Bold & Fun
This is an innovative book in an innovative format. The poems are eclectic in range and purpose as Swift displays his formal prowess in some, and his futuristic verve in others. Some of the best pieces in this collection sound like they have been transmitted through a time-weary transistor radio from someplace far in the decadent future. Great poetry, and beautiful electronic design.

Elgar's Third Symphony: The Story of the Reconstruction

The author tells how he produced Elgar/Payne Symphony No. 3.
When Edward Elgar died in 1934, he left behind 130 pages of sketches for his uncompleted Third Symphony. In the 65 years since, musicologists have often disagreed about the musical value of the sketches. Did they show Elgar breaking new ground as a composer, or were they merely a reworking of old themes in ways that showed Elgar in decline?

At the request of Elgar's heirs, British composer Anthony Payne has produced an "elaboration" of Elgar's final musical thoughts. This is not a "completion" of the work; only Elgar could have done that. It is a way of presenting Elgar's ideas in full orchestral dress, while also adding some developmental and transitional passages that were missing from the sketches.

The resulting work, "Elgar/Payne Symphony No. 3," was a great success when it was premiered in the UK and released on CD early in 1998. The work received its US premiere in Philadelphia in November of 1998 and will be performed during 1999 in New York, Washington and Chicago. More than 60 other performances have been scheduled around the world.

In this book, Payne describes how he fell in love with this music and worked with it over a period of years to create a finished work. This is essential reading for Elgarians, but it will also fascinate anyone who has ever wanted to look over a composer's shoulder and see how a symphonic composition is created.

So much insight for so little assumed background
Usually the Princeton Notes are written for specialists in the field. This book by Knapp is a definite exception. The didactic quality is excellent, and the background assumed of the reader is meager compared to what you can take away by reading this book. The reader is only assumed to have an undergraduate background in complex analysis and modern algebra...not bad considering the frontiers that Knapp reaches in this book. The Eichler-Shimura thoery is treated in the next to last chapter of the book, and at a very understandable level. After reading the book one takes away an understanding of many deep results in the theory of elliptic curves. The author gives the reader a rare gift for most modern mathematical texts: insight. Proofs are given for most of the results, but the main emphasis is on understanding how elliptic curves are studied and why they are useful mathematical objects. This is definitely a book to be read by everyone interested in the theory of elliptic curves. String theorists, cryptoanalysts, physicists, and aspiring mathematicians whose interests and applications are in the theory of elliptic curves should definitely read this book. A mere $50.00 will get you a copy...but it is definitely worth four times that. If you are coming to the theory of elliptic curves for the first time and have a background in comnplex analysis and modern algebra, read first Joseph Silverman's book on rational points on elliptic curves, and then Knapp's book. Then move on to Silverman's two books on the arithmetic of elliptic curves. For both theory and applications, this sequence should prepare anyone for entering this very interesting world of elliptic curves. If only more books in modern mathematics were written like Knapp's Elliptic Curves...............

THIS BOOK ROCKS!!!!!
Once about every hundred years comes a work so brilliant, so elaborately and magnificently crafted, so stunningly insightful that it inspires in the reader a sense of marvel and wonder rivalled only by Johnson's 'Impromput Appendectomy.' This work is Adams' 'Emergency Anesthesia.' Adams truly forges in the smithy of his soul the uncreated conscience of his race.

More than one thousand meticulously researched entries
Anthony Bruce and William Cogar have collaborated to produce a superbly researched and presented military history with An Encyclopedia Of Naval History. Comprising more than one thousand meticulously researched entries arranged alphabetically, readers will find entries for major wars (including detailed chronologies of attendant naval engagements and for smaller naval battles); histories of individual ships and the progression of warship technology from the 16th through the 20th centuries (including design modifications of strategic significance, ship dimensions, and weaponry); biographies of naval commanders ranging from Barbarossa and Horatio Nelson to Chuichi Nagumo and Huyman George Rickover; descriptions of the development of navies, naval organizations, and naval tactics; as ell as suggested further readings, extensive cross-references, a synoptic index, a general index, 124 illustrations, and more. An Encyclopedia Of Naval History is a core, seminal addition to any military history collection in general, and naval warfare reference libraries in particular.

Encyclopedia of Political Economy

A great general resource for the social sciences
This is a great general resource for people, and especially students, interested in the social sciences. The area of Political Economy defines a broad subject matter incorporating economics, political science, sociology and History (at least), from a leftist point of view. There are excellent essays on topics relating to each of these areas that have helped me understand, at long last, those college classes I took oh, so long ago. I wrote the essay on the Informal Sector, but there are over 300 other essays that are really worth looking at. Each essay has a short list of publications in the field that can help jump-start a more in-depth research project.

Another Stunning Work By Mr. Burgess
I was lucky enough to stumble upon this book in a used book store during a class field trip. Familiar or not with Anthony Burgess, this book follows in the string of greatness. The three individual stories complement each other in many interesting ways, with a biography, a musical, and life in the future. The development of the book is absolutely amazing.
