A nice little introduction to a classic British scandal
Summers and Dorril take the reader through the background of the Profumo affair and the betrayal of Stephen Ward. It seems a well researched tome with plenty of details concerning how Stephen Ward, a respected chiropracter, was made the scapegoat for a affair that could have embarressed most of the British upper class.

I would advise getting your hand on the paperback edition which has an additional chapter on new information concerning Stephen Wards 'suicide' and his last hours. This book was the inspiration for the Michael Caton Jones film 'Scandal'.

How to Form Your Own California Corporation (9th Ed)
Good examples. Fairly comprehensive. Good discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of forming a California corporation. The Corporate Tax section has some good pointers. Good writing style! It flows. But the diskette has only a fraction of the business and corporation related forms compared to "Small Busines Kit for Dummies". Overall, I recommend this book for a new commer. Well worth the money.

Talking Bowling Tells All
This is a fun book! The insights into the lingo and personalities in the game of bowling shared here are priceless. Where else will you learn there are so many different words defining bowling balls? A pumpkin or DOA being balls that are ineffective when the get down to the pins.

So many of the great bowlers profiled by Taylor are colorful and already passing out of the knowledge of the young bowlers of today. As the bowlin host at BellaOnline.com, I'm accumulating a large library of bowling books and this is one of my favorites.

I Found It Volume 1
Published in Paperback by PULP! / High-Ki (19 December, 1999)
Author: David Anthony
Amazon base price: $9.95
Used price: $6.99
Average review score:

Through a glass, darkly
All the names and faces are blacked out of the letters and pictures David Anthony has compiled here. There is total anonymity. What we see on the face of things is something to laugh at, something to puzzle over. It's easy to see the authors and artists of these trashed treasures as headcases or worse, until you see a love note from a shy obsessed teenager, or a diary entry from a solipsistic slacker, and you realize, I wrote something just like this once.

I think the subtitle of the book, Evidence of the Human Condition, is quite fitting. In many cases, these articles are proof of what most people refuse to believe about themselves; that they are capable of baseness, depravity, meanness, fantasy, sickness, rage. Instead we find these things sloughed off into a dumpster, crumpled up in a ditch, or, in some of the more disturbing cases, placed deliberately in order to be found.

I gave this book four stars instead of five because of the layout. While the transcription of some of the chicken scratch handwriting is helpful, there are sometimes hazy images in the background that are distracting and unnecessary. I think that the documentation can speak for itself, and embellishing it with extraneous or unexplained artwork enervates the impact of the compilation.

Aside from this minor setback, I Found It! is sheer genius, leaving us with two questions: Why wasn't it done sooner? and When's Volume 2 out?

a very well done book
At first I only got this book because it was illustrated by Anthony Browne. But the book is very inspiring for younger readers. I don't want to give away the plot so I won't write anymore.

Ill-starred Captains: Flinders and Baudin
Published in Paperback by C. Hurst & Co (Publishers) Ltd (01 March, 2001)
Author: Anthony Brown
Amazon base price: $

Final Heroes of Pacific Navigation
Nicolas Baudin and Matthew Flinders were commissioned by their respective governments to chart the unknown coastlines of Australia (then known as New Holland). Both did brilliantly well: Flinders making the first close circumnavigation of Terris Australis (or Australia, whose name he invented), and Baudin charting the the last unexplored slab of Western Australia, plus making numerous botanical and other scientific discoveries. Both captains, however, met with disaster: Baudin dying on his return (only to have his posthumous reputation sullied by a hostile biographer), and Flinders detained for five years by the notorious Governor Decaen, the Napoleonic commander at French Mauritius. This is the first book to chronicle their achievements along the same timeline, and naturally the narrative reaches a climax where they meet at South Australia's Encounter Bay.

A must for anyone interested in gardening or history!
To truly understand something you have to dig into its past. An Illustrated History of Gardening gives gardeners a glimpse into how gardens have impacted civilization and how little of our art is new. When in the garden I have a better connection with those who came before me. Lots of historical illustrations, great for anyone creating a period garden. Also discusses the tools of the gardener, most of my most dependable tools have been designed by ancient civilizations. Also gives ground to what all gardeners know, gardening is essential to civilization.

