Madagascar: A World Out of Time
Published in Hardcover by Aperture (December, 1990)
Authors: Frans Lanting, Alison Jolly, and Gerald Malcolm Durrell
Amazon base price: $39.95
Average review score:

A brilliant, photoessay about a wonderful place
Madagascar is bigger than Texas. This fourth biggest island in the world, also known as the "Eighth Continent", is located 200 miles off Southeast Africa. It's as remote from the United States as you can get.

In an absolutely scintillating, evocative photo essay, prominent wildlife and nature photographer Frans Lanting explores the essence of this little-known land. Lanting's four-color photographs, in large format, are almost surrealistic at times, ever exciting, and never repetitive. From the cover onward, the show chameleons, lemurs, bottle-shaped baobab trees, needlepoint karst landscapes, eroded fields, and matchless vistas in an unending procession of the strange, eerie, and beautiful. You will be amazed as each page turns to the next. An excellent written narrative compliments the effort well.

The title is double-edged for, as well as being a fascinating anachronism, Madagascar is running out of time in our generation. Human encroachment is rapidly destroying the habitat of numerous creatures found nowhere else. The Elephant Bird, Aepyornis, whose giant egg is being held in a man's arms in the book's cover photo is gone. So is the giant lemur. Others may soon go, as well. This was, and would be, an unspeakable tragedy.

So read the book and enjoy. Then see what you can do to save at least some of this fascinating paradise.

I rate this book very highly.

Magic Eye

One of the best young adult detective novels there is...
"Magic Eye" is the third book in Malcolm Rose's fantastic Lawless and Tilley series and probably the best. Brett Lawless and Clare Tilley are the most successful detective partnership in the South Yorkshire police force despite the differences in the way they go about solving crimes. Brett is a chemistry graduate, cool, calm and logical, whereas Clare is far more of a 'people person', sceptical of evidence gathered by scientific means.

Their third case is a high-profile murder investigation. "You will be getting to know me" is the cryptic message left at a murder scene, and sure enough the bodies soon begin piling up, each accompanied by a similarly sinister note. Worse still, the murderer has developed a grudge against Brett himself and begins murdering simply to taunt him. Lawless and Tilley know time is running out, yet some how the serial killer manages to stay one step ahead of them. They know the answer is staring them in the face, but like a magic eye puzzle, it is impossible to see. Soon the detectives realize that this killer is dangerously intelligent: he knows the traits the police are looking for in his victims, gender, skin colour, age, etc and manages to disprove each theory as soon as it is constructed. But how does he manage this, and what are the reasons behind his crimes?

Lawless and Tilley #3: Magic Eye is probably the best of all seven books. The story is fast paced and will have you on the edge of your seat throughout and the ending is totally unpredictable and keeps you guessing until the last minute. There is also some good character development, as Brett's history is filled in, and he and Clare begin to get closer. Overall, this is one of the best young adult detective novels I've ever read and I would recommend it to any teenage readers and crime novel fans.

An Excellent State Herpetology
This is an excellent book on the amphibians, turtles, and reptiles of Maine. Great text, detailed maps, good photographs, up-to-date taxonomy, and adheres to standardized common names. An authoritative and easily-used guide that will serve well both North American herpetologists and the citizens of Maine. Highly recommended.

This herb gardening book is a must-have!
This book is honestly my favorite gardening book - and I have quite a library! It includes basic information on both medicinal and culinary herbs, but what makes this book truly valuable is the information and advice it provides on artfully combining colors and textures. Malcom does an excellent job of combining beauty with herbal functionality. This book is overflowing with beautiful photos of plants combined in various themes, reflecting a variety of seasons and plant types. I've used several of the book's ideas to turn my garden into something really special! I highly recommend this book to every gardener!

...Almost as Good as The Show
Have You Ever watched "Malcolm in the Middle" on FOX? If you're not you are missing a great laugh. The Book Series, Which is based on the Telivision Show does not live up to the show's image, though. In This Particular Book, There are quite a number of pictures, which any "Malcolm" Fan would probably want. But, This Book is mainly about "Malcolm" who has to do a class project about his family. There are pages devoted to each aspect of the show, for example, there is a School Section,Which details his friends, and the Krelboynes, A Family Section, which includes all 5 Other Members of the Family, and of Course, all About Malcolm. The author, David Levithan did a very good job acting like Malcolm in First Person.

So, Are You A Malcolm Fan? Do you like seeing a lot of Pictures in a 48 Page Book?

Buy It!

Malcolm X (Cornerstones of Freedom)
Published in School & Library Binding by Children's Book Press (October, 1993)
Author: Jack Slater
Amazon base price: $18.70

The affirmation of blackness: The life & words of Malcolm X
Jack Slater begins his book on "Malcolm X" for the Cornerstones of Freedom series by letting the black leader explain in his own words his message to African-American young people. One of the strengths of this juvenile biography of Malcolm X is that Slater quotes his subject as often as possible, not only on the major events in his life but his views on race in the United States. This book covers how the Malcolm Little ended up in prison and was transformed into Malcolm X, Minister of the Nation of Islam. However, while it does underscore the differences between Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr., I think it underplays the causes of the break between Malcolm X and Elijah Muhammad. Malcolm X's pilgrimage to Mecca is covered in some detail, as is his assassination. So while the book may not be as clear on some of the issues as other juvenile biographies, it does make excellent use of Malcolm X's own words. As Slater says in the author's note: "While he lived, Malcolm X's influence was broad. In death, his influence is beyond measure." I have found the Cornerstones of Freedom series to be an exceptional source for additional information on important historical topics that goes well beyond what students (and teachers) are likely to find in standard American History textbooks.
