A Life CHANGING Experience!
The New African-American Man inspired me to examine my life and change. The author experienced issues in his life very similiar to the issues in my own life. I sometimes focus a lot of energy on "lack, limitation and worry," and therefore do not fully live my life. Like most people, I allow these negative elements to define and confine me. After reading the book and following the exercises, I feel empowered to change my life.

Every man, woman and child should have this book on their book shelves. It is a powerful instrument of chnage. I challenge others to read the New African-American Man and empower their lives!

New Zealand lichens - a magnificent book
The New Zealand lichens checklist, key, and glossary is the most magnificent checklist ever made. Actually, it is probably the most inspiring book on lichens to date. The coloured photos and the well-illustrated glossary makes it very useful for everyone dealing with lichens, not only for New Zealanders. This book should be available in all university libraries.

A GREAT & TOUCHING TRIBUTE TO THE MAN WHO TOUCHED OUR LIVES!
This book has it all. Stories from fans, DeadHeads, personal friends, associates, etc. Touching anecdotes. Humor. Love. Peace. And of course...THE MUSIC! No matter what your story is or how you "got on the bus" you deserve to have the oppurtunity to read this book. I promise you, whatever your connection to the Dead is, there is a story in here expressing your feelings. AMAZING. Please buy it, it is well worth it. All DeadHeads need to read this book (although I feel even someone who didn't even like the Dead would find this book equally amazing). I cannot say enough good things about this book. When I got through with my copy, I gave it to a friend because I was so touched I had to do something generous. Keep the "Unbroke Chain" alive my friends. Peace!

A Tour to Despair and Rebellion to Common Sense
A typical taste from the book:A shaken woman, deeply wounded in her soul, a poor woman forced to be a prostitute in order to feed her children, comes to the Man from the Underground for moral support. Now listen what he says to her:"In fact, you know what I really need:that you go to hell, that's what.I need peace. And I am willing to sell the whole World for a kopeyka just not to be disturbed. The World may go to hell or I won't drink my tea!Well, you know what I tell you,the World may very well go to hell, just that I can drink my tea in peace."

If you want to have a few hours of fun with what they told you is "good literature", then DON'T even open the Notes from the Underground. It's undoubtedly one of Dostoevsky's best works, but also one of the darkest and most confusing books ever written (it was Nietzche's favurite). The "hero" of the Notes is an enbittered man, an awful character, who has renounced to all hopes. He has withdrawn from public and social life and lives in his own private "underground", where he hopes the cruel laws of nature and morality will not touch him.He leads a rebellion to logic and common sense,to that "terrible two plus two is four",as he puts it.If you are willing to take a tour of his "underground", it won't be a pleasant experience at all! It's a dark place: no hope, no bright sights, no love, and even no sense. It's a place where the common world ends and where something else, very similar to hell, begins. If you want to visit the underground, be prepared to face the biggest philosophical questions about meaning of life, logic, the truth of common sense. It isn't a tour for anyone. You have to be strong, smart, you must have a sound religious and philosophical background. But if you are prepared to take the tour, you will have one of the most thrilling intelectual experiences ever.
I agree with Lev Shestov, who said that all Dostoevsky's major novels,Crime and Punishment,The Possesed,The Brothers Karamazov, are just a large annotation to the Notes from the Underground, an explanation for a larger audience. Go into the Underground and you will meet Raskolnikov, Stavroghin, the Great Inquisitor, Ivan Karamazov, Mitya Karamazov, Kirillov-they are all there, hidden behind the confusing flux of words that comes from the mouth of the Man from the Underground.

A short book that will take you a long time to read and even longer to understand. A book for corious and intellectually brave readers. A timeless piece of art, that will never stop to shake the ones who dare to take it in their hands without dismissing it as a "stupid little thing".

On a Far Wild Shore
Malcolm MacDonald has fast become one of my favorite authors. His portrayal of life during the 1800's in Great Britian and in particular Cornwall is outstanding and transports the reader to a time we can only imagine through his words. I'm amazed that he has grasped so well what women during this time period must have thought and felt. As he describes the countryside, I can visualize the scenery having traveled there not too long ago and noticed how little changed the lanes and streets are now from those times he writes about. This book was one of my favorites of this rather prolific writer but I have many more to go. Well worth the read. I'm especially impressed with the fact that he can write about sexual issues without getting graphic and vulgar.

Complete Organic Gardening
I have read many books on organic gardening by many authors, and this book is by far the best. Howard Garrett, also known as the Dirt Doctor, hosts over five hours per week of an organic gardening show on talk radio in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex area. He has done more to stimulate the popularity of organic gardening in this area than all other sources combined. While many of Howard's books are targeted to his home state of Texas, this book is not. This book should be applicable to gardeners nationwide because none of the advice is tailored to any specific geographical area.

The Organic Manual is an outstanding comprehensive resource for organic gardeners, both inexperienced and experienced. In the book Howard explains that organic gardeners should strive to improve the health of their soil and increase biodiversity through proper soil management practices, which do not involve the use of chemical fertilizers or chemical pesticides. The book covers it all, including sections on soil nutrients, mulches, pest control, plant diseases, fertilizers and soil amendments, as well as a lot of how-to information on subjects such as converting to organics, getting soil tests done, planting techniques, fertilizing, and pest control.

The section on soil nutrients goes far beyond the familiar N-P-K and discusses the importance of carbon, calcium, magnesium, sulfur and other mineral nutrients. There is also a chart that compares the use of various organic mulches, from shredded tree chips to straw to pine bark and many others. There is a discussion of the various beneficial insects, from the familiar ladybug, to green lacewings, wasps, and even fireflies, among others. There is also a discussion of harmful insects, as well as a chart that recommends organic remedies for various pests.

As an example, for control of bagworms, caterpillars, cabbageworms and the various moth larvae that often defoliate our favorite plants, the book recommends the application of Bt (bacillus thuringienses, a biological control) and the release of green lacewings and trichogramma wasps. I had never heard of Bt before I began listening to Howard's radio show, but I bought some and used it on my tomato, pepper and potato plants that were being defoliated by caterpillars. Within a day I began to find caterpillar carcasses, and my defoliation problem went away.

The book also includes a section on organic disease control, which stresses building soil health as a major control, but also recommends as remedies many products that can be bought at the grocery store or cheaply made at home, such as cornmeal, baking soda, and a spray made from pureed garlic and hot peppers. Finally there is a section that discusses the various organic fertilizers and soil amendments. In addition to the various commercially available organic fertilizers, there are discussions of the use of compost, lava sand, earthworm castings, molasses, and various manures, as well as other items.

Until a few years ago, I used chemical products in my yard and garden. I was a big fan of Miracle Gro and Sevin Dust, as well as a few other even more toxic products. After listening to Howard's talk show for a few months and reading a few of his books, including this one, I have converted to 100% organic gardening. My gardens have never been more lush and productive, and now I have the added peace of mind of knowing all the vegetables from my garden are generally free from toxic substances (not counting acid rain and airborne particles from outside my property). Looking back on my conversion to complete organics, if I had to pick a single resource that was most influential and most helpful, this book would be it. I still refer to the book fairly often when I encounter new problems or consider using a new type of soil amendment or mulch.
