A vey good summary of the best muscle from Chrysler and co..
As always, Anthony Young has done an excellent job in bring all the necessary data, facts and figures about his chosen subject. Nothing new that has not been done before by various other authors like Holder & Kunz, RM Clarke and most of the pictures have been seen before.

However, a worthwhile addition to any collection as it brings the best of all three manufacturers together unto one book and blends Mr Youngs particular style of writing which is clear and informative.

Only lacking in comparison reports and multicar tests..

The Best Book on Mopar Cars

Churchill's Black Dog
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins Publishers (20 July, 1989)
Author: Anthony Storr
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

A fine piece of historical writing
Psycho-history using pschoanalysis as a historical tool often apears on shaky ground. Yet Storr's work is a first rate piece of writing based on scholarly analysis and adds immeasurably to our understanding of churchill and the forces thar drove him on and on. The first essay is the finest but all the others have a solid quality to them. Yet the Churchill essay is the finest. By realising the immense personal challenges he faced, it adds to his reputation. The internal obstacles were often more than the external ones. A fine book that rewards continual rereading.

A Psychiatrist's View of Prominent Individuals
The late Anthony Storr was British. As you read this insightful book, it is good to keep this in mind. He had a neighbor's perspective of Winston Churchill and (although centuries separate their lives) of Isaac Newton. These essays were the most valuable of the entire book. These men were two of the most influential men that the world has ever produced. With the knowledge of their exquisite gifts, emotionally both of these men had to conduct their lives. Churchill's 'black dog' makes us wonder if today he would have been able to hold a powerful public office, with society's fear of mental illness. Storr documents much of Churchill's emotional life and discusses Newton's also, which is very valuable to the reader. This book was written by one of the most prominent psychiatrists of the 20th Century, who in the same vein as the neurologist Oliver Sacks, fortunately decided to expand his career by publishing books.

Classical Music Top 40 : Learn How To Listen To And Appreciate The 40 Most Popular And Important Pieces I

Good reference, easy to follow and understand
Let me begin by explining that I have limited musical experience or training. However I do enjoy classical/syphonic music. This book greatly aided in my appreciation of the 40 pieces of music the author explains. His explanations are thorough and written in plain english. However, he does say to listen for certain instruments that most untrained people would not know. Although limited, I do know something about music so that fact that did not effect me. All in all a good book for those sick of the radio and wanting to expand their music collection. Also, gives great cocktail party knowledge.

For the classical music lover who wants to become a listener
I have been a classical music lover for some years but I knew there was more that I could learn. I was familiar with the general history of the subject and had read a CD collecting guide. However, I wanted to know more about individual pieces of music and how to listen to them instead of just hear them. Then I found this book and it "hit the spot." The author gives the reader/listener a guided tour through forty pieces of classical music. Whether they are actually the "most popular and important" pieces is questionable, especially as to Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra, but they are all wonderful works. Most are instrumental, but the book includes Handel's Messiah and Orff's Carmina Burana. They also have the benefit of spanning the spectrum of styles from baroque to modern. The pieces are arranged alphabetically, but I suggest starting with the programmatic pieces such as Smetana's Moldau, Berlioz's Symphonie Fantastique and Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition, and moving toward the more abstract stuff such as Beethoven's Fifth, Brahm's First and Mahler's First. In order to follow the action as closely as possible you will need to have a watch you can reset, or to sit next to the CD player with the machine set to show time elapsed. The book provided two revelations. First, the music is full of subtleties of which I was unaware. Second, there are big differences in performances of the same piece. The most obvious difference is in whether repeats are observed or omitted. Highly recommended, and I hope Mr. Rudel will write another covering the next most popular forty.

A Collage of Poetry and Prose
Published in Hardcover by Carlton Press (June, 1996)
Author: Anthony Phillander
Amazon base price: $9.95
Average review score:

Inspiring, creative, robust, fresh - a change from the usual
Phillander uses his creativity in a way which draws the reader in, and allows them to experience the emotions the writer must have felt whilst putting pen to paper. Refreshing, a Raw Canadian talent with a uniquely Trinidadian flavour.

inspiring, uplifting
Mr. Phillander writes literature the way one would imagine "the wise old man" would impart his wisdom - a lulling, non confrontational, common-sense approach. His uplifting approach is an inspiration boost in a world gone mad. Definitely a rising star. I found there too be much truth in his words, as well as the meaning behind the words. I'm going to watch for more from this one

The complete idiot's guide to bridge
Published in Digital by Alpha ()
Author: Anthony Medley
Amazon base price: $16.95
Average review score:

Great for Beginners or Intermediate Players
This book was incredibly helpful! I've been playing bridge for years but always felt a bit shaky on my bidding. 3/4 of this book is what, how, why, and when to bid. The author goes through each part of the game step by step. I found myself comfortably implementing these strategies almost immediately. Easy to read, enjoyable anecdotes. Will teach beginners the basics and give intermediate players a leg up on their game.

An excellent introduction to all aspects of bridge
In spite of the title, this book provides the information you need to understand how to play bridge, not just a list of recommendations to be learned by rote. The author starts at the beginning -- how to play, goals of the game, how to score -- but he does not waste time on the fundamentals. He continues by explaining how to bid, providing rational and easy-to-understand logic so that the reader understands what is happening, both how to bid and how to deduce as much information as possible from others' bids. This explanation is provided in a logical sequence which matches the bidding in a typical game. After explaining how to bid, there are hints on how to play the hand.

Although pitched at the beginning player, the explanations are quite complete and the author covers several advanced techniques. There's plenty in this book to enable a new bridge player to have the confidence to not look like an idiot while playing with experienced players.

