The Japanese Experiance in Indonesia:Selected Memoirs of 194
This superb little collection of essays and journal notes sheds light on an obscure, yet important aspect of Asian history. We Westerners tend to give the wartime aims of Japan a uniformly dark aspect, yet there were idealists among the Japanese conquerors who dreamed of an Asia free of Western imperialism. One cannot be naive in dealing with this subject - the brunt of the Japanese occupation machine was geared to subjugation and exploitation. Yet in the East Indies there were many Japanese administrators who prepared the Indonesians for the inevitable battle with the returning Dutch.

Jerusalem revealed - clear, to the point, informative
The 'typical' tourist (independant of the fact if he booked a package touror is a individula traveller) will visit Israel in a 10 days -- 2 weeks trip. On such a trip, he will sejourn in Jerusalem for 3-4 days, which normally boils down to ~2 days in Jerusalem and a daytrip to the surroundings (Bethlehelm!). For such a tourist, the chapter on Jerusalem in one of the numerous Israel guidebooks (e.g. Lonely Planet, Badaeker, ...) should be sufficient. However, if your stay in Jerusalem will be somehow longer, you will want some more thorough information. 'Jerusalem revealed' is an excellent choice for such a case.

One has the feeling that the author really lived in Jerusalem for a longer period, and that fact that he is not afraid of letting his own opinion shine through gives the book a fresh, personal touch. One might critisize him for treating the sites of (modern) West-Jerusalem a bit too off-handedly. The Israel museum, for example, was dealed with in one paragraph only. But then the author is right by stating that a complete description of the Israel museum would be out of the scope of the book, and he just refers to the excellent guides published by the museum itself.

The guides is well organized, segemented into chapters and subchapters with clear headings to eae the orientation of the reader. Clear maps are provided. As well the christian, muslim and jewish sites are treated on equal footing. To stress this point again: What makes 'Jerusalem revealed' outstanding is its wealth of information. Many other guidesbooks, I had the impression, just 'blow up' the number of pages by adding colorful pictures, and offer only meager information considering the weight you will have to carry around. Although 'Jerusalem revealed' contains some beautiful photos, too, the emphasis is definetly on the text and to provide the reader with information which go beyond the '30 pages on Jerusalem' in the typical Israel travel guide.

PostSriptum: Info for trips in Jerusalem's surrounding (Bethlehem, MarSaba) are also included.

A JOURNEY IN THE HUMAN DILEMMA
Published in Paperback by Vulture Press (15 May, 2000)
Author: Anthony G. Hendricks
Amazon base price: $12.95
Average review score:

OUR SEPARATION FROM NATURE MAY TAKE US WHERE ??
This book of poems displays the roots of Hendricks' "political satirist" writings. His poems reflect a solid grounding in an awareness of the rhythms of the universe. A keen observer of the natural environment, he shows us how far humanity has strayed from its connection to the natural world that sustains us.

His rational mind does not presume to prophesy, rather *project* where our separation from Nature may take us. While many of the poems may not be considered lyrical, his reading of those that are not, become so in the reading.

Not all poets read their own work well. Anthony is one who reads his poems as he wishes them to be heard. It is a pity all readers of his poems cannot have a personal reading.

A good introduction to Jung
This is the first book I have read about Jung, specifically, so my comments are those of a neophyte. Forewarned is forearmed. Anyway, I thought this was a very well thought out, cogent presentation of a rather slippery topic. Storr, in my opinion, does a good job of sifting Jungian wheat from chaff; although he is an admirer of Jung, he can be pretty critical. Overall, I thought Storr did a very good job of presenting Jung's thoughts and contributions to theories of divided self, the positive role of myth, etc. The book does raise many questions which it leaves unanswered, but I suspect that is a function of Jung's eclectic philosophy, not Storr's writing style, which I thought was very clear. Overall, a good presentation, in the opinion of this highly unknowledgeable reader (although there are some pre-feminist comments that had me cringing).

King of the Delawares: Teedyuscung
Anthony F. C. Wallace, like his father, Paul A. W. Wallace, is an acknowledged authority on the Lenni Lenape, or Delaware, and this book is one of his finest. It tells the story of the enigmatic Teedyuscung fairly, accurately, and (at times) grippingly.

Interestingly, the flow of the book reflects the uneven, back-and-forth fortunes of Teedyuscung and his people in eighteenth century America, which can be somewhat dizzying for some readers. But it is well worth the effort, and the persevering reader will be rewarded.

The maps that are included in the volume are so helpful that one might wish there were more, but that fault is easily overlooked.

Learning through experimenting
As a professor of Astronomy, for a long time I have been trying to find the best way to help students fixate concepts that they mostly learn through formulas. This book is a very good tool for high-school and undergraduate professors with this purpose. I recommend its experiments since they are easy to be reproduced and understood.

Ultimate guide to Marvel Comic's greatest supervillain
If you're a fan of Marvel comic books, and more importantly, if you can't get enough of that Latverian supervillain, this is a great book. You actually get three reference books and the game board. You'll find comprehensive history of Doctor Doom, of Latveria and surrounding fictional countries, and the tools and weapons and sometimes allies of Victor Von Doom. There are some minor inaccuracies, and some of the information is now a little dated. Look for the list of Doctor Doom appearances throughout the Marvel Universe to help you complete your collection.

Learning About Fairness from the Life of Susan B. Anthony (Character Building Book)
Published in Library Binding by Powerkids Pr (January, 2003)
Author: Kiki Mosher
Amazon base price: $18.75
Average review score:

Susan B. Anthony and the character element of "fairness"
"Learning about Fairness from the Life of Susan B. Anthony" is A Character Building Book written by Kiki Mosher. This brief biography for younger readers examines the idea of fairness in the life of a woman who was well known for her life long efforts to secure the right to vote for women. However, Mosher makes it clear that Anthony was interested in fairness and equality as it applied to not only gender but race as well. This book is illustrated with full page historic photographs and engravings, only a few of which are actually of Anthony. The facing page contains a paragraph of simple text detailing incidents from Anthony's life and relating them to the idea of fairness. Other titles in this series teach children dedication from the life of Frederick Douglass, compassion with Florence Nightengale, honesty from Abraham Lincoln, leadership from George Washington, and bravery from the life of Harriet Tubman. I like the idea that biographies can teach students specific lessons, whether in regards to character or some other concern.

excellent as introduction or as a last minute revision
This is a really good book, which reads very well and once started it is difficult to leave down. The content is satisfactory alhough somewhat lacking in a few areas. It does not require a lot of prior knowledge which is of particular benefit to the beginner. One problem is that some areas are only dealt with on a rather superficial level which can be somewhat frustrating and requires other books to be used. However the details of the book are sufficient to achieve a pass in any undergraduae medical course. The layout and illustrations are fine, rather unremarkable. All in All a good investment for the average student. For those who have a greater interest in the subject a mor detaild text would be advised
