Excellent book on a tough subject
When Bennett first wrote this book he was unable to complete the manuscript, so in effect, this book is not complete. Neverthless, it represents a good introduction to spiritual practice in the Gurdjieff tradition, and also one that transcends the Gurdjieff Work into a wider arena. It covers different kinds of work on oneself, including Struggle, the often misunderstood form - Sacrifice and the magic and mystery of Grace. I first read the book back in 1982, and I find myself referring to it over and over again, both for myself and my students.

THe transformation of intimacy : sexuality, love, and eroticism in modern societies
Published in Unknown Binding by Polity Press ()
Author: Anthony Giddens

Average review score:

Why marriages turned into "relationships".
In this excellent overview of the great social experiment known as modern "relationships," Giddens, a leading theorist of political sociology, turns his attention to the world of the personal lives. It is Giddens' thesis that women have been the revolutionaries in a sea change that has occurred within the nature and structure of the family. As women emanicipated themselves from traditional structures of family, they were forced to be pioneers in understanding themselves and their relationships. Using Foucault and Freud as a starting point, Giddens explores the differences between the sexes in the light of modernity, dialectically comparing them with later feminist writers. The contrast allows Giddens to synthesize views into something compatible with his larger view of society in microcosm. Giddens introduces the idea of "pure relationship", a relationship freely entered into for mutual benefit for as long as it is beneficial as a contrast with earlier notions of marriage as role and obligation. He also hypothesizes the eventual replacement of romantic love, as defined by the view (or illusion) that there is a "special someone", with what he calls "confluent love" locating the specialness in the relationship itself. Giddens feels this change is part of a radical "democratization" of society going on at its most micro levels.

Some of this will be "old news" for those familiar with feminist literature, but for most people it will be an integrative look at what most of of have been experiencing without understanding. It may be a little too literate or scholarly for the mass market, but most people will find it interesting, if occasionally difficult. (One does not need to understand Foucault to get anything out of the book, however that particular chapter might be wasted.) There are only two shortcomings: [1] A general tendency to characterize men as the cultural laggards (though probably deservedly) despite a good section on the men's movement. I believe he could have explored more of the contradictions of men's current roles, as done by the more recent book by Susan Faludi- "Stiffed", and [2] a failure to explore what, if any, connection this micro "democratization" has with the increasingly hierarchial and globalized society at large. All in all, though, an excellent work.

What a fun read, I read it all in one evening
I loved this story about a young fellow who keeps on making his life work. It is so interesting to read about the depression and obstacles and the positive outcome of his life. I'd love to see it as a film. It's a great story for young people

Anthony Burns earns 4 stars
Looking for an exciting book that you can't put down? Anthony Burns would be a great one. A slave who has be accused for stealing and he is on trial, fighting for his life and freedom. It's a sad book because he's in jail with water once a week, food twice a day (which is raw meat, cornbread, and really just scraps of food. The end is shocking and it's a great book that I recommend reading. You will never put it down.

The Unfortunate Tobacconist and the Paradol Chamber

The Best of Holmes -- The Worst of Holmes
"The Unfortunate Tobacconist" showcases how well Anthony Boucher and Dennis Green can craft a Holmes mystery. The plot is well-constructed, the characters engaging, and Holmes is refreshingly humble. The story's only real flaw is that it suffers from a somewhat obvious solution--a shortcoming of many of the Boucher-Green collaborations. "The Paradol Chamber" on the other hand is as contrived and silly a piece of work as one could hope to imagine. In Boucher's and Green's defense, you must admit that Conan Doyle, who only wrote 56 Holmes stories, wrote several stinkers himself. Boucher and Green cranked out over 200 stories, and they did it on a much tighter schedule than Conan Doyle worked against. Regardless of the poor quality of "The Paradol Chamber," the chemistry between Bruce and Rathbone is perfect, and they never fail to entertain.

Every church leader needs to read this book.
This book has some great examples of how to reach out to the poor and the inner-city. It should be in the library of every church leader and in the heart of every christian. Too often we see a problem and don't do anything because we are not sure how. This book has some very basic lessons on what it takes and how to do the ministry we need to be doing as christians.

good reference but short on C examples
I liked the reference as an introduction to MPI, but it switched between fortran and C so often that I spent a fair amount of my time just trying to interpret the code samples and synchronize to the syntax of the language they were using. You shouldnt have that problem if you have used Fortran in the last ten years but i havnt touched it since college. You have to be able to work with both languages though because many of the key concepts are only demonstrated in one language. Also the examples were usaully spread out into mini snipets as opposed to a larger block that might show a more complete picture.

Great Review Book for USMLE/COMLEX
This book makes a great addition to your arsenal of medical board prep books. It's from the same authors of the Lange pharmacology review; a book rated high in the board prep bible: "First Aid for the USMLE Step 1". This book is more concise, however, and very easy to read. It gives you a good framework from which to build your knowledge base of pharmacology. It doesn't just provide lists of drugs nor does it drone on with minute details. Instead it explains the mechanisms of each drug class, providing most of the important drugs as well as their clinical indications, contraindications and toxicities. It does tend to shy away from offering mneumonics, however, but sometimes other people's mneumonics can be far-fetched and cumbersome in the learning process. I recommend the book as a starting point in getting a grip on the huge amount of material inherent in the study of medical pharmacology. It also works great as a last minute high-yield review of pharm before your exam.

A new point of view
The best part of this book (I read it a very long time ago) is that after I looked up from reading I looked at everything around me differently. I had just read a chapter from an alien's point of view and I had trouble reconciling the world I was reading about and what was real. A very odd feeling. If you liked early Xanth books and the books Piers Anthony wrote before them you will love this book.
