Brief look at the s block.
This book is excellent provided you are trying to either refresh old chemistry courses or are trying to learn the bare minimum about the S block and periodic properties. The book is not strong in reinforcing the principles provided in it's pages.

Petain (Profiles in Power Series)(Paper)
Published in Textbook Binding by Pearson Education UK (November, 1997)
Author: Nicholas Atkin
Amazon base price: $36.80
Used price: $19.98
Average review score:

Petain shown as both saviour and traitor.
Nicholas Atkin has written a succinct biography of the Marshall which covers all the major controversies about his unlikely life. Although the author has little sympathy with the viewpoint of loyalists who have sought to justify Vichy, there is enough insight here for the general reader to understand why the Marshall personally remained popular long after his policy of collaboration with Germany had obviously failed. The book is excellent in persuading that Petain's policies in office from 1940 were largely conditioned by his previous life. For example, his naive trust in family values and rural work were a result of his traditional upbringing in the Pas de Calais. His military success at Verdun caused him to misjudge the value of defensive lines against the German attack in the second world war. The collapse of Vichy in 1944 and the post war trial are treated rather sketchily. The final review chapter on the man and the myth is a first rate balancing act in the historiography of this highly unusual dictator.

Buy extra copies for others
This is the fourth time I am buying this book. Being a non-native Philadelphian, I wanted to know more about why the City developed the way it has. I was amazed at the information contained in the book. As an example it explains why the City neighborhoods have such narrow but deep lots. Since first reading the book ten years ago I have given copies to several co-workers. If you want to understand current Philadelphia and its culture this is a must read. The book was written by several Philadelphia professors, each examining a period of History.

The way they were...
If you landed here through a title or subject search, you've probably already seen this book in the library. You have my sympathy on learning that it is out of print. (If you came here through my personal page, I'm flattered!) This is a book of photographs of Russia from the decade before World War I. Thing is, these are mostly _color_ pictures. This early color process produced images that are about as good as the color photos in the Sunday newspaper today. The photographer, S. M. Prokudin-Gorskii, showed the images in the form of a slide show to Tsar Nikolai II, in hopes of having similar exhibitions in Russian schools.

The subject matter is fairly prosaic. The images are postcard views of rustic villages, broad rivers, wooden dams, happy peasants at work and at leisure, exotic Caucasian and central Asian tribespeople in colorful native dress, lots of onion-domed churches and shrines. Prokudin-Gorskii meant these pictures to show the pageantry and glory of Mother Russia.

Today, they are painful reminders of a world that has been smashed forever. The peasants would die in the Great War, or starve in the postwar famines, or butcher each other in the Civil War, or be executed in the Red Terror. The public works would go to ruin due to the incompetence of the commissars who would run them after the bourgeois engineers had been eliminated. The colorful tribespeople would be exiled. The churches would be looted and demolished. The peaceful meadows would be paved over by ill-conceived, gigantic heavy industrial plants. The villages would be burned by civil war and foreign invasions. Seeing all these images which look like they were taken yesterday, and knowing the fate that awaited their subjects, is quite an experience.

Contrast this book to another book of pre-war Russian color photographs, _Leonid Andreyev, Photographs of a Russian Writer_. His vision is much more personal, but no less poignant.

Good Reference for Wing Chun/Kenpo/Etc. Practitioners
This book is very well translated and lays out the various techniques clearly (with a couple of exceptions). Students of Kung Fu, Kenpo, Ninjitsu, and similar styles will find much familiar material here, with some twists. Provides a good range of weapons defenses, from blades to handguns, and is quite comprehensive for its size.

Good and easy reading book
I have read this book and I found it very useful for those who are beginning with internet projects (like me). It will explain step by step how to build good and efficient programs. The reason why I rated 8 is because the book doesn't explain too much (at all, in fact) the problems of database connection, and maybe it needs a little more explanation of features like mixing Java (not JavaScript) with PB and so on. Anyway, it's a very good book. Buy it, and learn.

Great handbook!
For the novice astrologer, this book provides understandable explanations of the basics of astrology. Its comprehensive scope also gives introductions to the more specialized aspects of astrology, such as astro-economics, political astrology, and locational astrology. There is a lack of depth on these latter subjects; however, the fundamentals are presented clearly and fully.

Useful Handbook for Protein NMR study
The book is very complete, covers most of the field in protein NMR studies. The book is well organised, with plenty of figures to facilitate easy understanding of the subject. Overall, I find it is very helpful for anyone who will be interested in protein NMR research. I have actually seen quite a number of copies in a few NMR laboratories and I would recommand this book to all those who are looking for an complete introductory book in NMR and protein study.
