Marital Fights Over Money
Part Two of the Stevenson family saga is set in the years 1845 to 1850 as more entertaining characters are introduced and the turns and twists of plot continue to grip us. John Stevenson has become rich building his business on integrity and trust with those he employs and those who conduct business with him. Nora has emerged as a woman truly ahead of her time, adroitly managing the finances of the family firm. All is not well, however, for as united as John and Nora grow when besieged by adversity, they drift apart when life runs smooth. John, in pursuit of more, bigger and better contracts, fails to see his pride bringing Stevenson's to the brink of ruin--more than once. Nora must independently and furtively excercise her own financial genius and creativity and steel herself to defy the man she loves in order to halt crushing disaster from overtaking them. All this is done as she adds three children to the three with which they begin the story, gains social acceptance from many while remaining indifferent to snubs from some, and dazzles capitalists of her own and other countries. Meanwhile, Walter Thornton is deeply involved in his secret life--'nuff said--and by the end of the book, Arabella has traveled from tiresome zeal to frightening fanaticism in her crusade to redeem the fallen. She is a lady with no zest for fun. This installment is heavy on banking, investment, and money manipulation, which lost me, for all it was well written. That's not hard since I have trouble adding up the change in my wallet. It also takes us into French country life and religion, fox hunting, The Irish potato famine, the underside of Victorian morality, and extra tidbits about John's past and Nora's family.

Very informative, accurate information.
This is still one of the most concise books on the introduction to robotics being published. All of the information is relevant to industry applications.

Rum War at Sea
Probably no other era in American history has been more controversial than the prohibition period, extending from the middle 1920's through the early 1930's. This volume, presenting a history of the Coast Guard's participation in enforcement of the National Prohibition Act, is based on recently declassified official records and sources and represents the first organized presentation of the Coast Guard's role in the "Rum War." Although the Coast Guard seized literally thousands of vessels, which were engaged in transporting liquor into the United States from the sea, only seizures of special interest or significance are for the most part recounted in this book. Highlighting the interesting and well-written text are dramatic accounts of actual battle engagements and photographs of some of the men and vessels of the Coast Guard and "Rum Runners."

Out of this World Trivia
The Science Fiction Book of Lists is both historical and hysterical. It has been a staple of my reading for a few decades now. Chock full of information on EVERYTHING SF, I rely on it as a resource to guide me towards other books, and movie rentals, and even music.
Even though my copy is dog-eared and outdated, it's still a treasure. (In fact, I had initally come to Amazon.com to see if there was a newer version).
The book is both inventive and useful. It lists all nominees and winners of the major SF awards, as well as sillier groupings. "The Color out of Space" (a list of stories and books divided by color), for instance.

The Smoking Gun by Malcolm Rose
When Ros Rabin's grandfather suffers a heart attack on Sports Day, everyone assumes he died of natural causes. Everyone but Ros's brother, david. But when David, too, is found murdered, Ros and her boyfriend Kevin must discover the truth before they become victims. It's a good mystery for early teens, and very easy to follow.

A Dark Voyage Into The Heart of the Canadian Arctic
This book is interesting for a number of reasons. First, it is a story which has a history of its own, written decades ago and re-published in an updated version exhibiting the artwork of the original hardcover. However, it is the story of the legendary John Hornby which grasps the reader, and catapults him back into a time when true adventurists and explorers still existed. The book does a wonderful job of making the reader feel that he is with Hornby in the Arctic, living in a hole dug into an esker, walking blindly through a blizzard, or starving on a river bank in the middle of Arctic 'summer'. A must read for those who enjoy stories of adventure in desolate places.
Ssadm Version 4: A User's Guide

Very complete, but not for beginners
As a college textbook for beginners, this book is less than ideal. (I studied it at college in England.) In saying that, it is a very accurate, exhaustive and intense description of SSADM and makes for difficult understanding if you're starting from scratch learning design methodologies. I found it very difficult to apply the methods to real-life situations. For those of you out there with at least some experience in a 'real' development environment, you'll probably absorb this book readily. I'll give it a fairly generous 4 stars for you seasoned developers out there, but a paltry 1 star for college students.
States and Nationalism in Europe Since 1945

Surprise! A reader-friendly textbook!
Obviously when Anderson wrote this, he had a specific reader in mind and has set up his chapters to be very friendly for a college student frantically researching for a paper.
Unlike some textbooks, this book is exactly what is states itself as "The States and Nationalism in Europe Since 1945." Topics covered by Anderson include the relationship of nationalism to the Cold War, re-emergence of demands by stateless nations, effects of European integration and globalization, immigration, and how nationalism effected the former Soviet Union, Yugoslavia and other Eastern Bloc countries.
Each chapter is very short (about 10-15 pages long) and includes a conclusion at the end which will aid in finding research. Although it's not exactly fun reading, by no means does it fall into the proverbial dry, pounding-headache dribble of some textbooks. Each chapter is also very helpful in giving examples of where certain acts of nationalism occurred in Europe as well as which minor ethnicities are present within states today.
Anderson has a impressive resume as Professor Emeritus at Edinburgh, yet he is by no means overly pro-British like many of his colleagues.
Here's an example "In terms of economic rivalries, one major European power, Britain, continued a long relative decline from being the richest European country at the beginning of the century to being, at the end of the century, the third or fourth poorest in the EU."
Another nice thing about the book is it's a very fast read. It's only 109 pages long (and that includes notes, further reading ideas, and a handy index), and it took me less than a week to breeze through while taking notes. I highly recommend this to any student looking for information on modern Europe for a poli-sci, geography or history class. Anyone researching for a paper on nationalism will obviously benefit greatly from this book as well.
