Strongly recommended
I must have read this and "Ice Princess" the follow-up book at least 20 times in the past few years. Whether you're into skating or not, which in my case, I just like to watch, I'm sure you will love this book. It's a great story of determination and giving it everything you've got. The characters are unbelievable and the storyline is great! I can't wait to read them again! They're well worth buying!

Awesome!
I never got the chance to ice dance, but the way the writer portarys it, I'd love to go sign up. This and his other book, Ice Princess, are awesome! If you have not read them you need to, no matter if your into ice dancing you will be after this!

Absolutely Wonderful Book! I A "6.0! "
I love this book! It's great for people who ice dance or figure skate, because they can relate to this! :)

A Treasure--Required Reading For All Pet Owners!!
This book should be required reading for anyone contemplating getting a pet of any kind, and even those who have had pets all their lives will learn much from this latest treasure from Dr. Dodman. No one comes close to having his depth of understanding of animal behavior, and most especially, of how it is profoundly affected by the relationship of animals with humans. The beautifully-told stories in this book, at turns inspirational and heart-wrenching, will cause much reflection in readers. I thought I already understood how my feelings and behavior could affect my pets, because, after reading Dr. Dodman's book "The Cat Who Cried for Help" I sought him out to solve what other vets had written off as an impossible situation between my two cats. Dr. D. with endless patience never gave up on my cats--or on me!--and his compassionate understanding resulted in a happy ending for Peri, Dax & me. But in reading this book, I learned much about my own behavior that I could see created and contributed to perpetuating the problem (Dr. Dodman, the soul of kindness, very nicely didn't point it out at the time!)So, if you care about animals, have animals, or are contemplating getting animals, get this book today--it will make a world of difference to them, and to you. (Thanks again, Dr. D.!!!)

I love this book
I am actually more of a horse person but this book if great for anyone who loves animals! Even some people who dont like animals would enjoy it. Dr. Dodman's humor and knoledge are the perfect combination of make this book a great success. The stories are great! Hope you buy this book...enjoy!

Dr. Dodman Has Another Hit on His Hands
Dr. Nicholas Dodman, author of four other books on dog and cat behavior and founder of the Behavioral Clinic at Tufts Veterinary School, has once again demonstrated why he's a leading authority on dog/cat behavior. "If Only They Could Speak" chronicles several stories on dog and cat behavior pulled from the clinic's lengthy history.

The reader gets to see the "case" from start to finish, and in doing so comes to an understanding as to the necessity for treating serious behavioral issues from a behavior modification as well as a pharmacological approach. But the author's style keeps the book moving from chapter to chapter. Aptly subtitled, "Stories about Pets and Their People", Dr. Dodman presents each case in such a manner that the love between the pet and its owner is not given a backseat to the issues at hand.

It is unlikely that any pet owner will fail to recognize one or more of the problems related in "If Only They Could Speak". Dominance, separation anxiety, and aggression problems are handled with Dr. Dodman's normal aplomb and compassion. And while the problems are serious, disrupting the owner's household and day-to-day life, Dr. Dodman offers helpful information which should go a long way to helping the owners and dogs resolve their problems. Dr. Dodman's writing style makes for a fast and enjoyable read.

A blueprint for the Intelligent Enterprise.
This book is the first to explain how information flow and the management of corporate knowledge changes the nature of business. Unlike business process reengineering and other management fads which treats individuals as cogs in the business machine, this book advances the notion that the intelligence and expertise of the people in an organization define success--and that such intelligence and expertise can be amplified by information technology.

Excellent.
I'm a technologist, and this book is the first to adequately explain the relationship between information technology and business organization--David M. Kalman

Actions for an organization to last into the future.
This book is well grounded and strategically linked to the very existance of organizations in the future. The authors discribe a dynamic process based on values to move any bureaucracy toward cutomer focused success. Read any chapter and reap the benefits, read the whole and fly

Everything I Wanted to Know About Kilims
This book is very informative. I wanted to become knowledgable about Kilims and this book has really helped me to become so. The photographes are very beautiful. I hope to become an advid collector and with the information from this book I am a confident buyer.

A magnificent kilim picture book for the tribal rug fanatic.
Gorgeous rugs. Gorgeous photographs. Lots of them. For people who love oriental rugs, especially funky tribal rugs, and for people who are demanding about the pleasure they expect from rug books--this book is a great find.

