Tanizaki Is A Master of Insight Into Desire and Loss
Tanizaki's later works continued to look back at a Japan which was being enveloped by the necessities and temptations of the West, militarism, and false [and conservative]myths about feudal Japan. I love Tanizaki's The Makioka Sisters (I think that book is his masterpiece) but I very much like these two stories, particularly Captain Shigemoto's Mother. The story of a man trying to understand how his mother came to be lost to him is intriguing and moving. I hope the Japanese never forget Tanizaki; unfortunately, Americans barely know who he is.

A n insightful resource
Tony Evans book was well received by my Bible study group. We thoughly enjoyed the the analogies of "the state fair" (I'll never view heaven with out a ferris wheel :), the penelty box at a hockey game, and the airport. The application questions at the end of the chapter were great motivators too. The main prob. we had was that he did tend to run off on tangents and some of his most interesting points were not backed up by scripture so we had to take them at face value oh well still a good resourse.

River at the Door: Unusual Experiences in Isolated Areas
Published in Paperback by River Microstudies (December, 1992)

History along the Mid-Mississippi
Allen Anthony has researched and studied records of long ago events that shaped the development and future of life along the Mississippi River: from southern Illinois, Kentucky, Missouri to Tennessee, bringing to life the nature of the inhabitants and the lifestyles of the residents. He relates the curious and erroneous manner of survey which shaped the states' borders and created unusual geographical circumstances. He tells of areas in and along the river that were changed by floods and nature over the last 150 years and explains some of the dilemmas which still exist involving property disputes between several states. The reader learns about navigation along this part of the river and how it remains a difficult but much used route of commerce even now. For those with some connection to the area, the book provides a valuable source of historical information which they can relate to. His description of the "islands" in the river and how they have been carved and shaped by the forces of the river along with how the families that have owned and farmed them have managed to live on the islands and still be a part of the nearby mainland is fascinating. The existence of the "islands" is little known outside of this mid-south region and many long time residents of this area are uninformed about them. A great read and resouce for those who love the river.

A gem of a political commentary
Anthony King presents a trenchant, witty, and insightful overview of what ails Congressional elections and the Congressional process. He convincingly makes the case that Congressmen are 'hyper-responsive' to polls, interest groups, and (ultimately) 'what the voters think'. Nothing principled ever gets accomplished in Congress because every Congressman is continuously running for office, with one eye on the latest poll and the other on what his (or her) opponent is accusing the incumbent of. King presents several suggestions for reform that would ameliorate 'hyper-responsiveness'- the suggestions deserve serious discussion

Great for non-Science major
As a business major, satisfying a Science requirement, I have found this book to be informative, interesting and great fun. I believe it to be will written and thorough. Information is wonderfully balanced by illustrations, fyi's and interesting supplemental facts. I have one significant complaint to register with the authors/publishers of this text. The review and discussion questions should be answered either at the end of the book or in the review book. It is extremely disappointing that these answers are not available. As a student with a 3.86 average, I take my education very seriously and find it discouraging and somewhat insulting that I can not check my own work. I would STRONGLY suggest that those answers are made available within the text or on web. Thanks!

Scorpian Rising: A Seaside Noir

forGET Carter
I don't know what book the other review of Scorpian Rising is talking about, but it's not this one. A slip up somewhere.

What we have here is a rollicking English gangster tale. Vincent is cool, like if old james Bond wasn't a pansy and worked for the mob instead of Her Majesty.

This is a good story, though i don't think anyone will be surprised by the revelations it holds. I'm saying this as a warningt o readers who like 'mystery' in their plots. This is NOT a mystery novel. i don't like mystery novels. Unless james Crumley is a mystery novelist, in which case I like, what, five mystery novels? I go for Jim Thompson, David Goodis, Charles Willeford, Paul Cain and James M. Cain. Hardboiled. Noir. Whatever. Just good hard hitting stories.

And that is what Mr. Frewin has given us. Better than The Sopranos. This is the best mobster novel i've read in a long, long time.

Give it a shot.

Much needed, greatly appreciated
I read this book almost a year ago, but I was prompted to write this review when I discovered (with horror)during a search for books dealing with contemporary Australian film that there was no customer feedback yet for this title! This book is a real treasure, even for those not remotely associated with Australian film. In fact, even divorced from film interests at all, this book is filled with interesting and engaging narrative from fascinating and colourful characters. As a film resource, it is unparralled. There is unfortunately a real poverty of material dealing with current Australian filmmaking that is this absorbing and entertaining. As a recently graduated film student, I would suggest this book as a great resource for film students in all nations, not just Australia. Australian cinema is unique, diverse, and booming on the local and global scene. This book is the most up to date resource that I could find, and by far the most enjoyable, it's just a really good read on so many levels. I really can't reccommend it enough, and I hope someone writes someting as good dealing with Australian film sometime soon.....
