A worthy survey of a variety of topics.
Written before discovery of the ozone-hole, and before emergence of the greenhouse effect in the popular consciousness, this book largely concerns itself with problems of desertification, deforestation, and overfishing. That's not all. There are some gems among the chapters, particularly those written by E.P. Odum, and his brother H.T. Odum. These two have written extensively in separate volumes and have consequently advanced ecological theory further than other authors; the parsimoniuos reader may wish to select one of those works instead. But this book also includes contributions by David J. Rapport and others. The broad coverage provides such a good introduction to a variety of topics and curious students will no doubt find several vignettes to pursue further.

Elements of the History of Mathematics
Published in Hardcover by Springer Verlag (September, 1994)
Authors: Nicholas Bourbaki, John Meldrum, and Nicolas Bourbaki
Amazon base price: $62.95
Average review score:

Good source, but rather incomplete.
I really expected more from such a title and such an author (group of authors as a matter of fact). The book does not cover the history of all important branches of modern mathematics, and those included are not treated in a complete manner. Their major lacks occur in 20th century mathematics. There's a lot of topics and names missing, for example: algebraic geometry, coding theory, dynamical systems, harmonic analysis, complex analysis, multidimensional complex analysis, hypercomplex analysis, approximation theory,... ; Samuel Eilenberg, Norman Steenrod, Salomon Lefschetz, Elias Stein, Alberto Calderón, Peter Lax, Abraham Besicovitch, Michael Atiyah, Wendell Fleming, Witold Hurewicz...

Eventhough the Bourbaki group has made a great effort to synthesize and standarize a lot of branches of modern mathematics the actual product of their work (the Elements of Mathematics, the Fascicules of Results, etc.) may well become obsolete and forgotten because of their limited perspective. Nevertheless, the book contains some useful data that will prove valuable to those interested in mathematics' history, above all, the first essay on the foundations of mathematics.

Contents: Foundations of Mathematics, Logic, Set Theory; Notation, Combinatorial Analysis; The Evolution of Algebra; Linear Algebra and Multilinear Algebra; Polynomials and Commutative Fields; Divisibility, Ordered Fields; Commutative Algebra, Algebraic Number Theory; Non-Commutative Algebra; Quadratic Forms, Elementary Geometry; Topological Spaces; Uniform Spaces; Real Numbers; Exponentials and Logarithms; n-Dimensional Spaces; Complex Numbers, Measurement of Angles; Metric Spaces; Infinitesimal Calculus; Asymptotic Expansions; The Gamma Function; Function Spaces; Topological Vector Spaces; Integration in Locally Compact Spaces; Haar Measure, Convolution; Integration in Non-Locally Compact Spaces; Lie Groups and Lie Algebras; Groups Generated by Reflections; Root Systems.

Extensive references (not common in Bourbaki writings); nice softbound.

The Elephant Book
My two year old loves this book even though it's very basic. It's more entertaining than factual, however. There are references to elephant's friends, hippo and rhino, as if they frolic together. But for an elephant lover, it has some nice illustrations to look at.

Disappointing
If you are looking to own only one guide to London's restaurants this is not it. This guide is a compilation of what probably is the author's favourit restaurants in London in alphabetical order without any mention of cuisine type. You have to deduce that by either analysing the name of the restaurant or by reading into each and every article which more often than not says very little. Furthermore many excellent restaurants have been neglected which lets you wonder about the criteria the author used in preparing his guide. Other essential information such as price range, address, working hours, even mobile phones and cigars is adequately covered. As for dress code, this is one area the author attempts failingly to express with refined wit. Sample dress codes :"Euorotrash or rich American hotel guest", "vaguely Sloany" or "suity or foodie". What do you make of that.

The Sokolov Report
Don't let the lurid cover fool you: the first volume, at least (there are two), of "Gibel' Tsarskoi sem'i" is both interesting and valuable. Volume 1 is the famous (or infamous) Sokolov Report, written in the months following the deaths of Nicholas II and his family. Nikolai Sokolov painstakingly compiled his evidence, speaking with dozens of witnesses and visiting the crime scene. Volume 1 also contains lots of documents relating to their deaths, many of which became available only recently. I found Volume 2 less useful: it contains the memoirs of M. K. Diterikhs and the last two chapters of Pierre Gilliard's book on the imperial family. Diterikhs' work is marred by his anti-semitism (he changes the names of some of the participants in the murder so that they sound "more Jewish") which is both overt and disturbing. And my first language is English, so I find the English translation of Gilliard's book (which was originally published in French) more useful than this Russian translation of the last two chapters. So my summary: get it for the first volume, ignore the second.

An amiable read
Despite the potentially controversial subject matter -- an African-American athlete accused of rape -- Stockley has written another amiable, charming page turner. Lots of Southern atmosphere, agreeable characters, plot twists that are only semi-predictable. If I didn't fly so much, no doubt I would be reading more serious stuff (Proust? Mann? Musil? In my dreams), But there are times when only undemanding fare will do. And Stockley's a reliable fellow when the need arises. You won't read it with fevered excitement, but you won't be sorry you plucked it off the wire racks, either.

Good, but not great, picture of the stars of country
Interesting, at times well written account of the current real names in country music. Honest and truthful description of some well-known heroes: Monroe, Stanley (I didn't know Carter drank himself to death!), Cash and Haggard. Although, the map on the overleaf is incorrect which makes me wonder if some of the text isn't as well (Rosine is southwest of Louisville, not southeast). Also, he doesn't talk about Bob Wills or any of the Western Swing genre, except for a quick (sensational) reference to Spade Cooleys murderin' his wife (although I thought he stabbed her, not kicked her to death, as the author indicates).

Kazaam was one of the best books I have read.
I liked the book Kazaam it made me think of what I would do if I had a genie of my own. It was also very neat how almost all of the book took place at a club called the music box. If I had a genie I would have wished for something better than a master CD of his dads concert. I would have wished for a lot of money or a really nice house. I liked how the book was written. The author put alot of action into the story and it was never boring. I also dont like books that are very long. This book was about the right length for me to read. I have read other books by this author and I like how he writes. One other thing that I liked about this book was that it had a famous athlete in it. Shaquille O'neal has the main role of Kazaam the genie. I think that this is a good book for anyone to read. I really liked this book and I think that you will too but you have to read it first.