This is my favorite book on Flatweaves.
This is my favorite book on Flatweaves. It covers more than just kilims and is very comprehensive. If you are interested in any Flatweaves you should have this book. I use this book when I am trying to identify flatweaves and I find it a simple, user friendly, but comprehensive resource.

Imagination
This book is my favorite gift for a child. I have even bought copies for adults. It's a wonderful tool for showing a child the joy of imagination. The author tells a charming story about a little girl in a real painting. Could it be true? The illustrator, magically brings the painting to life. Not only does the little girl in the red dress pose with her cat and dog but she throws the dog a stick, she stirs the cooks's soup, she eats a cherry tart. In a very subtle way the book teaches a child to open their minds as well as their eyes. To search for more than what their eyes see. In the book, the little girl looks out a window, at a peaceful country scene below and waits for something exciting to happen. I wonder if she is looking down at us now. If she knows her picture hangs in a museum and that a delightful story has been written about her. I think she does.

Ce livre est une oeuvres d'art! A work of art!
J'adore ce livre! Un conte a charmant. Les illustrations sont tres belles! Elles devraient etre dans un musee! Ce livre est un grand accomplissement. Merci beaucoup! I adore this book. A charming story and beautiful illustrations. This book is a grand accomplishment! Thank you!

A charming story and museum quality illustrations!
This book is a work of art! A charming story of historical interest with museum quality illustrations! This book is the perfect introduction to fine art for a child. Everyone who sees this book falls in love with it ! It is a favorite of my daughter's and mine. Maybe someday I will dress my young daughter in a red dress and have an artist - preferably Cynthia von Buhler - paint her in the folk style of the book!

Agreeing with the other reviews
Amazing amazing book. This was my invaluable guidebook when it came to travelling St. Petersburg and the outlying districts for a week and a half (alone). I brought three books with me to St. P and soon was bringing along only this one when I went out. It has exact details/directions for everything, and really provides all the nitty-gritty that other guidebooks lack. If you want to buy one book, buy this one. If you want to buy more than one, still buy this.

Surviving Cyrillic
I visited the wonderful city of St Petersburg in 1996, and I treated Nick Selby's first edition of this book as my most valuable possession while I was there. As an independent traveller with no guide other than the Lonely Planet, I relied very heavily on this little gem of a book, and it never let me down.

From purchasing a train ticket in Finland (the book describes the process of purchasing your ticket in Helsinki in absolute detail), to finding somewhere to stay (the St Petersburg hostel), to navigating the streets (all signposted in Cyrillic), to following in the footsteps of great authors (like my personal favourite, Dostoevsky) this book was my friend and saviour.

As an English-only speaker I found St Petersburg to be an intimidating city (very few people speak English, and the Cyrillic script adds several degrees of difficulty to written communication), so I honestly don't think I could have attempted, let alone survived, independent travel in this fabulous city without this book.

Far and Away the Best St. Pete Guidebook
The group I was with in Russia had every guidebook under the sun, and the LP guide only one we ended up consistantly using. Like all guidebooks, some of the information is out of date. For instance, the prices listed in the guide were often 4-5 times higher than what we ended up paying (not that I'm complaining). Overall, the guide is very accurate, the maps are great, and the suggestions are right on the money. Nick Selby's wit and style make the guide not only practical but highly entertaining. You aren't going to find a better St. Pete guidebook.

Can anyone answer this question????
Is The Master Mariner the same as The Master Mariner Running Proud. Their reviews look the same, and I wonder if it's the same book published with different titles. Can someone help me?

An educational maritime adventure under sail.
This is my first book by Nicholas Monserrat. From the very first page the author held me captive all through the novel. To weave a fictional character in and out of historical events, and real peoples lives, was a stroke of story telling genius. I was both entertained and educated, and left with a desire to know more about the happenings that the central character lived through. This book will, I'm sure, satisfy anyone with a sense of adventure and an eagerness to learn.

The finest historical maritime book ever written ...
Master Mariner, by N. Monsarrat, is the finest historical maritime novel I have ever read ... through a character damned to live centuries at sea we experience the evolution of seafaring under sail from the days of the Spanish Armada to the beginnings of modern times ... I am an historian, hold a Merchant Marine Master's license, have written the text book "Celestial Navigation", spent years at sea, and read hundreds of books on the subject ... this is the BEST ... it should be reprinted!

