A Great Book From A Great Man
Even though I've never been to New Rochelle, I loved it! I read the whole book in one day. I was blessed to grow up across the street from Tony, Jackie and their three sons. Tony and Jackie were like my second set of parents. I was always welcome in their home and there was always great conversation, hearty laughter and great food. In fact, I am embarrassed to admit that I once ate twelve or Rosina's Pizza Frita at one sitting. It was fascinating learning about the struggles and joys of the immigrants from Southern Italy. Most importantly, it gave me great insight into one of the best men I have ever know, Tony D'Ermes!

Taken From News Release
This is Mr. D'Ermes first book about growing up Italian in West New Rochelle, New York in the 1930's, 1940's and 1950's. With exacting recall and precise detail, D'Ermes paints exciting pictures of his childhood as a first generation American born to Immigrants from Southern Italy. Told with humor and compassion, he portrays their hopes and dreams alongside their everyday struggles to learn a new language, new customs, and their frequent painful experiences with housing, jobs and government regulations. The story is told from the viewpoint of the D'Ermes family, but it is easily an "everyman" story of typical immigrant families of the period.

With rich detail, D'Ermes illustrates how the first generation children -- American schooled and street smart -- frequently helped their parents by reading and interpreting official documents, acting as translators with city and school officials, and helping them avoid immigrant scams and rip-offs.

The book details the primary institutions used by the Italian community to acclimate to this new culture and society, focusing on the Catholic Church, the New Rochelle School System and the Feeney Park Boys Club and Library.

Many Italian immigrants brought with them superstitious customs from the peasant countryside that can only be described as the "occult." Mr. D'Ermes describes the application of these occult practices to treat all manner of illnesses and ailments. Although quaint today, D'Ermes describes the prevalent fear of cusrses that others might inflict on your family and the application of chants, incantations, potions and charms that warded them off.

Of course no book of this kind would be complete without a full discussion of the foods and recipes that were used in his house and in many Italian homes, including Christmas and Easter feasts when special "religious" foods were prepared.

Mr. D'Ermes concludes with the values he learned in West New Rochelle and in the Boys Club that have served him well for the past 60 years as a business and corporate executive.

You don't have to be Italian to thoroughly enjoy this delicious slice of New York history from the viewpoint of a boy growing up in West New Rochelle.

A pediatrician's take
In my job as a pediatrician, I have given general counseling to families going through divorce and separation for several years, and thought that I was fairly savvy about handling these situation. However with my recent separation from my children's father, I have been shocked at how difficult even little decisions are about what to say or not say to the kids, leaving me almost paralyzed at times. This book has been a big help in laying out the issues and clarifying what is really in the kids' best interest, as opposed to the parents'. Realizing that the kids don't want or need or understand long-winded explanations makes it easier for me to talk to them about the situtaion; and being clear in my own mind on what is grown-up business vs kid business I'm hoping will help me to handle the next difficult months (and probably years) with more grace and integrity. It's an easy read with great cartoons too! Thanks, Dr. Wolf!

Incredibly helpful
I believe that intuition is a solid guide for regular day-to-day parenting, but effectively parenting kids going through a divorce calls for some professional advice.

Dr. Wolf makes some excellent points that are counter-intuitive. One that hit home the most for me was what to do when a child going through a divorce comes to a parent with untrue accusations coming straight from the other parent. ("Mom said that you guys had agreed to save money to take us to Disney World but you went and spent the money on jewelry for your girlfriend.") The natural response is to set the child straight and explain that the other parent is just angry and not telling the truth. Dr. Wolf convinced me - and I was very reluctant to believe - that the best solution is to tell the child that such issues are between Mom and Dad only and refuse to discuss it. What a relief for the child to be taken out of the middle and not have to try to decide which parent to believe. I remember how hard loyalty conflicts were for me when my parents divorced - the kids don't want to know about their parents' spending habits in the marriage or mean little things they did or did not do to each other. Dr. Wolf helped me as a new stepparent understand that keeping kids out of the middle is just more important than making sure they know the whole truth. Better for your child to suspect you probably did whatever your ex accuses you of than to be placed in the middle of an adult conflict and be forced to choose between parents.

