Katzung's Pharmacology: Examination and Board Review

Good for USMLE Step 1
The book contains a system review which may facilitate understanding the mechanisms how drugs work. Each group of drugs, say sympathomimetics, takes only several pages, followed by a series of USMLE-type questions. A little bit better than Lippincott's pharmacology board review. I've read both of 'em.

Excellent pharmacology book, but time commitment necessary
This book was extremely useful for me to study for the boards. It is detailed, yet very clear, with good explanations and tables. It emphasizes on drug use, interactions and adverse effects. Each chapter includes a series of 15-20 relevant questions, and you will find at the end a summary of all key drugs in a few words (very useful for a final review just before the exam). The book also includes 2 board-type examinations of 120 questions each.
However, it requires a time commitment of several weeks to be really useful. Therefore, I will strongly recommend it to study during your school classes and then for review, or for international medical students or graduates who, like me, studied pharmacology years ago and need to review everything.

Let thy Kingdom come, thy agenda be done!
Are you ready to start living an amazing, exciting, adventurous, victorious Christian life? If not, go read the yellow pages! If so, this book is soooo for you!!! This book is so good it made me cry! For so long God has been dropping little things into my spirit. To read what God has been talking to me about over the past three years in one place at one time was like a sward that pierced my spirit. This book has and will continue to change my life. God has used Dr.Evans to put words to my heart cries. I have found myself shouting AMEN as I read. Every day is a new adventure now that I am living on His agenda and not my own.

Dr. Evans outlines what the body of Christ needs to be doing and how we can start fulfilling the call that God has on our lives. It is an overall view of how we, as the body of Christ, can change the world. We are not just taking up time and space until Jesus comes back. We need to be about our Father's business. Dr. Evans breaks down exactly what that means in ways we can understand. Too many of us are staring up in the sky with our bags packed waiting for Jesus to come back. Some of us are not sure weathering to fight or wait for the great flight. At times, the job of disciplining the nations seems overwhelming, but if we take it bit by bit with everyone functioning in his/her gifting than the job seems so much more doable. Besides, we have the power of the Holy Spirit to fill in the gaps. He takes our mind from an earthy perspective to a heavenly perspective. What a difference a change of scenery makes! This book is a must for each and every Christian who wants to live a victorious Christian life that bears lasting fruit. Dr. Evans stays true to his great illustrations as well as his humor. You can almost hear him laughing as he writes.

Take your time. Pray before you start reading and ask God to show you the world from HIS perspective and not our own. Enjoy! May God show you HIS agenda in all things!

Living the "Kindom Agenda"
Tony Evans writes this comprehensive book with clarity and with the authority of God's Word. I found this book challenging to live my faith in every area of my life: my personal life, my family life, my church life and my community life. Dr. Evans touches on subjects many authors are afraid of, such as the woman's and the man's biblical roll in the family and church, racism, and politics. He doesn't hold back the truth as expressed in the bible. Christianity is not a one day a week religion; as this book suggests it is for every day, every moment, every area of our lives. I would recommend it to all Christians in all stages of maturity.

Knott's Handbook for Vegetable Growers
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (January, 1980)
Authors: James Edward Knott, Donald N. Maynard, and Oscar Anthony Lorenz
Amazon base price: $24.50

A helpful reference tool
First published in 1956, this handbook is an indispensable, up-to-date companion both in the field and in the marketplace. Topics include the vegetable industry, greenhouse vegetable production, soils and fertilizers, water, pests, weed control, harvesting, storage, and seed production. Packed with quick-access graphs, tables, charts, and line drawings, the 4th edition offers new information on drip irrigation, seed germination, plant tissue and sap testing, windbreaks, and weed management. It also gives advice on allowable pesticide and herbicide use and on the latest worker protection standards. The appendix contains sources of vegetable information, providers of vegetable seeds, periodicals for vegetable growers, and U.S. units of measurement and the metric conversion factors. A change from the spiral-bound 3rd edition is a sturdy, flexible cover to help hold pages flat.

Fantastic reference work to answer disease&insect problems
I use this book as my first reference work to answer disease and insect problems in vegetables for the public. The layout is extremely easy to use. Each section is very clear and concise. This work is also used for establishing small plot research design that is comprable to the large scale production fields. All the information one needs is in this handbook for vegtable trials and for large scale production. There is very little else on the market that is as comprehensive as this publication and as accurate regarding information provided.

correction of previous date in review
I must correct myself on the date of Mr. Stockanes untimely passing. The year was 1997. My apologies for the type-O in the previous review. Everything else still stands... WONDERFUL book! Thank you- SJL

Ladies who Knit spins wonderfully....
"Ladies Who Knit For A Living" is a collection of short stories by Westville, Illinois native Anthony E Stockanes. Beautifully written and imaginative the author has drawn on his own experiences and the people around him growing up in both Chicago and downstate in Westville to create a work that will charm both old and young alike, tho I don't recommend for children, the informed and intelligent preteen may enjoy Mr. Stockanes humour. The only thing that I find lacking unfortunately in this book, is a short story that the author published in the Daily Illini in the late 70's I believe entitled "Seed Notes" which was, he later revealed, based on fact. Sadly, we lost this wonderful writer to cancer in 1999, But this work, a compilation of his stories is timeless and a testament to his genius. We can only hope that perhaps eventually the U of I press will re-release the book with the addition of "Seed Notes" and a few other select stories Mr. Stockanes did not include the first time around. Very highly recommended.