Home Bliss
"A home is an extension of ourselves, expressing our interests and beliefs even when we aren't there."

If you love your home, you already know that a home plays a central role in you life. Each home reflects our individual tastes and can be a retreat from the stresses of our modern lifestyle.

This book contains over 500 color photographs to give you inspiring original ideas for every room in your home. There are sections on Space, Light, Color, Surfaces, Air and Sound to demonstrate the principles of successful interior design.

"While natural light is vital for life,
shade and shadows bring repose." pg. 50

Space - How do you think about space? Are you considering a minimalist lifestyle or do you want to order your clutter?

Light - Illuminate a room, use natural lighting or put up curtains to block light.

Color - The decorator's color wheel, explanation of color, using milk paint, an expression of yourself in earth tones.

Surfaces - Flooring, rugs, walls, tables & chairs, visual texture, patterns and stencils.

Air - Circulation, windows, plants & flowers, humidity, moisture.

Sound - Noise & echo, muffling noise, decorative textile hangings, pleasant sounds, wind chimes.

Home Comforts - How do you relax, entertain, cook, sleep, bathe, work?

20 Projects are included throughout the book. You might enjoy making a sunflower stenciled cloth, a double-sided screen, collectable shadow boxes, rolled beeswax candles, curtains, beautiful pressed flower candles, lampshades, cushions or an intoxicating rosemary wood polish. I imagine you could also infuse lavender. How about clove and honey soap you could give as gifts?

I love the "Glass Bead Door Curtain." Totally quaint! And then there is a section on entertaining where they use small rocks hanging on strings as table weights to keep the table cloth from flying away in the breeze.

Useful sections include:

Kitchen cupboard restoration
Painting techniques
Restoring garden furniture
A Resources Section
Easy-to-use Index

A book to read when you want to dream!

Not Just for Decorators!
I found this book amazing because it helps you to organize ideas for any type of design. It allows you to use different elements like color, space, and light in a way that you can combine them with things that you may already have. After applying some of the ideas in my own home I noticed people would come in and feel different, I felt like I was somewhere else. I recommend this book to anyone who would like to little by little begin to redecorate or likes a change every now and then.

Brilliant evocation of an ideal way to live
I just love this book. The evocative messages are an inspiration. Don't just look at the pictures - read this book!

stunning accomplishment
This author knows her stuff! Reading Stephanie Cowell on London is like being there. A wonderfully evocative tale of life during Shakespeare's time. Not to be missed by those who love period fiction done expertly. A gifted writer.

It brings the era of the English Civil War to vivid life.
Stephanie Cowell's "The Physician of London" is the second novel in a trilogy, and continues the story begun in "Nicholas Cooke." One of its themes is the tremendous conflict between religion and science during the dark era of the English Civil War. Nicholas Cooke is both a priest and a scientist. The life of the day is brilliantly, vividly described, and we relive the terrors and the joys of these insightfully, incisively wrought people, so real that we think they actually lived, and some of them are, of course, historical. The book is exciting, and filled with action as well as philosophy, and engrossing from beginning to end. Stephanie Cowell's writing is magnificent. There are lessons here, in the power struggles of Charles I and Oliver Cromwell, in the search for scientific truth by Nicholas Cooke, in this tale of bigotry and corruption and love, for our own time. You will love this superb novel.--Robert Blumenfeld

I felt so involved I couldn't put the book down.
When I began reading the first chapters of Nicholas Cooke, I wasn't sure I liked his character. He was so hot-tempered and didn't seem to appreciate some people as he should have. As I continued to read on into the Physician of London, and as Nicholas continued to mature into the man he became in The Physician of London, I found myself more and more involved with this man and his life. I realized that his character, his desires and dreams and his conflicts, reminded me of my own desires and dreams and conflicts. Like a good cook, Stephanie Crowell flavors the book wonderfully with the Elizabethan/Stuart atmosphere and writes in such a way as to involved the reader not only in the main character, but all the characters. She has made this reader at least impatient for the publishing of the last book in the trilogy of Nicholas.

Very Useful
This book is an outstanding reference for the primary care pediatrician in office practice. It is much better oriented to day-to-day pediatrics than Nelson's and its imitators. The CD-ROM is very useful and easy to navigate. As a bonus, the CD-ROM contains all of the excellent illustrations for Zitelli & Davis' superb Atlas of Pediatric Physical Diagnosis.
