The Secret Life of Children's Art
Always I like being around when children draw. So authors Anthony I Geist and Peter N Carroll get my attention right away when they say that children's art tells us what children go through and see. The examples in THEY STILL DRAW PICTURES show what children zero in on from going through war, from the Spanish civil war of the 1930s, to the Holocaust of the 1930s-1940s, to the Kosovo bloodbath of the 1990s.

All too often what affects children becomes common knowledge, only by way of adults drawing, talking and writing. Yet respected artist, biographer, historian and psychoanalyst Erik H Erikson says that how children feel and think is there for anyone to see in their art. Just look at what the body parts and faces are doing, what colors are used, what things fill up the spaces.

An especially chilling example are children's drawings of German bombers destroying the Spanish Basque city of Guernica. Experts know the exact models being flown, just from children's drawings!

In fact, children's wartime art always tells the same story in the same way. First there's life before the war, such as at a grandmother's house or with a family dog savoring a bone. Next come the war scenes, such as of a soldier whipping a man lashed to a tree. Then there's evacuation, such as of a roadside full of tiny stick figures. And then there's the life in refugee camps, such as of the children playing outside a building while smoke billows from the chimney or of the colony dining room. Finally there's life after the war, such as of a 10-year old girl sitting in the grass, with open book in hand.

The book is clearly organized and interestingly written. It reads well with Ismail Kadare's CHRONICLE IN STONE. It shows well with two videos, JEUX INTERDITS and HOPE AND GLORY.

Things Irish
I bought this book to prepare for my first trip to Ireland and it saved me. It covered everything from what to expect from the locals to the appropriate time to wait before drinking a freshly poured pint. Thank you. I bought a lot of books and this is the only I needed.

The Thousand Dollar Yacht
Published in Hardcover by Seafarer Books (January, 1996)
Author: Anthony Bailey
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

The essence of small boat sailing in tidal waters
When a thousand dollars will buy just a few tens of pounds of most modern yachts, people who love to sail but whose wallets are of shoal depth are generally left on the beach. "The Thousand Dollar Yacht" is a message in a bottle for them, saying help is on the way. Especially if the reader is a young man or woman at the beginning of a career and with young children, a mortgage and all the rest of it making a formidable barrier to owning a boat. Bailey, a former New Yorker writer and avid small boat sailor, wrote this classic in the 1960's. Admittedly, the price of his yacht, if built today, would be a bit higher, but perhaps not in real dollars. Peter Tripp, a retired master mariner, marine draftsman and an artist with a perfect eye for a sweet sheerline, illustrated the book. It belongs on a sailer's shelf right alongside "Riddle of the Sands", and Joshua Slocum.

The three clerks

9 to 5 Victorian Style
Trollope covers broad range of life in this wonderfully amusing tale of three very diverse clerks and the career paths they take in Victorian England. He depicts them with depth and sympathy and you can't help feeling sorry for the plights their own follies bring upon them. Trollope knew the life he wrote about from his own eventful and long remembered career as a postal worker! Romance and vivid scene painting combine with social comentary to make Three Clerks a classic worth reading for pleasure as well as for the cultural history education it offers.

A true storyteller
Anyone who attended Holy Cross or has an attachment to the College in one way or another will love this book. It provides an excellent opportunity to learn and reminisce at the same time. Father Kuzniewski's exhaustive research is well evident in this fact-filled history. I found myself quickly becoming engrossed, and particularly enjoyed the sections which discussed the motivation behind the founding of the College and the beginning of coeducation. A volume every alum should have.

My Almost 3-year-old loves it!
We've borrowed it from the library twice already and it is his favorite! The tiger goes through quite a bit to get his stripes back, and my son knows the story by heart. I think it's time to buy him his own copy so other kids can borrow it too!

The finest English language catalogue of chronometers!
Anthony Randall's lucid descriptions and technical knowledge are fully displayed and supported wonderfully by David Penney's flawless line drawings and the photographic talents of others.

This book is a must for the collector and horological historian as well as all watchmakers who are serious about their craft.

Not only a brilliantly executed book; it is one of greatest tools and resources in my workshop. The Time Museum Catalogue of Chronometers is, quite easily, the finest representation of precision timekeepers available in the English language.