Jo from Australia
As Mr. Hobsons girlfriend I find it offencive that someone tried to use me to degrade his name. Tony researched this book for over 2 years. As a person that never knew anything about lanterns I found this book very informative. It was clearly written with pictures that made it very easy to identify lanterns in ones possession. Well done Tony.

Great Book
IM the type of person that gets turned off with religous talk but The author handles the subject matter uniquely taking a different approach on old debates, i guess just more of a realistic approach in a fiction novel. This gives me a respect for the author and i am now curious about the next book.

best book i've read all year
i really enjoyed this book. once i started reading it i thought it would be boring but once i got to about the tenth page or second chapter i didn't want to put it down. i first gave the book to my father (pastor) to read and he told me that he usually does not read fiction but this book is good and he wants me to buy 6 more books for family and friends as well as one for himself.

my favorite parts are when the angles are takling to each other. i've have heard about guardian angels, demons and spiritual warfare before and have always been intrigued buy them but never knew how to follow up on it

i also like the way the author deals with homosexuality and the healing power of prayer.
all in all this book helped to stregnthen my spiritual walk with Jesus

Excellent Book for Exam Revision
I have just spent the last month revising for my medical exams and have found Bray et al an indespensible component of my study regime. The book presents complex topics in a simple understandable format. I would not hesitate to recommend it to any of my fellow students. It gets a double thumbs up from me!!

Forget the rest, Bray is the best.
Bray et.al is the best physiology text avaliable today. This text clearly presents a range of physiological topics and is well written by the learned staff of the Otago University Physiology Dept. Prof. Bray is to be commended for his concise and accurate editorial style. I found the figures particularly understandable and loved thier minimalistic style. A MUST for every med student and those interested in how the body functions. I look forward to the next edition.

Renaissance Italy
I am not related to Leon Battista Alberti...but I thought I would do a review of this book for the simple reason, I have read it.

An indepth look at both a Renaissance man and his times. The balance of information and readability for the less than committed scholar, gives this biography a wide range of appeal. If you like Italian history, especially of the Renaissance with a bit psychological and social analysis, you'll find it here.

The chapters are divided up into different interests, but you can skip around easily. Overall a very readable approach to a biography that covers quite a bit of academic insight.

A review by a decendant
My surname is Alberti (52 years old), I am a direct decendant of Leon Battista Alberti (1404-72). It was a very personal experience to read Mr. Graftons book. How often in this fast paced world do we forget our roots and our heritage. Since my father is still living there are 4 generations of Alberti's all residing in the United States. I appreciated Mr. Graftons style of brining to life the man behind the ledgend. Thank you Mr. Grafton, you have added much to the completion of the history of my family and ancestory.

Letter Sounds: Phocis for Beginners
I can't say enough about this tape and book! I started playing this tape for my son when he was about 2. He loved it. Everytime we drove in the car, he wanted to hear it. It's got a fun beat (easy for parents to listen to!) and a great book with lots of color. In fact, I had to order extra books, because his friends wanted to have their own when they were in the car. My son turned 6 in December. He began sounding out words when he was 4, and was reading words on his own by 4 1/2. Now he's way beyond any of his peers, reading at the 3rd grade, 8th month level. His spelling is also exceptional. I truely believe I owe it to his early introduction to this book!

Fast and Easy Phonics
I purchased Rock 'N Learn Letter Sounds for my two year old daughter. She loved following along in the work book to the very catchy songs. There are many colorful pictures to hold her interest. Also, it has a quick pace to keep her interested, but not too fast for her to keep up. She learned her letters and all their sounds before she turned three. We are now moving on to side two of the tape that teaches her to read whole words. I went to a local teacher supply store and asked for a recommendation for teaching early phonics. They told me this was the best out there. I agree. Furthermore, the music is actually pretty good so it doesn't drive parents crazy.

Letters to Khatami: A Reply to the Iranian President's Call for a Dialogue Among Civilizations
Published in Paperback by Wyndham Hall Press (01 July, 2001)
Author: Anthony J. Dennis
Amazon base price: $24.00
Average review score:

The sleeper of the turn of the century
The essays in this book are valuable for many different reasons. They speak to the conflict (clash?) between Islamic civilization and Western civilization and more particularly between the Islamic Republic of Iran (that great sponsor of world terrorism) and the United States. They also address human rights, women's rights, the rights of religous minorities inside Iran and so on. There are also some never before revealed nuggets from the former U.S. Ambassador who was held hostage inside Iran between 1979-81. He reveals a never before reported incident as he was boarding the plane to leave Tehran after being held hostage for 444 days. This would make for a complete collection but the collection of letters and essays is even more amazing because it contains an essay by Anthony Dennis which not only addresses in illuminating detail the writings and political thought of the reformist Iranian President Mohammad Khatami but also provides an historical view by someone living at the end of the 20th century of American civilization. I think this book and Dennis's impressive essay will become historically significant in future centuries when historians and American studies experts look back on how a prominent American citizen viewed his own civilization and its role in the world at the end of the 20th century.

Letters to Khatami: A Reply to the Iranian President's Call
This is an insightful and interesting read as well as an impassioned called for reform for a county that practices brutality and terrorism. The letters that appear in this book provide great solace and inspiration for anyone who is concerned with human rights and personal freedom. Lets hope that President Khatami and other rulers of the oppressed take the message of this book seriously.
