diagnosis. It is question and answer based USMLE Step 2 review at its very best. Because of this book, I passed Step 2 after an initial unsuccessful try using other really dry, boring review books that just took up space on my bookshelf. Keep it simple, this book is all you need for Step 2. Thanks a bunch to Dr. Alario and the whole cast for having written such an exceptional review book.

Storyline ....
Since Amazon didn't post an editorial review, here's the description from the back of the book to help you decide if this book is for you: "A knock at the door betrayed a secret past so dangerous that it could destroy her life and her last chance at love ... Beautiful, sophisticated, American-born Comtesse Louise de Bernard thought she had left the passions and terrors of the past far behind her. Then one day, she was caught once more in the web of evil and violence that spreqad from London, to Paris, to Berlin, to an isolated French Chateau -- and the nightmare legacy of the past came alive and would not let her escape ..." Newsday called this a "Frist rate thriller ... Evelyn Anthony knows how to keep a story moving."
