Frannie and Pickles is a humorous and clever didactic story that leaves you chuckling and contemplative over those with whom we keep company. Children will love it for its absurdness.

For over forty years I've been waiting for a book like this
This fully-illustrated hardback has come out to coincide with the like-named exhibition at Telfair Museum of Art. It may be the largest retrospective show of Frieseke's work to date (it is certainly NOT the first). Many well-illustrated catalogs of his work have been published in the past - I have six of them on my shelf - but this is by far the most comprehensive. The primary author, Nicholas Kilmer, also wrote the highly-acclaimed _A Place in Normandy_ and the Fred Taylor mysteries (_Harmony in Flesh and Black_, etc.). Contributions by David Sellin, Virginia Mecklenburg, H. Barbara Weinberg, and Linda McWhorter (coordinator of both exhibition and catalog) flesh out the text. The reproductions are magnificent. Do a web search on Frieseke, and see how many paintings you recognize. It is high time that this painter of well-known images should gain "name-recognition"!

The French Marble Clock

The only book on the subject, and a good one.
How many times have you seen one of those big old French marble clocks for sale at auction or in a shop? Were you intrigued by the craftsmanship, curious about the history, or just impressed by the size? Wonder no more, now that Nicolas Thorpe has written this useful guide to these relics of a past age.

These clocks were made during the 1830 to 1930 period, and they fall into my definition of an investment antique. They were expensive when new, still useful, and won't be made again. Yet they seem undervalued in the market. Thorpe discusses the aesthetic, historical, and practical aspects of these behemoths. Much of the book is a simple, practical course in cleaning and restoring these cases and movements. It is directed at the LAYMAN, not the expert. If you have never repaired a clock, if you are reasonably handy you can follow Thorpe's directions and do it right.

Even if you only own one French marble clock, you should have this book. Whether it's a petite boudoir timepiece or a fireplace mantel juggernaut, your understanding and enjoyment will be enhanced by this book.

Great Graphic Design Book
Stemming from a 1999 lecture and slide show for the New York chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Artists, this crisply designed book with almost 150 images is sure to be of interest to designers everywhere. The works included here come from the personal and professional lives of three young designers: Nicholas Blechman, Christoph Neimann, Paul Sahre.

Blechman is the art director of the New York Times Op-Ed section, and met the other two through his self-published political 'zone, Nozone-samples from which constitute about a fifth of the book. Neimann is German a freelance illustrator for a number of well-known magazines, and a teacher at the School of Visual Arts. His samples have a slightly quirky and offbeat amusing air concealed in their simplicity. Sahre is a well known book cover designer and postermaker, and his samples tend to be more outrightly commercial and graphically appealing than the others.

The book is a quick read, you can probably absorb it in about two hours, and well worth it for those interested in how graphic designers work and arrive at solutions. My own favorite part was the brief "killed work" section, where the three designers discuss work of theirs that was rejected and why. I'll definitely try to track down Fresh Dialogue 2, which covers the next year's lecture.

Gerogia's Paitings in beautiful reproductions
This book contains selections from Nicholas Callaway's other O'Keefe books- One Hundred Flowers, In the West, and New York Years. If you own only one of them, this is the one to own. There are some surprising paintings in here, especially if you've only seen the flower paintings before. The book is quite large, and the color reproductions seem pretty accurate from the few paintings I've actually been able to compare. Wonderful book!

Lovely story
I wanted to teach the German tradition of St. Nicklaus Abend to my daughter's 1st grade class and used this book. It may not give the historical account of St. Nicklaus, but it tells of how 2 children make a wish on St. Nicklaus eve and it is heard by St. Nicklaus. The author tells the story so that young children can understand that there is more to just giving a gift. The illustrations are beautiful and were admired by the whole class. I also read the book to my 3 year-old daughter's pre-school class and they marvelled at the pictures. An excellent book to add to a child's library.

superb introduction to renaissance painting
We are used to looking at "old Master" painting as if it were just a matter of style, but the truth is that Renaissance art was in important respects the product of a revolution in the use of binding media (water and egg yolk for tempera; oils) for pigments, and in the prepared surfaces (wood panels, paper, canvas) to which these pigments were applied. This wonderfully illustrated book distills the knowledge gained by the restorers of the National Gallery in London, from decades of well-documented, cutting-edge restorations of the outstanding Italian and northern European Old Master paintings in their care. It is much, much more than a technical handbook. Historical essays cover the categories of Renaissance painting, 1300 to 1500, and their many uses, while the second half of the book is an informative catalogue (with gorgeous color reproductions) of individual paintings by many of the best-known Renaissance artists (Botticelli, Jan van Eyck, Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Durer, to name the most obvious).

Good Reference Book for Globalization Study
This is a very new book printed in 2001, and I am very lucky to find this book as the source of my study on financial globalization. This book does not only cover broad range of topic of globalization in financial market but also cover the economic, social, and national aspects of globalization. In addition to that, this book does not only discuss the theoretical part but also the practical importance to make it easier for me to understand as a student. I recommend this book to other student studying on globalization in financial market, and also to working professionals interested to learn about financial markets.
