An area that desperately needs more researchers!!
The army of Alexander would seem to be an excellent topic for a book. Yet, this is the only one in existence that documents colours as well as weapons/tactics etc. The art is quite superb. A unique book, delving into an area that despeartely needs more researchers!

Serendipity in a public library
Serendipity-c.f. stumbling across one of the greatest travel books, well beaten and thumbed, in local library, only to find it is sadly out of print. Nicholas Coleridge is, by all records, the first non-fictional person to succeed at this mighty challenge, four years before Palin. Not only did he take a route more faithful to Verne, via Djibouti and the Horn of Africa, but without BBC backing and five man crew. The style of writing is journalistic, rather than romantic or humerous, and if he shares a love of the passing places it was not flowing from the pages. Perhaps being true to Fogg's style he was utterley phlegmatic and pragmatic, with his eye firmly on the clock. Striding through the countries, the Old Etonian must have been the image of a latter day Fogg, kitted out from Jermyn Street and complete with swordstick.Traveller's anecdotes add depth to the book, but the true pleasure is sharing in his sense of achievement. As for myself, only by begging the librarian to make the book "Ex Stock" did I come to keep my copy for 25p, sitting to the left of Verne's on the bookshelf on the basis of numerical ordering. I hope that with his recent high profile in fiction that this work will be republished an established as a great travel account.

Another Good Reason to Visit Athens
This is a magnificient book, tribute to an incredible and meaningful project. Readers interested in the antiquities will want this; those who are involved in urban planning, cultural heritage conservation or related fields should definitely take a look. Considering that much of modern Athens is practically an archaeological treasure trove, it says something for the Athenians that they are willing to delay construction of important infrastructure so that thorough investigations of all sites affected can be made, and even change the location for a planned station so as to accomodate the preservation of a site.

The value of this book lies not in any breathtaking discoveries, but rather in the meticulous record of each site excavated and the indefatigable love of history which permeates throughout. It is a pity that in many other places with sufficient material prerequisites the preservation of historical and cultural heritage is either still in its infancy or simple sidelined.

If you are going to be in Athens before the end of this year, don't miss the exhibition.

A Treasury of Information
Much, much more than an atlas, this is a wonderful compendium of Jewish lore and history, that makes it invaluable for anyone who desires a better understanding of Judaism, Jewish history and the Jewish people and their culture.

The book covers Jewish history and Judiasm and Jews in all their many varieties and will probably act as an eye opener for thos who have a narrow or stereotyped image of Jews. It extends from ancient days down to the mid-1980's (the information on Russian and Ethiopian Jews needs updating).

The illustrations are sumptuous and the maps are generally clear, thought at times misleading: the naive reader might get the impression that Jewish life is non existent in the USA between Dallas and Tucson, Kansas City and Las Vegas, and Minneapolis and Seattle. They would also come away with the impression that Israel's Jewish population is less dense than that of Southern California or the North East Industrial belt, and that it is on a par with that of Birobidzhan, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, and the eastern and western extremities of Cuba.

I keep it handy by my desk for reference--but unfortunately for my work, I often get distracted into reading much more text, scanning more pictures, and looking at yet more map detail than I had intended. I recommend it as an informative background resource both for those steeped in Judaism and Jewish life who erroneously think they know all there is to know, and as a basic text to those seeking to trace and understand their Jewish ancestry or to find a way (back) into Judaism.

One flaw in this otherwise classic book is that the author does not acknowledge his literally inestimable debt to the late Christina Foyle.
