An excellent reason for NOT buying this book...
Here's a little excerpt from the book talking about communion:
"When the priest announces the tremendous words of consecration, he reaches up into the heavens, brings Christ down from His throne, and places Him upon our altar to be offered up again as the Victim for the sins of man. It is a power greater than that of Seraphim and Cherubim. The priest brings Christ down from heaven, and renders Him presenton our altar as the eternal Victim for the sins of man, not once but a thousand times! The priest speaks and lo! Christ, the eternal and omnipotent God, bows His head in humble obedience to the priest's command."
I ask you, "Who is more powerful, a priest or God?" Don't buy this book. Instead go here: ... and buy Preparing Catholics for Eternity. This book will change your life.

Outstanding Reference
This book is an easy to understand explanation of the Roman Catholic Faith. Active Catholics as well as those looking to learn about the faith will find this book helpful and informative.

The File on the Tsar

Average review score:

Interesting as a reflection of it's time
File on the Tsar is interesting as a compilation of escape theories popular in the 1970's, most of which have since been proven to be false, particularly in Radzinsky's The Last Tsar (which would be a good book to read after this one). Still, the writing style is engaging and the photos are well chosen. Take it's theories with a grain of salt and it is a fun read.

"Plots have I laid"
Sadly, with the advent of DNA and the fall of the iron curtain there is less and less mystery in history.

This book is a fine example of the fog and questions which surronunded the death (or disappereance) of the russian imperial family. However, as time has moved along, we now know that most of the ideas the authors suggest never occured.

That said I liked the book and felt that it gave a good treatmeant of the context within which the last Tsar and his family met their tragic end. The reader must always exercise caution about the conclusions even as you enjoy the text.

Justice and Its Surroundings
Published in Paperback by Liberty Fund, Inc. (August, 2002)
Author: Anthony De Jasay

Used price: $6.00
Collectible price: $19.99

Justice and its ambiguity
This book was not very insightful. Dejasay's ideas may be original, but they are terribly organized. This guy has the worst grammar in the game. As a legal positivist, his prescriptions for government are so vague they are almost useless. His ambiguous style of writing, complemented by his unclear ideas make for a poor read.

A No Fluff Book
*Justice and Its Surroundings* is a collection of prepublished works by De Jasay. It seems that he writes from a libertarian perspective; the least amount of government that we can have beyond necessity is ideal. His first section argues about the rise of the state. For instance, chapter three focuses on the question, "How does the state have the power to override individual choice?" One traditional answer has been that the state arises because without it, a bunch of people will act as free-riders that "mooch" off the investiment of the rest. De Jasay challenges this. The one thing that his book really stresses is the need for knowing what exactly we are talking about. To illustrate, a number of people, he claims, talk about how much we like freedom and principles like something akin to a Kantian equality principle. But what exactly does that mean? What are we to make as equal? While most people say, "yeah, we should have equality," they simultaneously don't know what that entails. In another chapter, he attempts to pin down what we mean by "justice."

What is nice about De Jasay is that he gets straight to the point. Rhetoric is minimized and he gets right to the arguments. For example, when he discusses "Market Socialism," he points out that many of its defenders are not precise on what they mean; they hide behind the banner of terms like "freedom" and "liberty," when in the end, it is really just "a dull mumbo-jumbo." In other words, some political philosophers will defend their positions without clearly presenting the arguments in favor of their position, or against the others. What De Jasay is doing here is clarifying for them what their view amounts to, and then presents a number of challenges that seem insurmountable now that the view is clearly exposed. In that sense, one should appreciate what De Jasay has to say. He is an intelligent individual who gives thought provoking arguments.

Even though he is a bright guy, he is not the best of writers. His work is extremely dry; and what is frustrating is that he often uses cute little metaphors, making it difficult at times to know what exactly he has in mind. I feel that his work deserves four stars based on his argumentation and topics that he addresses; but his writing style, I felt, was too much of an obstacle at understanding his book. Nonetheless, the book is decent and worth reading if you are interested in political philosophy.

A New Kind Of Dull
I think the only thing more boring then the periods of time the author describes in the book is the actual book. After the persistent call of a friend of mind to try another book from this author I did, or at least 125 pages of it. This is book was supposed to be a thriller it must have come after I stopped reading, and if it is a character study then the people the author created are the single most dull group out there. If you are a fan of this author maybe you can see the charm in the book, but if you are looking for a good read -keep moving.

