If you want a natural-looking pond or stream . . .
Don't waste money on multiple lesser books. Buy this one! You won't regret it. Especially if you want a natural look, such as plants to the edge of the water or easing into the water. This is my key reference for constructing my water garden. Excellent construction techniques for natural edges - no necklace of rocks - and stream flow and finishing to mimic natural creeks and streams. Very inspirational photos of water features that will surprise you that they are man-made, and sized for average gardens as well as larger acreages. Line drawings detail construction techniques showing placement of liner, underlayment and structural (concrete) support for heavy rocks, etc. Several options shown for each. Written such that homeowner could do it themselves. Only caveat is that the designs are based in Britain and may (or may not) need adjustment for severe winter regions. Although primarily a construction guide, excellent photos of completed gardens provide inspiration for plantings. There is a brief review of major species adapted to this sort of garden. I am looking forward to the new edition, due out in Fall 2002, which promises inclusion of some U.S. information. Don't accept less. Raise your expectations of what your water feature can look like. Ibuse deserves greater renown if only for this & Castaways!
This set of short novels reads more like the adventures of Ged the Archmage in Ursula K. LeGuin's Earthsea series than what can usually be expected from Japanese novels. Ibuse's storytelling skills should be able to stand tall among the ranks of Ryonosuke Akutagawa

Excellent Book
As a long-time reader of spirituality, I found this book to be up there with the best available. The author approaches Divinity as something that exists beyond all creeds and dogmas, as something that permeates all being and is too large to be bound within any one system of approach. It gives the solid reality that this mystery is to be embraced and lived within the daily life. I found the book to be well-written, easily understandable and beautiful in its context. I would recommend it to anyone that has the remotest interest in making the world a better place to live, or has set out on a spiritual quest of gaining personal understanding of the mystery that surrounds their being..

Those who knew De Mello give insight into the great man.
This little book is a collection of stories and anecdotes about Anthony De Mello and his life. It is full of great wisdom and gives some illumination in a biographical sense. If you have read anything else by this great teacher, you will appreciate this. It gives insight into an authentic heart that expressed itself fearlessly.

A Book For the Specialist Only Not for the General Reader
I will not repeat what is in the precis above. This book is extemely detailed. This work will not have any reason to be repeated. What is in here,is of interest to the specialist in weapons development and the collector, supposing that such items still exist. If you want the experience of the trenches, then get Eye Deep in Hell (c.f.) This details every patent and effort to make hand grenades, for example, safe for the thrower, and lethal for the target, that the British made. The same is true for flame throwers, light mortars, catapults, and gas projectors. Again, this is not light reading and covers crew served weapons other than firearms and grenades. I bought it hoping there was something on trench cutlery in it. Nada. But I still found it well written enough to read all of it. But I will probably never open it again unless I find a photo I need to interpret. The general reader is referred to any of Ian Hogg's works. They are comprehensive, well-written, and have just enough detail for the specialist and not too much to bore the general reader.

Very interesting!
Having been born and raised in West Roxbury, Massachusetts, I found this book quite interesting. It's fun to look at the historic pictures of what my neighborhood looked like when it was just a town.

It also explains how West Roxbury got that name. Many people mistakenly believe that West Roxbury is the western side of Roxbury, but it is not. West Roxbury is separated from Roxbury by Jamaica Plain and Roslindale, and borders Dedham, Newton, Brookline, and Roslindale. This book explains that back in the 17th century, Roxbury, Jamaica Plain, Roslindale, and West Roxbury were all Roxbury. To make a long story short, they were eventually divided up into different neighborhoods. Today's modern West Roxbury is actually at the western tip of what used to be Roxbury in the 17th century. This explains why the oldest school in the country, Roxbury Latin (which is located in West Roxbury), has that name.

West Roxbury has the look and feel of a suburb, but it is actually a neighborhood in the city of Boston. It is very Irish, and some refer to it as the "lace curtain Irish section of Boston."

Put this book on the PHILOSOPHY and RELIGION shelves too!
Re-reading this book, after a 10-year study of Jungian Psychology, made it clear to me that C.G. Jung is a Philosopher's Philosopher. At the back of this book is Jung's public view of GOD and Religion, and he informs us of the psychic error and impertinence of making a "Hypostasis" (as in Plato's 'Ideal'), and he defers to the sacredness of the "Individual Psyche" versus the "Collective Psyche". Jung is clearly "Aristotlean" here. This is opposite many peoples' conception/use of Jung (e.g., my edition of Random House Encyclopedia discounted Jung's ideas as examples of "Idealist" Philosophy with Archetypes, et al)!

Jung believed there is genuine value and meaning in neuroses and even madness; but, now, the credibility of all Philosphers must now be viewed in terms of their respective healthy or unhealthy Psyches! Most importantly, many Western Philosophers [mostly since Descartes] show a severe mind-body thinking-feeling split; and, this is different in Eastern Philosophy and Western Religions. Jung's words have great significance for Eastern and Western Philosopy and World Religions in the coming Millennium! Bennet's contribution serves to protect us from distortions of Jung so commonly found in name-dropping derivative works.

The third masterpiece in Cross's 'Eternal Guardians' series
The Fourth Guardian was a wonderfully captivating thriller. The Lost Guardian: an epic novel, marvelous in both its scope and execution. The third book in this series is entirely different. It is raw and ruthless; it takes no prisoners. It takes no stock in anyone's hangups, pretensions or prejudices. And it blasts them to pieces. It is a groundbreaking work full of chaos and it always gives you what you least expect. Read it. You'll never be the same. I think that's good. Wow.