Dr. Wolf's sample situations are VERY realistic. Here is a man who has really listened to the way kids talk and the things they get worked up about. His suggestions, which cover many common post-divorce dilemmas, make a lot of sense, and are a great help to parents going through a very difficult, emotional time and having some trouble figuring out what is really best for the children. My husband and I got a lot out of this book.

I also highly recommend "Children of Divorce: a Developmental Approach to Residence and Visitation" and "Mom's House, Dad's House."

"Isn't it Ironic, Don't You Think"
In this work the main character named Willy is a monkey. This book describes how Willy makes a new friend. In the beginning of the story, Willy is sad and lonely because he has no friends. As the story progresses he meets an ape named Hugh. They become good friends and spend a lot of time in various places together. The illustrations in this story is also very unique. All the characters are monkeys. Some illustrations even offer irony. In Willy and Hugh when they go and visit the zoo, instead of the cages housing animals, they hold humans who look rather scared. Browne not only adds irony to the illustration but also underhandedly suggests a double meaning behind this illustration. It makes a more mature reader question whether Browne is making an animal rights statement or just trying to make the picture funny. There are a lot of humorous and ironic illustrations in the story. Browne also plays around with the idea of irony in Hugh's masculinity. In Hugh's illustartions he is quite awkward looking. Hugh's shirt does not match and the vest that is over his shirt is three times too small. Hugh's pants are also not the normal length, not to mention that the knees in his pants are worn out. Dirt stains also are all down the front of his legs and on the back of his behind. The colors in these illustrations are solid, vivid, dark colors. These colors, although dark, do not add a dreary tone to the stories. The color's bold and vividness add to the story by keeping the reader's attention. The characters in these stories are male and the dark colors help to develop the character's masculinity. Seeing a monkey in a pretty pastel lavender jogging suit just does not have the same effect as a monkey in a dark green and red jogging suit. If the colors were lighter it would confuse younger readers about the gender of the characters The text in this works is written in a bold, medium type. This is done so that there is focus on the words, but more on the pictures. On the pages where there is print there are also pictures on the page and a larger picture on the opposite page. This story combines the text and its illustrations together. Browne seems very interesting and entertaining in this story. Whether the reader is young or old I believe they would find some entertainment in his books. Browne writes children's books that add a unique perspective to the work.

Friendship between two lovely apes.
We think it was a very sweet story about two totaly different apes, who met eachother in the park by accident. We love all the books of the ape Willy. He is very shy and so lovely. In the Netherlands he's called Sijmen.

Willy the Dreamer

A dreamer's dream
Don't be fooled by the reading label of this book, 4-8; the real reading label, or shall we say the enjoying label is 4 to 100 because this book is an homenage to culture on the 20th century. Willy is a little monkey (Anthony Browne's alter ego?), with all the vulnerabilities of a sensible child(you must read the four previous Willy's books), but in Willy the dreamer he doesn't have to face the problems that a sensible child must face in his every day's life, in Willy the dreamer our heroe just falls asleep in his confortable chair to be the king of rock and roll; a character of a favorite movie; or of a favorite fairy tale; a sumo wrestler; or just a father. If you're an art lover you will love the homenage to great artists of the century: Magritte, DalĂ, De Chirico. Don't worry if you're not an art conossieur because this book has so many readings, so many hidden messages, so many bananas, so many dreams that it can fit any child and grownup imagination. If you want to encourage your child to be a dreamer, you must give him this book. If you're a dreamer yourself, this surely will be the book for you.

Different
Different is good! Willy dreams of being everything from Elvis to a Sumo wrestler. There are so many different things to look at in Anthony Browne's books, it's almost a shame to read them quickly. I do so at our library's storytime but the real way to read this book is laying on the floor with a friend. I showed this book to my 20 year old son yesterday, now he wants a copy. I told him to check it out, and you should too!

