Enthousiasm and knowledge
In this book one recognises the enthousiasm of an experienced teacher and recorderlover. With a profound knowledge of the instrument and its repertoire Rowland-Jones shows us what is possible with a recorder as an expressive instrument. His comments about tongueing are a little bit mysterious and at odds with what other experts (for example Walter van Hauwe) have written about the subject. Otherwise a fantastic book, which should be read by every serious recorderplayer, amateur and professional.

Seldom-Heard Perspectives On Polish-Jewish Relations
Most Holocaust-related material, especially the films, seem to always portray Poles in a unilaterally negative light. This volume, by contrast, is well worth the reader's time. It gives various perspectives on Jewish-Polish relations during and immediately after WWII. But I take issue with some claims. In one article, Antony Polonsky cites a document from the mainstream Polish underground (AK) wherein the AK would come out in open combat if the Germans tried the same thing to Polish gentiles that they did to the Jews. From this, Polonsky infers that the leadership of the Polish underground saw Polish deaths as worth averting, but not Jewish deaths. But this is a complete non-sequitur on Polonsky's part. Remember that, along with 3 million Polish Jews, 2-3 million Polish gentiles were also being murdered by the Germans, yet the AK did not start a national uprising on behalf of the 2-3 million gentiles any more than it did on behalf of the 3 million Polish Jews. What the AK leadership was actually saying was that a national uprising would not be in the offing unless a large fraction of the Polish population was in danger of being exterminated in a full-blown genocide, at which time there would be nothing to lose, for Polish people as a whole, to come out in open warfare against the German occupation authorities. The Jews, of course, had nothing to lose already in 1942, but the Polish gentiles, as a whole, still did. That is the actual reason for the AK witholding more overt military action on behalf of the Jews. Nevertheless, the AK did aid Jews in various ways, including supplying the Jewish Warsaw Ghetto Uprising with 50 firearms. This may not seem like much, but remember that every gun was worth its weight in gold. In fact, if was worth human lives, as each donated firearm had been procured at risk of a Polish gentile's life, and kept at risk of a Polish gentile's life. And, of course, each gun donated to the Jews meant one less gun available to Polish gentiles to conduct guerrilla actions against the Germans, and to protect Polish gentiles in the event of a full-blown German genocide against the entire Polish population.

A good overview of the changing face of the Am. Presidency
I have this book as a text for a political science class I'm taking at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Though a bit pricey at $40, I truly find this a solid read. It should be appropriate for all levels of reader, though it seems to be geared towards those with at least basic knowledge of the American political system.

Power and You
The Power Delusion is an excellent book about power and relationships. Tony cuts to the chase and exposes the fallacy of power trips. The most important line in the book says that whoever loves the least in a relationship has the most power. Consider your relationships with that thought in mind. Tony is honest enough to admit that the Religious Left is just as wrong as the Religious Right in forcing and legislating their views on other people.

A Great Companion
I used this book as a basic introduction to Ethics with an introductory class. The easy to read and concise nature of the author was very helpful. The book wouldn't stand alone, but very useful as a supplementary text. Good sections in back for students and teachers. The section on Values Conflict is also good. I definitely would use this book again.

This book has helped me in successfully carrying out an assignmemt for college work. I will recommend it to anyone who is interested in learning or understanding the baptist religion. Kenneth Anthony Lum explains the religion in topic form and very vividly, so there can be no problem in understanding what is read.

Prayer practices firmly in the Jesuit tradition
The current printing of the book has changed the subtitle -Praying Body and Soul: Methods and Practices of Anthony de Mello. If you expect to see stories as in many of his other books, this is not the book you are looking for. Rather this book is more along the lines of Wellsprings i.e. material for guided meditation best done in a group where someone reads the material aloud to the the group rather than an individual interrupting the prayer rhythm to read the next section. If not done in a group, one can at least tape the material.
Each exercise set includes a bodily awareness exercise, a focusing statement to set the tone for the exercise of reflection on a Biblical story - reflection in the Ignatian (Jesuit) exercise sense of imagining oneself in the scene - and a concluding quote, usually scriptural, that in some sense ties the exercise together without forcing a single conclusion.
As usual, material from de Mello is solid religious psychology/spiritual direction without being doctrinal.

historical Piers Anthony -sci-fi set in pre-industrial earth
(no space battles or anything) Piers Anthony is one my most influential writers simply because his work is so addictive that you can't put it down. This is smaller than most of his books, but it is entertaining and presents enough mesopotamia history and metaphysical considerations to make it memorable. Certainly comparable to much of his pre-80s sci-fi, which I always found very readable. (better than his most recent books I've read) Anthony's reading style is so engrossing that anyone who wants to get more into reading should try some of his work. (especially his older work, if you like adult themes I mean.)

Grube writes well, avoiding academic phraseology for the most part, and gives us an in depth understanding of Plato's basic theories on several subjects. He interprets Plato, but does not try to correct him. It is a very sympathetic reading of Plato, and this comes through in Grube's comments about Greek homosexuality and Plato's presumed preference for state authoritarianism.
Grube covers eight subject matters in separate chapters: The theory of ideas, pleasure, eros, the nature of the soul, the gods, art, education, and statecraft. In each of these chapters, Grube discusses the important dialogues associated with each topic.
If you are not familiar with all Plato's works (as I am not), this is a very good reference to the important dialogues covering each subject. ... it is a good buy for your Plato library.