A New Kind of War
Anthony Price's books usually contain a wealth of detail. This detail is combined with plot twists and turns that are often not fully explained. This forces the reader to think a bit, but can be off-putting as well. Price's hero/anti-hero, David Audley, is too smart by half, but I found the Audley character interesting in the extreme. Price's descriptions of pieces of the Anglo/Greek Campaign in a New Kind of War provided me useful insight into that star-crossed bit of history.

Good but boring...
This is a good book for someone who wants to get an idea about philosophy in general - the only drawback is that its very boring, I had a hard time to get to page 400 (i know there's more), if you'r the kind of person that can read boring stuff and go on with it, then this one is for you.

Idealist perspective
This book has many beautiful pictures and reads easily. In history making, everyone selects what he finds most important or interesting. In my opinion, this book is written with an overall idealist bias (which I disagree with, I am theist), and a leftist perspective in the section on politics. I was in particular disappointed but the very short treatment of Aquinas, whose philosophy is "beyond the scope of this book." I wish Copleston had written a shorter history next to his monumental work, so that it would compete with this present book.

Practical Usage of Ispf Dialog Manager
Published in Paperback by Springer Verlag (15 January, 1996)
Author: Anthony S. Rudd
Amazon base price: $74.95
Average review score:

Definitely not for the novice.
The synopsis in you advertisement says this book is for the novice. The book does not even tell one how to create a basic panel. It apparently is a handy reference for someone who is already well verse in the use of ISPF DIALOG MANAGER. Rather expensive book for no more knowledge than it imparts.

This book is excellent for ISPF application development.
This is the best book on ISPF I have ever used, including the IBM manuals as far as developing ISPF applications with REXX or CLIST. Other ISPF books contain pages and pages of screen prints you could simply see for yourself on the computer. Practical usage of ISPF showed me quickly and easily how to use ISPF skeletons, tables , and ISPF library management services within an application. These are features that are so poorly explained in the manuals I could not implement then until I read this book. It does assume you know some basics of ISPF, but it is an excellent bridge from the basics to more advanced topics.

Scapegoat: The Lonesome Death of Bruno Richard Hauptmann

Author: Anthony. Scaduto

A wonderful work of fiction...
Bruno Richard Hauptmann was the kidnapper and murderer of Charles Lindbergh, Jr. No speculative or fictionalized evidence by Anthony Scaduto or anyone else can change that unalterable fact.

I would give this book zero stars except that Amazon won't let me. What a waste of paper.

good book, more interesting in real life
this was a good book. i'd like to get that out before hand. i think that in real life, the actual event was more mysterious and intriging. while i'm not rating a movie, i think that an event that captured an entire nation's attention and sombody accused of killing "the eaglet" that everybody hated, could have used a better book. i would suggest reading about the "Lindbergh Kidnapping" before you read this book, so you don't get lost.

THE BOOK IS REDUNDANT AND VERY BORING.. USE BOOK IN CLASS...
THE BOOK IS VERY BORING AND NOT GOOD READING MATERIAL. I AM READING THE BOOK FOR A UNIVERSITY CLASS AND DISLIKE THE READING ALTOGETHER. THE AUTHOR NEED TO TO TRY TO DO AN UPDATED AND MORE INTERESTING VERSION OF THE HISTORY. HOW CAN I UNDERSTAND THE WEST INDIES AND VISIT THE SITE IF I CAN'T UNDERSTAND THE BOOK... VERY VERY DULL!!!!!!

Fascinating overview
This book offered so many fascinating insights into European and colonial history, the slave trade, the way nation states wage war, race relations--topics that are as relevant today as they have been over the last four hundred years. In the small stage of the West Indies you can see them all played out.

Poorly organized and written
Soul Blade is my favorite game, and I found a great FAQ from Richard Uyeyama online that covered how to unlock all of the secret characters, endings, costumes, and weapons. The only thing I had trouble finding online was a moves list (I have since found one), so I bought this book.

I usually allow for mistakes in books like these, but there are far too many. No index, poorly designed - hard to flip thru the book to find what you want. Secret codes listed in this book are wrong, or require you to press more keys than needed. It is nice to see all the moves - but they are not detailed (which is a float strike?). Also, the moves lists does not differentiate from "press" and "press and hold".

I do refer to the book on occasion, but I refer to FAQs I have found online more often.

Does its job
Has all the moves and secrets.

Unfortunately, it still doesn't tell you exactly how to pull off the critical edge attacks. Sure, it SHOWS you the button combination, but it seems impossible to physically pull it off in real life.

Very complete strategy guide. Each character is discussed.

I would say it is worth the purchase, but don't expect to get all the weapons in Edge Master Mode.......