Earth is the battleground for Heaven and Hell
"GURPS: In Nomine", the game that proclaims: "Earth is the battleground for Heaven and Hell", allows players of GURPS to make characters that are Angels and Devils.

The plot is very simple - Angels are real, and so are Devils. God created the Universe with the aid of a Symphony - sort of like music that then controls things that go on in the world. Thus by using their own music, Angels, Demons, and even some people, can control parts of the Symphony and turn it to the cause of good - or evil. I must say, as a music fan, the idea of using music to create and manipulate the world appeals to me. This music is then used to influence events - from simple events like whether or not you go to the store today, to much more complex events such as a war. And =both= can cause a ripple effect that can influence the future.

With their almost magical powers and miraculous songs, both Angels and Devils can attempt to manipulate the events on Earth - possibly bringing about Armageddon. But such manipulation can cause a wrong note in the Symphony that can be detected by higher powers. It is only the efforts of other ArchAngels and ArchDemons that keep Ragnarok from occurring today. But there's always tomorrow.

It's yours to decide - do you want to play a fanatic Angel following the cause of light and good by attempting to keep the Symphony in balance, or do you want to play a fallen angel that is trying to regain their position in Heaven, or do you want to try a Demon that creates havoc wherever they go, or something in between? There are rules for creating several types of Celestials or Angels, and Infernals or Devils. You can even play a Corporeal or human, although they have a smaller part to play in this world.

It's loads of fun for players - they can try to use their powers and abilities to influence current events in the game world while trying not to cause dissonance - which would attract the attention of their bosses. And it's a lot of fun for the Game Master - they can look at current events and try to see how those events might have been caused by Angels and Demons fighting on Earth over humans and territory and then try to put that into campaigns.

If you want to try this game, be prepared. Some of the subject matter is very controversial. Some religious people may find the idea of pretending to be an Angel unusual, and the idea of pretending to be a Demon disturbing. However, having said this, I'd like to give this game four out of a possible five stars. I would have given it five had they included more material from the original sources, but interested game masters and players can purchase standard "In Nomine" books and easily convert that information to GURPS. I'd recommend the "Angelic Players Guide", the "Infernals Players Guide", the "Corporeal Players Guide", the "Game Master Guide", and the "Ethereals Players Guide" at least.

"GURPS: In Nomine" is based on the regular version of "In Nomine", which is also published in the US by Steve Jackson Games. "In Nomine" is, in turn, based on an earlier French RPG called "In Nomine Satanis / Magna Veritas" published by Siroz Productions. Try those if your appetite isn't quenched by "GURPS: In Nomine".

Internet Gambling Report III (3rd Edition)

Virtual Reality
The Internet Gambling Report is a great resource for anybody who is interested in what goes into making those virtual slot machines, card games and other Internet casino games that are burgeoning in cyberspace. In particualar, internet entrepreneurs wishing to start a casino or Internet gambling industry analysts/consultants would greatly benefit from this report.

The report, with inputs from some of the most respected experts in the field, adequately covers two of the most important aspects of Internet gambling: 1)Security- which, is a concern both, for the people running the casinos and for the people availing of the services. The report tells the reader the secure payment methods that are offered by some of the sites and also what factors contribute to security hazards.

2) Legality: There is a raging debate going on in the US regarding the legality of gambling. At present, however, the legailty is a gray area. The book dwells on this subject and even explores the legal status of Internet gambling in a number of countries apart from the US.

The report also addresses the technological innovations that make it possible for entrepreneurs to offer customers a near real life casino experience. Further, it gives the reader a lot of industry/market specific information on size, players in the field etc.

Two things that I felt could be better covered were: 1) The financials of starting a virtual casino from scratch with profitability figures and 2) The question about whether Internet gambling will lead to a rise of chronic gambling.

But in all a great report!