Strongly protagonist-centric scifi suspense
This book came highly recommended to me from an extremely literate friend. It was my first experience with a Patricia Anthony book, but I'm fairly well read in science fiction overall.

If you're looking for some good ol' comfy sci-fi reading with a couple big plot twists to spice up the read, this book is a great place to start - at 240 pages, it's a quick read. Also, like all (well, most) good science fiction, this story rightly focuses on the unfolding human drama (in the context of new technologies) and one of the main devices used to keep you on the edge of your seat is the strongly protagonist-centric view of the world. A tangled weave of interplanetary political intrigue, religion, sexuality, and J. Edgar Hoover style police state paranoia add a lot of texture to the story.

Likes:
- Holloway's (the protagonist) inner tragedy, while overly analytical, rang true from a basic emotional standpoint.
- Anthony's rendition of an emotionally unbalanced man's view of love and sex shows an refreshingly perspicacious view.

Dislikes:
- The book tries to accomplish an awful lot in 240 pages. The reader gets just a brush with the texture alluded to above. For example, the Beagle, an artifically created personality construct, could have been developed more. Compare cf. the constructs in "Nature's End" by Strieber and Kunetka.
- For me, this book was uncomfortably similar to "Caves of Steel" by Asimov. Earth in political turmoil with an advanced off-Earth human colony? A sci-fi detective story? A government dictated artificial economic stratification of society with overpopulation of Earth? Constructs vs. robots?

Takeaway: it keeps you in suspense, it's got some very interesting plot twists, you won't be sorry you read it, but it won't change your life either (rather, it didn't change mine).

Sit Beagle. Sit. Now stay.
Chapter One. Break out the Likastones.

This book was originally out in hard cover and may still be available from First Books.

Beagle is a nifty police procedural set against an alien backdrop. Holloway is haunted and sad. Beagle - an enigma to all but himself. Who killed Holloway's wife? What force is behind the revolution on Tennyson? The answer is linked in the mind of a dead detective bound to the body of an android. But Beagle may have ghosts of his own to contend with.

One of Anthony's best. Check it out.

An Economic Theory of Democracy

Good as a starting point
Downs is the seminal piece in rat choice voting behavior - and for good reason. A clear understanding of the Downs theories of voting ties together many strands of work and allows for a good framework for scholars who follow him.

The book is a must read for political scientists and for anyone who wants to understand the voting literature.

A Good Beginning
Down's Economic Theory of Democracy is an easy to read introdution to the basics of voting theory. It is accessible to the casual reader as well as the hardcore acedemic. It's take on the electoral competition have become staples of high school civis as well as acedemic political theory.

Down's most famous innovation is the result that two party competition leads to both parties offering the same platform in order to maximise votes.

0-----25-----50-----75----100 ----------Rep--Dem-----------

This formulation is actually the Hotelling spatial competition model applied to elections. (I thought the economists may be interested!) Morover it froms the basis fro the median voter theorem.

The little bear magic.
Great book to little children. The important thing is that it uses few sentences and let the kid to told and retold the storie focusing on the richness of the drawings, and common knowledge of the stories that cross in the litle bear path. I truly recommend it.

Another hilarious book about Osito
This book is sort of the nicer twin to the book "Un Cuento de Oso" by the same author. In "Cuento," Osito goes through the forest encountering threatening things and uses his trusty pencil to draw his way out of danger. In this book, Osito is walking in the jungle and encounters potentially scary animals (gorilla, crocodile, lion, elephant) and draws things to make them happy. While "Cuento" is a little subversive, "Libro" is just plain fun. The drawings are rich and hilarious, and the ending is cute.

My only complaint is that I thought this book would be a board book, and it's not. It's hardback, but with paper pages, so I'm worried that my 11-month-old will destroy it. But he loves it already, so I don't have the heart to put it on the shelf until he's older.

Entertaining Mathematical Problems by Martin Gardner is a great book for all ages. This book has over 100 problems in sections ranging from topology to games. Some of the problems are simple to many, but there are some that require thought to do. Answers are included on the back. Any math lover will surely enjoy this book.

A WAY TO GET WARMED UP FOR THE THINKING WORLD
I give this book five stars. Though the problems and puzzles were created several years ago, it introduces or, at least, reintroduces the reader to humorous and thought-provoking examples highlighting how intuitive and counterintuitive processes can collide into one another.

Martin Gardner's witty writing style makes this book a pleasant pathway to the realms of logic. Neat and concise with its stories and challenges throughout and with solutions at the very end, the book is a very ideal read, especially if you are a passenger with a very long trip ahead and who needs good quality entertainment that is also educational.

The Essential Internet: A Guide for Psychotherapists and Other Mental Health Professionals (Developments in Clinical Psychiatry)

what do you think is the best way to use the Internet?
the more time subjects spent online, the more depressed and lonely they tended to be. The report concluded that one hour a week of Internet use led to an average increase of 1% on the depression scale and 0.04% on the loneliness scale. Researchers think time spent on the Internet may be deducted from contact with real people. Participants in a study reported a decline in interaction with family members and a reduction in numbers of friends. No matter how heartfelt, e-mail, chat rooms, and newsgroups have an ephemeral quality compared to real human relationships. How does Internet communication affect mental health? Why? In terms of mental health, what do you think is the best way to use the Internet?

A superb resource for mental health providers
This in clearly the best book available about the Internet for mental health professionals. The author explains the workings of cyberspace in clear and accessible English that even the most computer-illiterate will be able to understand. He also provides an invaluable list of resources specifically tailored to mental health. Excellent job! Bravo!
