Staffordshire Bull Terriers
I was very disappointed with this book. So much could have and should have been included, but 3/4 of the publication is taken up by general medical non-information. The breed is a favorite of mine and Anna Katherine Nicholas is a wonderful author, but this book deserves it's very low rating. It's too bad.

a brief diversion
A while back on rec.arts.books, someone asked for any recommendations of authors like P.G. Wodehouse. In the ensuing responses, this thin little volume by Durrell was mentioned. I recognized Durrell's name from my research into travel literature, and thought I'd give his humor a try. These are short stories, told to an unseen chronicler (and fellow diplomat) by an older collegue named Antrobus. The service is foreign, in a generic country name Vulgaria (a cute little dig at snobbish English diplomats). While the language is quite pleasant, and some of the situations quite amusing, what Durrell is missing is that sense of plot known as the conclusion (or, as a character says here, "the pay off"). Durrell tries, but never seems to get it right. I enjoyed it as a brief diversion (the book is less than 90 pages), but doubt I'll be looking for more.

Mostly a picture book with product advertising.
This book is very general with lots of pictures and pushing specific pet products. This isn't the in depth book I was hoping for but after looking in various bookstores and pet shops I was desperate. There is some useful information in the book but I'm still looking for more complete information.

Not the best work on pirates
This book is by far not the best book that I have read on pirates. It is written more for a woman who is feeling bad about her sexuality. The book is an effort to list every woman, fictional and otherwise, that has ever had a role in maritime history. The book starts out by talking about ancient gods (yes, female gods) that related to the sea. This discussion is better saved for a book on mythology because it was a good summary of female gods but it did not pertain to pirates. The book moves on and talks about female pirates through the ages all over the world. While this is somewhat informative I believe that the significance of these woman pirates in history is way overstated. Female pirates were very few and far between, and many really shouldn't be considered pirates. The best part of the book was the discussion of the most netorious women pirates, Mary Read and Anne Bonny. These two chapters were interesting and informative but they were also burried in the book. I would suggest a book that includes but is not limited to woman pirates because the fact is that there were very few woman pirates in history. The last quarter of the book focused on the politics of the Jolly Roger. This section helped to save the book but it often repeated and contradicted the first part of the book. I noticed a few inaccurate statements in this section, but on the whole this section was well done. This book is not a total waste of time, but it gets off topic and overstates things in my opinion. Women have played a huge part in world history, just not as pirates.

Dog book in disguise
I purchased this book wanting information regarding french bulldogs prior to getting a new pet. After meeting with breeders and reading information from them, this book is in no way adequate in informing potential owners of this rare breed. It also cost me a lot more than $4.99, try Australian $29.00, money not well spent. The book is mostly regarding dog care which can be obtained in vast quantities from other sources.

Very little french bulldog content
This book has a few pages on French bulldogs and then is filled with generic dog information...some of which is actually incorrect for Frechies. Save the money...this book isn't worth it.

More Frenchies, s'il vous plait
I was disappointed in this book when finding out that only about the first 1/4 actually contained info specific to French bulldogs; the rest was just generic dog info and worse yet, seemed to be a 'plug' for a brand of dog chew toys. It reeked of being a "dog book" template -- switching out the breed info on a few pages, adding a new cover, some photos, and voila! The reinforced binding may be sturdy, but it makes it very hard to hold or keep open. Best aspects were some adorable Frenchie photos, but even those were outnumbered by cartoonish drawings and photos of other breeds! Sacre bleu!

One of those times you should see the movie instead...
This is one of those books where, rather than the movie being based on the book, the book was based on the movie. Hence there is hardly any literary value to this book, the grammar is written on a 4th grade level, and it's not even scary (being in the horror genre, you'd expect a little more).

It's an alright read if you want to waste a little time, I read this as a kid during a period of 3 hours in boring car trip.

The only positive thing to say about this is, the eight pages of color pictures. You know Mimi Bobek from the Drew Carey Show? One page has a picture from the movie, you can see what she looks like without all that makeup on! It's also nice to see Jeff Daniels' frightened expression on his face on the second-to-last picture where he's going up the staircase running away from all the spiders. 1 star for Katherine Kinney's un-makeuped face and Jeff Daniels' legitimate fright of being around spiders.

But, again, if the color pictures are more amusing than the content of the story in ANY book, the book itself isn't worth buying. Go see the movie if it really matters that much.. ironically, even the movie wasn't all that good (shame on you for producing it, Spielberg!).

Not what it sems to be
The title of this book looks like a good book. But the decriptions of the names are wrong. The writers of the book are not Armenian so thy did not write a acurate book. The decriptions are WRONG. The book says some Armenian names comes from Hebrew and Persis which is not true, infact its the oposite. Dont buy this book it is a Propganda.

Satirical review mainly touching on the style of Assassins.
"Peter Salmon said" By: Peter Salmon

Peter Salmon said, "In Edward Hower's article 'Reviewing books', he explains how he doesn't trash books in his reviews, saying 'Not I. If I can't find at least something to like in a book's first twenty or thirty pages, I send it right back, so another reviewer can try it' (p.26). Unfortunately for me, and any other poor sap who bought Nicholas Mosley's Assassins, we can't just send the book back to the publisher. We bought it for the cover price of $12.95, and say to ourselves, 'Hey...they should've given me $12.95 just for reading the first chapter.' "

Peter Salmon said, "On the book's very first page, a title is given for all the comments from big-time books reviewers, 'Praise for Assassins'. Here they describe this book, 'thoroughly imagined', 'an adroitly organized political thriller', and 'a cocoon of dismay and terror'. It is not these descriptions that I disagree with. In fact the thrilling plot is what counteracts Mosley's childish style. Set in England during the mid-sixties, the daughter of Sir Simon Mann, England's Foreign Secretary, stumbles upon a young assassin. The assassin takes Mann's daughter, who interrupts his deadly plans, and locks her in an abandoned cottage away from her home. When let loose to be part of a grander plot, she hides her fateful knowledge, unaware of everyone's outcome."

Peter Salmon said, "Maybe you are wondering why each paragraph begins with 'Peter Salmon said'. It is my way of satirizing Mosley's monotonous and childlike style. What makes me want to pull my hair out is the fact that every quotation is begun with the word 'said'. I found three instances (and yes I did count) when he did not use 'said'. Along with this, for many characters, he did not give names. He simply regarded them as 'the man with...'. When these two styles are put together on the same page, it is twice as annoying than having just one."

Peter Salmon said, "If you think you may be interested in this book, I beg you to go to a bookstore and read page 52. If you can tolerate Mosley's style for that one page, then you are certainly one of a kind."

Cleverly written but not true.
Nicholas Fitzgerald's biography about the founder and musical genius of The Rolling Stones was certainly a page turner but one has to question the truth to his story. Fitzgerald, a Guiness heir, claimed to have been close friends to Brian Jones during height of Stonesmania in the mid 60's, to his accidental drowning, or should I say murder, in July 1969. For a person who was as close to Brian Jones as Fitzgerald claims, one has to wonder why his name is mentioned in no other books written about the star or books about The Rolling Stones. People who were close to Brian Jones and the Stones during this time such as former lovers Marianne Faithfull, Anita Pallenberg and close personal friends have never mentioned or heard of Fitzgerald. The book was cleverly written but not true.
