Jet Propulsion : A Simple Guide to the Aerodynamic and Thermodynamic Design and Performance of Jet Engines
Published in Paperback by Cambridge University Press (August, 2003)
Author: Nicholas A. Cumpsty
Amazon base price: $35.00

Really helpful
This book keeps up with the promise in the title. It is a easily readable guide to design and perfomance of jet engine with a rigorous treatise of each field, even if the level remains simple.

In fact the mathematical exposition is quite accessible, without a full analytical presentation. Nevertheless the formulae are clearly given with an effective theorical background when needed. Since the volume target is to clarify ideas and principles, each topic is attractively examined, emphasizing the qualitative treatment over the quantitative analysis to improve understanding of physical phenomena. This facet is quite useful because it allows an overall comprehension in mastering design process of jet engine. Besides, the emphasis on having a clear picture of principles provides the basis for a fair evaluation of engine perfomances under real conditions.

As a guide or a reference, this work has neatly achived its goal.

Jet Propulsion
hey, how are you? I don't know what I must suppose to write here, but I'm so happy to do this.

A RARE FIND
THE JEWELS OF THE DUCHESS OF WINDSOR 1st edition,is a lush vicarious view of the golden age of royalty. The illustrations are breathtaking, done by some of the world's most famous photographers including Lord Snowdon..a marvelous addition to any collection.

A Visually Stunning Masterpiece!
I adore this book! It's an oversize publication which increases the beauty of the photography. The photos of the Duchess'jewelry are breathtaking, and it also provides a full account of the famed auction, including the amounts paid for the jewelry. There are great pictures of celebrities who purchased some of the pieces. There's even a stunning photo of Liz Taylor wearing the Prince of Wales Plume Pin for which she paid over $500,000. It also recounts the story of their lives along with pictures, including copies of newspaper clippings during the abdication. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Duke and Duchess or the forthcoming auction of the Windsor's household possessions at Sothebys. This book is the jewel in my collection of royal books!

Simply the best read
Very simply, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in adventure travel. I picked it up and didn't stop reading until I'd finished the last page.

The next day I read it again.

Brilliant

An amazing journey by bicycle
This book is a must for anyone who likes exciting travel literature. Two cousins decide to undertake a cycling journey to the "Centre of the Earth" - the furthest place on the earth from the sea, which happens to be in a remote part of Western China. Starting at the coast in Bangladesh, they go on a journey which carries them across the Himalayas into China, experiencing almost every kind of weather imaginable. The journey is made even more incredible by the fact that they travel with no support, carrying all their gear. My favourite travel literature book - nothing I've read in the 8 years since I first picked it up gives the same sense of adventure . Mark Ness

A good review of processes in reading
This book is a useful overview of the processes involved in learning to read. It cover comprehension, learning to read, and phonological awareness. This book discusses the different types of reading instruction which is usually shrouded in controversy but this discusses different processes that different teaching methods create, rather than a debate over which reading instruction is better.

Learning to Read: Beyond Phonics and Whole Language
This book breaks down the reading process into the foundational pieces necessary for success. It was a valuable tool in helping the parents, that I work with, understand why I do the things that I do, in my classroom.

Kilims can be a comulsive obsession
If you live in a kilim-close environ, then you can understand how they can become a compulsive obsession. Much the same as book collecting. This richly illustrated volume is a lovely addition to a library, and as well provides good practical information about how kilims in various guises can be used and displayed to their best advantage. The emphasis is on USING and LIVING with kilims, not as works of art or museum pieces. The first chapter is a useful history of the origins of kilims, the second on the materials and techniques used in making them, and the third about recognising and identifying different types of kilims, including motifs and symbols and characteristics of kilims from the main areas of production - Anatolia, The Caucasus, Persia and Afghanistan. After that follows various decorative uses - on floors, walls, and unusual forms. The book finishes with tips on care and repair and listings for those interested in collecting these lovely items.

An imaginative and inspiring book on decorating with kilims.
I found this book to be full of good ideas on how to decorate with kilims. There are many color illustrations of kilims used as wall hangings, tablecloths, etc., as well floor coverings, and detailed descriptions of how to hang and mount kilims. Also, there are quite a few good illustrations showing how easily kilims can complement other types of collectible textiles, folk art, and many styles of furniture from modern to antique. There are other books that give more information about buying, selling and value of kilims. This book is mainly for decorating purposes.

Locke: His Philosophical Thought

Addendum to my previously submitted review
I neglected to mention one thing about this book. Jolley sees himself not just as a student of what Locke said but as if he is in philosophical interaction with Locke and his critics. He presents many common criticisms of Locke and responds to them. He also leaves Locke stranded in places where he really seems to have gotten himself into trouble. This book does a great job not just approaching the issues but also in trying to clarify them in the terms of contemporary philosophers and in defending Locke against the all-too-quick criticisms he often receives.

Excellent survey of Locke's thought for its audience
Nicholas Jolley has produced a great resource for students first encountering Locke or for those who are familiar with Locke but would like to get more into the details of his philosophical views. This book is intended as an introduction to his thought and is directed at advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students. It gives enough details to begin work on any of the diverse topics covered in it, with references to direct the reader elsewhere for further discussion. Unlike most books on Locke by philosophers, this one also includes his political theory and shows its relation to Locke's other views by tying together threads of his thought from one topic to the next. I thoroughly enjoyed working through it in a graduate seminar taught by the author, but I can see that it would be quite valuable just as a resource or as an accompaniment to someone's trying to approach Locke's thought in detail but without much background.

A search for a painting leads to danger and deadly intrigue
Fred Taylor is doing what he does best, wandering amidst the antique shops of Boston searching for a treasure for his employer, wealthy art collector Clayton Reed. In one ye olde shoppe, Fred finds a segment of a pain ting of a squirrel that has been cut out of a larger painting. He thinks that this fragment is part of an important work by Copley, an eighteenth century American artist. Fred buys the piece, hoping to find the rest of the painting. As Fred begins his search, his girl friend Molly is looking into the activities of Dr. Eunice Cover-Hoover, a noted professor who is helping people deal with cults and repressed memories. To learn whether Eunice is a savior or a brilliant con artist, Molly decides she needs to offer herself up as an alleged victim of repressed memories. Before Fred knows what is happening, his seemingly innocent quest places him on Molly's path, one that is filled with murder and other violent acts. Fred realizes that he must now do more then rescue a painting, he must rescue his beloved and perhaps himself. The second novel in the Fred Taylor series is absolutely great. The story line is extremely well written, entertaining, and absolutely frightening in that it seems so realistic and plausible. With novels like MAN WITH A SQUIRREL and HARMONY IN FLESH AND BLACK (the first Taylor tale), Nicholas Kilmer deserves to become a household name. Harriet Klausner --

The best thing I have ever read in my life
I cried at several points because I was so excited. Each part of the story gets better and better.
I loved it. It's a pity the whole story was never finished.

Very informative and entertaining maritime novel.
This is a great novel, one of the few I have gone back to re-read. The main character shows up in different roles at a dozen or so of the great naval events in world history. It's a good way to learn a bit of maritime history.
