How to destroy a Classic
I have been in the field of music education for over 35 years, earning two Ph.D.s and an Ed.D. This wonderful dictionary, originally published as Dr. Theodore Baker's, "Pocket Manual of Musical Terms", (©1933 by Schirmer) was in use by most of my own piano instructors as a valuable tool for both students and teachers alike. And, the subsequent editions up to this one, were able to maintain that same high level of authorship without sacrificing what the book was used for, namely-- a quick "look-up" dictionary. However, Ms. Laura Kuhn, the "new" editor, has managed to destroy through her ignorance of classical music and political correctness, so many of the classical terms and has deleted a great many others using a method I am unable to fathom.
After teaching thousands of piano and music theory students in the private sector and in universities, I can no longer recommend what was a fine work. Please---do yourself a favour--at least purchase the Alfred Pocket Dictionary, small---but at least accurate---or find an older Baker edition (like the 4th edition) but don't waste your money on this !

An indispensible little gem
If you're looking for the perfect little music reference book, look no further. Not only does it define musical terms, it tells you how to pronounce them properly, too. Handy "Rules for Pronouncing German, French, and Italian" are found the Introduction, and each non-English musical term listed in the manual is followed by a phonetic pronunciation guide. A useful Comparative Table of Tempo Marks and basic music theory information (clefs, the circle of keys, etc.) are also found in the Introduction. As an added bonus, a surprisingly comprehensive Biographical List of Noteworthy Musicians (including dates) appears in the back. Whether you're looking for a small music dictionary to stash in your instrument case or a handy reference to keep on your desk, you can't go wrong with the Schirmer Pronouncing Pocket Manual of Musical Terms.

Too much repetition.
This book is about how the Communists came to power in Albania -- with a few mentions of Yugoslavia -- after World War II. Unfortunately, the author repeats himself too much so that the reader gets the impression that he could have made his point in a quarter the number of pages. I am sure the book is well researched; however, the author seems to have a bone to pick with the political spectrum in general while evidently siding with the Communist doctrine over any other. Had I not been using the book for research purposes myself, I don't think I would have finished it.

Illusions put together in fabulous articulation
This is a great book about the communist and the other factors that have driven the government in the baltic region. I was glued to the pages as if in a trance. I found the book thought provoking and challenging. I think that the other person who left a review should be dragged out onto the streets and shot. There are no words to describe the detail and thought that this book provides. If you are doing any sort of research project I would reccommend this book above all others

Teach Yourself Zulu: A Complete Course for Beginners (Teach Yourself Series)

Teach yourself Zulu
This book is attractively printed and the tape is useful for learning pronounciation. However, I found the teaching style was not good. It jumps straight in to trying to teach all the different noun classes at once, which is enough to baffle and discourage any beginner. There are other much better books on the market, such as Phezulu, and the Sanibona series. which introduce the most common noun classes first, and teach more complicated gramma later.

A real treat!
This is a really terrific book. I fell in love with the language when I first heard it. One thing couldn't be emphasized strongly enough: Get the tapes. The click sounds of Zulu are probably what are best known to outsiders, but in the way of difficult sounds there is much, much more. I do think that the authors could perhaps have done a little more than they did to explain how the non-click sounds are articulated; their comment that "hl" is like the "ll" in Welsh would probably be a big help if I lived in Wales, but I don't. Still, with a lot of practice with the tapes, I can make most of these sounds pretty well. My advice would be to listen to the tapes quite a few times before trying to imitate the sounds- that and don't give up easily.

The grammatical material is extremely well presented. The structure of Zulu is of course completely different from any European language, but even in the first lesson (devoted to greetings) one gets a good idea of what noun concords are and how they work. Zulu is perhaps a little unusual in that respect because greetings in most languages don't lend themselves nearly that well to analysis. Getting a deep look at the structure of the language just in phrases like "How are you?" and "How is it with you?" was really fun and exciting.

I hope that there will be sufficient interest generated from this book that the authors would consider writing a sequel. I would await it eagerly!

Errors up the Yin Yang!
Errors in both text and involved mathematics make this book a horrible waste of my money. I see this as, "lets fix one error on each edition, and continue selling the heck out of it to university students." Well, at least West Virginia University will no longer use this one.

Quite a few mistakes in this book . . .
keep my from rating it any higher. Olga is occasionally noted as being the oldest daughter of Alexander III; several pages later she's identified as the youngest (which she is). People in the pictures are also mis-identified. While the text is fairly entertaining, don't read this book for factual information. Still, probably a must-read for Romanov addicts.

