A complete overview of 20th century political thought
Nearly all political theories relevant to the 20th century are covered: from Marxism/Leninism to Classical Liberalism and Islmaic Fundamentalism. This is an excellent book to use as a guide when discussing past or present political thought as well as the potential impact each will have in the next century.

Interesting and Useful
This is the best work in English for humor in the late Roman republic, and Corbeill writes with insight, sensitivity, and excellent handling of the sources. My only complaint (and it is a small one) would be that Corbeill makes no attempt to distinguish between humor, invective, the laughable, the ridiculous, and so on. The conflation of these terms is a weakness, because I think there is a genuine difference between humor and invective, the latter of which Corbeill discusses at length. The book is still very good, and I would recommend it to those interested in Roman history and literature, or to anyone researching humor and theories of the laughable.

Steamy Love.....
....From Pasta that is! This is a great cookbook from quite a scamp of a chef, Francis Anthony. I have seen him on a morning show several times & decided to get his book. There are over 200 recipes ranging from plain pasta (how can pasta ever be plain?) to more inricate dishes using veal and freshly made linguine.
Our family appreciates the kid section. Fun meatballs and ideas that'll make 'em manga~manga-manga. The Love Chefs approach is simple, direct, easy to follow and sometimes humorous. I like the bright red cover--a real standout of sinfully good eating.

Daniels to Dalrymple, whutta freakin odyssey
There have been those who have complained (Booklist) that this first Anthony Daniels travel journal is "unpleasant." To borrow a phrase from Raymond Chandler, the idea seems to be that if Anthony Daniels was writing about a whorehouse, he would depict only the pail of slops at the back door. But this is just liberal nonsense. In the first place, Anthony Daniels circa 1988 is a long way from Theodore Dalrymple circa, like, now. The youthful A.D. comes across as a hyper-rarefied good time Charlie compared with the sober reflections of Theodore Dalrymple's ripened misanthropy. If I had a criticism to make of this first A.D. book it would be that the writing is far too philanthropic and permissive. Reviewers who think that Daniels' writing is too negativistic have either not spent time in the third world, or are the type of incurable liberals that cannot see the filth and degradation that is staring them in the face. They cannot see it because of their own degradation.

Cracking the wall of segregation in Little Rock in 1957
We have all seen the pictures of the teenage black students walking through the rows of U.S. Army soldiers as they entered the all-white Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. In "Cracking the Wall; The Struggles of the Little Rock Nine," Eileen Lucas tells the story behind those famous pictures. Illustrated by Mark Anthony, this book not only tells us the names of these nine students but takes us inside the school so we can find out what happened when the cameras were not around. While these students were allowed to attend Central, despite the wishes of the Governor Fabus and other segregationists, they were not allowed to participate in any activities. Young readers will learn how the governor used National Guardsmen to keep the blacks from attending class until President Eisenhower sent different soldiers to ensure the law was obeyed. In an Afterword, Lucas explains what happened after the soldiers left and how Fabus actually closed all the public high schools in Arkansas rather than let black and white students be together. Today we look back on these events and cannot believe adults could be such idiots, but then prejudice is not exactly textbook rational thinking. Students will find this story fascinating, although I would imagine they would have a hard time imagining what it was really like for these nine brave students. As Lucas reminds her young readers, while "The Little Rock Nine helped to crack the wall" of segregation, "it is up to each of us to continue to tear down the walls that keep people apart."

A Good Read: Mystery Novel with a New Orleans as a backdop.
A good read, would make a great Noir Film. Doesn't pound you over the head with New Orleans items, just a backdrop, but anyone familar with The City, will get all the locations, food, bars, etc. This was Tony Dunbar's first novel and while the cover(paperback)refers to him as reminiscent of Donald Westlake and Elmore Lenoard; other than some characters that could turn up in either's books, Dunbar has a style of his own style. Makes you anxious to read the next novel in the series.

While there's an introduction, the book's greatest lack is essays and discussions concerning the works and their author (Paul Linebarger, as Smith was his nom de plume). Comparisons of Smith's stories and the myths he took some of them from would be helpful.
Good, but there's work to do in future editions.
