Lessons of Modern War: The Afghan and Falklands Conflicts

War in Detail
This book is the third of a series of four books chronicling modern conflict.

Vol 1. The Arab Israeli Conflicts 1973-1989. Vol 2. The Iran-Iraq war. Vol 3. The Falklands and Afghanistan. Vol 4. The Gulf war.

These books provide an in depth analysis of the various forces engaged in the conflicts and the losses sustained by both sides. The authors have studied the weapons systems employed and the tactics used, and from these have drawn their conclusions on what was the route cause of success or failure in these modern military conflicts.

The authors conclusions are hardly mind shattering but they are sensible. Based on what happened and without an agenda.

Aside from errors concerning the Blowpipe missile (which manages to make an appearance in nearly all the wars) and its vulnerability to flares, (it isn't vulnerable at all) and the failure of this type of missile against crossing targets. (The operator's not the system itself) The books are quite accurate and thoroughly researched.

These series of books are a valuable tool for any student of modern conflict.

descriptive dissertation of apartheid south africa
Anthony Marx brings a short history of the South African anti-apartheid movement in a descriptive, enriching way. Marx starts his time frame in 1960, but he does provide a brief history of the origins of the country and its harsh segregated policy of apartheid. the book deals with the evolution of domestic groups in their aims to reform the state. this is done, obviously, chronologically, stopping along the way for descriptions and analysis of the groups' activities and actions against the government. his stance holds him from giving an objective view of both sides of the historical picture in South Africa. the anti-apartheid groups discussed, such as the Black Consciousness movement, the ANC-aligned United Popular Front, and a myriad of trade unions, all are adequately described, analyzed, and reviewed, however the government's understanding of apartheid (even though it was catagorically WRONG) as well as the white minority's jaded thoughts of the non-white peoples of South Africa are not discussed for me to have seen their reasoning for holding on to the apartheid policy. nonetheless, if the reader wants to see how black movements succeeded and the an evaluation of their actions towards success, this book will be beneficial. i enjoyed his thoughts of each period in the thirty-year timeframe, and his ability to intelligently weigh the positive and negative outcomes. other respected persons (such as Tilly and Skocpol) credit Marx's ability to communicate the opposition movements development and evaluate their effectiveness.

The life of Cicero

A Passionate Defense of Cicero by a Layman
Anthony Trollope is an English writer of the Victorian period most well-known for his unbelievably prolific fiction. So both the reader of Victorian literature and also the classicist may be somewhat surprised to find here a passionate defense of the 1st-century BC orator and statesman Cicero. This is all the more surprising because Trollope wrote at a time when Cicero was under attack, especially from German classicists. In these two volumes, however, Trollope discusses Cicero's speeches, compares Cicero's life to that of contemporary Romans, and decides that Cicero was a great man and a patriot whose reputation should be defended. Although Trollope may be a little over-lenient regarding the orator's famous pride and bombast, his glowing assessment is (ironically) closer to some modern views than that of his contemporaries who lambasted Cicero from their positions as professional classicists. I heartily recommend the set to Trollope enthusiasts and to Cicero partisans, but the average reader of Victorian literature may find the classical dicussions uninteresting, while the average classicist may not be satisfied with Trollope's non-scholarly approach.

Good Guide Book...but...
Much more informative than LP's "Jordan & Syria" edition. There are a couple of beautiful pictures of Wadi Rum in here, and some decent background info on archeological sites around Jordan. Border crossing politics are made clear, and how to get around is succint. There is quite a bit of information packed into this book, covering everything from little-known facts about Bedouin life to opening/closing times at Karak Castle. The maps in this book are more useful than some other guides I've seen and I would have given this book 5 stars, but I know of another book superior to this one.... It's Matthew Teller's "Jordan-The Rough Guide"....

An examination of the foundations of Empire
This book examines the different ideologies behind the empires of the great European powers. This book does not examine the impact of empire upon native people, that is not it's focus. It can be tedious at times, but overall is very informative and interesting.

Getting to know LA from the ground up
Reyner Banham's writing is intelligent and entertaining. He has taken LA to heart and reveals how its "four ecologies" have affected its contemporary appearance and character. You'll not only learn how LA's architecture came to be as it is, but learn a great deal about the history and personality of the city as well. I read this book to get to know LA better. I couldn't have picked a better one.

The Lucky Horseshoes
Nancy Drew, Bess, and George Fayne were waiting for school to end. They were excited to go to their riding lesson after school. Bess showed all of her classmates her mothers earings. They were lucky horseshoes earings. Bess, Nancy, and George ran when the bell rang. They walked to the riding lessons. Mandy was showing off her new boots for the lessons. The riding teacher gave everyone horses, but Mandy got a wild horse. The horse was big and black. Bess got Mandy's old horse Buttercup. When the riders were going to ride, Mandy told Bess to put away her earings otherwise she would lose it. After riding, the earings were gone. Later Nancy went to the scene of the crime. She saw swirl shoe prints. The next day Nancy called all the riders n the room and examined the shoes. She found the matching shoe! It was Mandy. Mandy gave the earings back. She told Bess why she took it. Mandy told Bess she took it because she was afraid of the horse. Then she told the teacher and Mandy got Buttercup.

The End