Wittgenstein Reader (Blackwell Readers)

A handy access to Wittgenstein's works (themewise sorted)
A very good introduction to Wittgenstein's works. Given the fact that Wittgenstein did not write in usual essay form and did not encourage publications of his works in his life time, the book is very good contribution to the context of Wittgenstein's readers. An abridgement of the Tractatus is given as first chapter. A good balance of thematically and chronological basis has been adopted in the sequence of other chapters. The sample chapter titles are : The Rejection of Logical Atomism , Meaning and Understanding,... The First Person, .. The Nature of Philosophy, Ethics,Life and Faith. A good index is provided. Two weaknesses are : The author provides a two-page introduction. A 10 page biography would have been proper . Also a last chapter which summaries the nature of Wittgenstein's works and its relation to other philosophical works would have been better. From the point of view of Wittgenstein's scholars, the remarks are provided without any citation numbering. It complicates refering the book. Same sample Wittgenstein's remarks: The Wolrd is the totality of facts, not of things. Not how the world is mystical, but that it is. For the clarity that we are aiming at is indeed complete clarity. And this simply means that the philosophical problems should completely disappear. So if you want to stay within the religious sphere you must struggle.

An excellent compilation by an excellent author
I myself am not a die-hard fan of epistemology. In fact, the only works dedicated to that topic which I can stand for long are written by Anthony Kenny. He does wonders with Wittegnstein. His commentary and selections truly make the philosophy come to life. Even if you aren't particularly fond of the material, it still proves to be a highly valuable and highly readable work.

Yes Minister: The Diaries of a Cabinet Minister
Published in Paperback by Parkwest Pubns (April, 1985)
Authors: Jonathan Lynn and Anthony Jay
Amazon base price: $5.95
Average review score:

Excellent Political Humour
This book portrays the political drama with an excellent sense of humour.

You *can* teach an old Minister new tricks
Like the companion book for the later series, _Yes, Prime Minister_, _The Diaries of a Cabinet Minister_ follows in the British tradition of committing filmed episodes to paper. New fans to the series who know it only from the North American video release will actually find wholly 'new' material here; more episodes find their way into this volume than are currently available on VHS. But clearly, if you're looking for behind-the-scenes information or a discussion of _YM_ in the context of 1980's Britain, you've come to the wrong book.

No, this is a book for people who are so enamored of the dialogue, style, and even the issues of the television series that they want the same stories retold with a new twist. After reading this book, it's easy to see why there were enough such people that this book made the bestseller lists in England.

Even if you've seen every episode five times, this is fabulous stuff to add to your print library. Jonathan Lynn and Anthony Jay clearly have an ear for dialogue and a head for politics. They also are smart enough to put just enough new material in the book to reward diehard fans. By retelling each episode from the perspective of the Minister, they add a level of humor usually not present in the series: that of insight into Hacker's genuine opinions. To be sure, the book's basic paradigm is to keep all the dialogue from the filmed episode, with Hacker quoting exactly what the other characters say, but there's enough new expository material to set up those quotes that fans of the show will feel they're getting more than just a print regurgitation of the series.

Indeed, this twist proved so successful with the British readership that the authors decided to push forward and make a second edition, _The Complete Diaries of a Cabinet Minister_, which includes more pictures, more graphical elements (such as handwritten notes between Humphrey and the Minister), and I think even one more episode, that add value to the solid core found in this edition.

Which edition should you get? Given the out-of-print status of the volume, I'd say you should get what Amazon can find for you. If you liked the series, you won't be disappointed with either.

From the Author
Perhaps the most popular saint of all, Mary, the Mother of Jesus, has come to be known by innumerable titles of devotion-some lists include more than six thousand titles-reflecting her many qualities. Some people call her the Blessed Mother. Others, the Blessed Virgin Mary-BVM for short-or the Virgin, Our Lady, or, simply, Mary. From Ark of the New Covenant to Virgin of Tenderness, from Our Lady of All Nations to Queen of Peace, this proliferation of titles reflects the different ways people relate to Mary.
Calling upon Scripture, the writings of the early Church, the pronouncements of the saints, papal statements, and recent biblical and theological scholarship, 100 Names of Mary provides historical and theological explanations of the origins of one hundred of Mary's most popular and intriguing names from around the world and across the Christian millennia. Each of the names also includes both traditional and newly written prayers of intercession to Mary that reflect the particular charisms of her titles. Together with an inspiring new Litany of Mary, the stories and prayers in this book provide a portrait of Mary
as mother, companion, disciple, apostle, and advocate who continues to guide the people of God on the path to holiness.