A strange family . . .
To the descendants of Rurik, the Romanovs were social-climbing parvenus when the first of them -- Michael, a nephew-by-marriage of Ivan IV "the Terrible" -- came to the throne in 1613. But for the next three centuries, the family ruled the largest nation on earth. Among their number were weaklings and ironhanded autocrats, murderers and religious mystics, certifiable idiots and world-class leaders of great vision. Even the ablest, though, such as Peter the Great and Catherine the Great, were victims of the Russian national irony: All their accomplishments were undone within a generation. This saga of mysterious and violent death, insatiable appetites of all kinds, and intrafamilial scheming rivals TV soap operas for plot twists. A well-documented "life and times" narrative.

We've Been Waiting For You and Other Tales of Unease

buyer beware
This collection of John Burke's own stories should not be confused with a collection of other writers' stories edited by Burke called Tales of Unease (Pan Books, 1966). Unfortunately, many of these stories are rather undistinguished (which accounts for the 2-star rating above). Burke's collection of his own stories, which I haven't read, sounds much more intriguing.

Masterful Tales of Unease
John Burke is probably best known for the film novelisations he wrote in the 1960s including the Hammer Horror Film Omnibus (Volumes 1 & 2) and Dr Terror's House of Horrors. He was also the European story editor for Twentieth Century-Fox and wrote the screenplay for the 1967 Boris Karloff film "The Sorcerers". During his long career he has also written a number of short stories, 22 of which are collected here. Subtitled 'Tales of Unease', this is one of the latest collections by small press publisher Ash Tree, who have been responsible for reprinting some excellent (and some not-quite-so-excellent) collections over the past few years. Thankfully, this is one of their more worthwhile ventures, and there are quite a few gems to be discovered (or rediscovered) here. 'A Comedy of Terrors' is a snappy sick little satire of the 1960s British horror movie industry. 'For You, the Possessed' is the ultimate paranoia tale, and 'Collaboration' is a lovely story about a lady becoming a best-selling author with the help of her ghost-in-residence. The book is rounded off by 'And Cannot Come Again', written by Burke one clear sunny day in Prague. Like a couple of other stories in this collection, political machinations have a part to play in the themes of unease and desperation which develop as the story progresses. Another highly recommended collection from this particular publishing house.

With Writers Like These ...
... who needs books? A complete waste of a novel that stretches the credulity of even the lowliest reader (which I consider myself). Would you believe ... that you can see into the back seats of limos? that the cops would not check the answering machine? ... that the secretary just HAPPENS to be the goddaughter of a suspect? that the hero progressively falls more and more in love with the victim after her death (from afternoon rollerblading dates to "the love of my life)? There's more that left me shaking my head in disbelief, but it's integral for what passes for a a plot in this ego-driven mess. The name-dropping and product-dropping isn't even interesting, effective or even accurate. I only kept reading to see how bad it would get.

Hugely entertaining, savvy thriller.
I thoroughly enjoyed Nicholas Coleridge's literate thriller. It's beautifully written, with rarely a slack section. Coleridge displays awesome insider's knowledge of the publishing and fashion industries, and his action scenes similarly reveal detailed familiarity with locales in Europe, New York and Hong Kong. No wonder. The author is a well-traveled writer whose previous books dealt with the fashion industry, and international publishing tycoons. "With Friends Like These" is an immensely enjoyable book, with enough action and romance, and suspense, to make it a page-turner.

"Ask Bu" is the best book for pidgin lovers. Bu (although outdated) still brings on hearty laughter for readers and listeners, especially if the reader is adept at speaking the Waimanalo native language. Actually, the book is a collection of fan mail that locals (and haoles) sent Bu. It's da bess!

Essential reading for the history of the RN in the 1980s
Barker's account of the naval side of the Falkland's War is fascinating reading, but more so is the telling of the backstairs campaign to save HMS Endurance.

Barker, captain of Endurance in the build-up to and during the Falklands War, tells how military cutbacks led to the proposal that the ship be withdrawn from the South Atlantic and how that decision contributed to the Argintine invasion.

Barker's campaign to save his ship brought the severe displeasure of Whitehall onto his head; displeasure in no way decreased when he was eventually proved right. He pulls no puches in laying out the mistakes made during the war and in his criticism of the war that Endurance and her drew were treated during and after it.
