It truly is an enjoyable read, and will make you an expert on the subject at hand. Get it, read it, and use the knowledge wisely. It makes a great gift for those avid readers in the family, don't let the title fool you, this is a great book.

This book is a phenomenal opportunity to visit the best museum without ever leaving your couch. My family loves to relax on a cold day cuddled around the beautiful pages. No sore or tired feet and we can enjoy Renoir.

I am a soldier in the U.S. Army stationed in Kosovo for 6 months. I bought this book to try and identify any reptiles that I might encounter while serving my tour. I could not have made a better choice. The book covers all of Europe west of the Ural Mountains (including Ireland). It lists all amphibians and reptiles withing that range. The keys are very well written, and the corresponding line drawings are exellent. The book also covers many of the variations that occur withing the European lizards. I would recomend this book for the above reasons, over any book that only covers western Europe/Britain because this book also covers easter Europe, which is becoming more and more open to the west every year. This book could be a very big help to any herpetologist who is planing on travel anywhere in Europe, especially on the identification of the lacertids.

Since 1978 herp loving Europe has been waiting for an update of the Collin's Field Guide. Finally, about 50 'new' species are added to this comprehensive guide. My old guide with intensive markings was getting a bit chaotic to read...
As the first (1978) one, this guide is thé book to purchase for herp hunting all over Europe and (in contrast to the 1978 edition) beyond (non European Greek islands, Canary's, ...).
Again the superb illustrations by Ovenden add even more scientific en estethic value to the book.
