A great translation of a timeless classic
A brilliant translation of one of Euripides' finest, excellently capturing the mood and spirit of the text. A prose translation, Rudall's effort has done great service to Euripides. The characterisations are good, and the language is almost always fluid and idiomatic, with only a few clumsy exceptions. Excellent!

An accurate and wonderfully performable translation!
When you think of Greek tragedy and Euripides what immediately springs to mind? A desperately dry philosophical volume? Believe me, that is not the case with Ipheginia at Aulis. This beautifully crafted volume tells of the conflict between political and familial responsibility with a smattering of divine intervention. The beautiful Helen has be kidnapped by Paris and taken back to Troy. Helen's husband, Menalaus, brother to King Agamemnon of Mycenae persuades his brother to send the largest ever Greek fleet to take the land of Troy and retieve Helen. As the fleet is ready to sail from Aulis, the winds die and they are stranded. Unless, as the evil and manipulative prophet Calchas says, a sacrafice of a certain sixteen year old virgin princess is made then they will be permenantly beached. Here follow many twists and turns and a ride through the Ancient Greek mythical world with the fate of a whole nation at stake. How will Agamemnon fight his conscience and persuade his wife Clytemnestra to bring his beloved daughter to meet her death? To what depths will he stoop to to follow the quest for glory? Whatever the outcome, this is a beautiful play which lends itself to performance at any level- sure to bring any audience to their feet!

Well worth reading
In this true life adventure British journalist Nicholas Gordon journeys to Tanzania, Africa, to investigate the status of the declining wild elephant population. (20,000 slaughtered in ten years leading up to 1990 when he was there).

Elephants are frequently referenced but not directly encountered. The emphasis is on how the socialist government is trying to convert the native people's from hunting, and or poaching, to other forms of food production.

He interview numerous officials and violators but presents his material in the form of a narrative which is quite intriguing and well written as you might expect from an accomplished journalist and magazine editor.

Well worth reading.

The Kennett Revolution: Victorian Politics in the 1990's
Published in Paperback by New South Wales Univ Pr Ltd (June, 1999)
Authors: Brian Costar and Nicholas Economou
Amazon base price: $13.00

A clear expalantion of a dangerous government's policies.
The contributors to this collection of essays about the 6 year Kennett Governmeent in the Australian State of Victoria, reveal a government hell bent on following the policies of Regan and Thatcher to their logical conclusion.

Jeff Kennett and his ministers have set a course for Victoria where no one is a person anymore but is only a client or customer. Not only has language been coopted to change public perceptions but some of the most potent examples of fascist propaganda are now commonplace in Victoria. As the economy prospers , schools ,transport, public servcies and hospitals wither and die.

The book is well written and a valuable resource for students of the cancer of economic rationalism.

Fast-reading primer on common stocks
This primer on common stocks hits on all the key terms to know about when investing. Each key/chapter explains a particular topic such as "Fundamental Analysis", "Technical Analysis", "EPS", etc. The writing is clear and concise, though the plugs for Barron's get a little old. Overall, a great, inexpensive book to get you up-to-speed on investing in common stocks

Good review of options and futures trading
Good review of options and futures trading. Each section is just 2-3 (short) pages, usually with an example or two, which makes the book very easy to pick up and read a little at a time. Since each section is so short, it also serves as a useful quick reference.

For more detailed reading on options/futures trading, I'd suggest finding another book. Use this mainly for quick reference, or as a refresher.

King of Coins
If you like military historical fiction in a story that has a beginning, middle and an end, with lots of action, tactical and weapon descriptions then enjoy this book. I reckon it is better than his English Civil War series, at least it doesn't "wander" as much. I would, however have appreciated some maps. I have yet to read "Knave of Swords" but am looking forwards to going backwards to the prequel.

Last of the Tsars: the life and death of Nicholas and Alexandra

A good book for Russian history lovers!
I love to read about the Czars and especially about Nicholas and Alexandra. Had he loved his people as much as he loved Alexandra he might have been a better Ruler and made history, not for his death but for his accomplishments. What a shame to have such power and use it to turn an Empire into conflicts, mutinery and suffering when he could have given his people a much better life. Still, I enjoyed the book and it's worth a place on my bookshelves.

Murder in Elizabethan England
Lord Westfield's Men are once again hip deep in a series of murders, Elizabethan style, in The Laughing Hangman by Edward Marston. Nicholas Bracewell, man for all seasons, bookholder and mediator for the actors, and detective when anything threatens them, is faced with one of his thorniest mysteries. The players have agreed to perform a play by a notorious and drunken playwright, Jonas Applegarth. At the same time Nicholas has been asked to rescue a young boy whose father says has been impressed against his will into the Chapel Children, a theater group connected with the Chapel Royal. While trying to find out what is credible, Bracewell discovers the body of the Master of the Chapel hanging above the stage at Blackfriars. As he approaches the body he hears a mocking eerie laughter before a door slams. This initiates an intriguing search for the laughing hangman, another death complete with laughter and yet another before the murderer is apprehended. Marston describes an interesting, believable world in Elizabethan London. The writ of the law does not travel far from the main streets and people often take matters into their own hands to defend themselves or attack their enemies. The theater is really outside the law, allowed to exist on sufferance. This, I believe, makes it easier for Nicholas to understand the mind of a person who could act outside the law. In a sense, it is all theater and an understanding of what happens on stage is prerequisite to solving the mystery. The theater world is riveting to tour, to trace the origins of much of our entertainment today. I keep hoping that Shakespeare will wander in to watch one of Lord Westfall's Men's offerings. Maybe he is in disguise. Marston provides us with interesting three-dimensional characters for the most part. Even the minor roles have meat to them. The story is well-told and, while I figured out the murderer several pages before the end, I was not at all sure of the motivation. And the motivation is something that could have caused a murder only in Elizabethan England. You cannot do much better than to pay a visit to Nicholas Bracewell in Elizabethan London
