Get the Complete Guide to Rock Climbing Instead
The complete Guide to Rock Climbing (Malcolm Creasey) contains everything in this guide (identical pages) and more, and for the small additional price is worth getting instead.

One of the best beginners' guides to rock climbing!
What a gem! I was surprised nobody had yet rated this fine book. After taking introductory lessons and going on my first climb, I went to the nearest bookstore to examine all the intro books to rock climbing. After searching through about ten of them, I pulled two from the pack and bought them: "The Beginner's Guide to Rock Climbing" and "Rock Climbing: A Trailside Guide."

Half the book is filled with expertly-taken color photos to illustrate in detail the many techniques (e.g. movement on rock, specific types of holds, ropework, belaying, etc.) you will need to quickly ascend the learning curve.

Most important in my decision to buy this book was the fairly large section dedicated to technique (the very experienced instructor couldn't overemphasize technique, technique, technique). While most books only explained technique in words and/or accompanied it with black and white pictures, this book does it with detailed close-ups in full color. The book gives you plenty to learn from: creative handholds, unusual positions, chimneying, jamming, etc. In addition, anyone who has climbed will appreciate the section on how to conserve energy using different techniques outlined in the book. It may literally be a life-saver when going on longer climbs.

In your research, you may also come across Malcolm Creasey's other intro books. A good 70-80% of those other books are made up of the exact same sections from this book! It is no surprise given how instructive and valuable these core sections are.

If you're looking for one of the best introductory texts on rock climbing, look no further, because you get it all from this very comprehensive guide at a relatively rock-bottom price!

Carlos Cooks and Black Nationalism from Garvey to Malcolm
Published in Paperback by Majority Pr (June, 1992)
Authors: Robert Harris, Nyota Harris, and Grandassa Harris
Amazon base price: $9.95
Average review score:

Black Nationalism at it's strongest and wildest
Carlos Cooks was something of the mid-20th century version of Khallid Muhammad. Think Minister Louis Farrakhan can get outrageous? You ain't heard nothing yet! Carlos Cooks (a Harlem Street Speaker of the 40s thru 60s) used a lot of wild humor and shock theater to get his message across. His speech on Adam and Eve and it's relationship to Black people must be read to be believed! It seems that there were very few leaders that he really liked. Nkrumah, Haile Selassie, Fidel Castro, and many others take their lumps here along with any Black person who diverts from his dogmatic view of Blackness. Recommended for the most hardcore of militants and Black history fans only. This ain't Martin Luther king by a longshot here, so be warned!

Forerunner of 1960's Black Power Movement
Carlos Cooks was much more than a mid 20th Century Khalid Muhummad. He continued the Black Nationalist legacy left by Marcus Garvey. He wasn't afraid to point out the self-hating tendencies of the Black Middle Class (or caste as he calls them). He also is unafraid to challenge the prevailing popular thought on integration (American Tradition Vetoes Integration). He also laid the foundation for the Black power movement by influencing Malcolm X among many others. This is book that should be read for those who want to understand the roots of Black Nationalism.

The Cathars (Peoples of Europe)
Published in Hardcover by Blackwell Publishers (June, 1998)
Author: Malcolm Lambert
Amazon base price: $72.95
Average review score:

All good writers have a better editor.
This is a wonderful book for academicians to use for research on a little known and less understood culture of the middle ages. It is full of very good and accurate information. But, it is seriously flawed in that it needs a good editing. If the publishers are considering a second printing, I hope they will first submit the manuscript to a professional editor.

Compelling tale of heresy....
THE CATHARS by Malcolm Lambert, is very informative and extremely well documented with primary and secondary material. Mr Lambert was a Reader in Medieval History at the University of Bristol in the U.K. until 1991 when he retired to write.

Lambert says although some think the name Cathar is taken from the Greek word for "pure" it was probably applied by outsiders in reference to a Satanic cat ritual. The Cathars called themselves "perfects" and as far as is known they did not engage in rituals involving cats. In fact, they were vegetarians who avoided animal products. They were persecuted for their belief that Jesus and Satin were brothers, a belief considered heretical by the Catholic Church.

Persecution of the Cathars took many forms, the most violent occurring in France. In the 12th and 13th Centuries, the Capet family (Louis to Phillip the Fair) was in the process of uniting France under it's rule. The southern region, known as Languedoc, was resisting the Capets. At the same time, several Popes (Boniface, Innocent, etc.), were threatened by German Emperors from Frederick Barbarossa to Frederick II. The French Kings offered their protection to the Popes and in exchange, the Popes "authorized" the Capet family to subdue Languedoc, a Cathar stronghold. Their joint venture is known as the Albigensian Crusade.

Later on, the Popes sent church "inquirers" known as Inquisitors to investigate heresy in Languedoc. In reality, "untold numbers of persons" were probably not burned, but many died or were imprisoned. Of the more than 5,000 persons known to have been interrogated by the Inquisitors in Languedoc, about 50 were burned at the stake. Lambert says everything else is speculation since most of the records were destroyed.

In Italy, the Ghibellines were allies of the German Emperors and enemies of the Guelphs who supported the Pope. Although Frederick II had sworn to root out heresy, his "rooting" was lax. Many of the Ghibbilines were Cathars, and since they kept a number of Italian cities friendy to his cause so he had no great incentive to destroy them. When Frederick II died, both the Ghibellines and the Cathars were at risk. Some were burned, but many escaped to Bosnia. The Cathars in Bosnia lived a relatively peaceful existence until Islam crushed the Balkans in the 15th Century.

According to Lambert, the Cathars probably would have died out eventually anyway. They did not believe in sexual reproduction. Also, most people became Cathars owing to family connections and did not really understand the "dual-God" aspects of the religion. The Cathar theology was confusing anyway, and as people became educated, they fell away from Cathar teachings.

Lambert says the Cathars did not take vows of poverty as some have suggested. They were from all walks of life, nobles to maids. The attraction of Catharism lay in it's emphasis on simplicity in this life, and the emotional comfort the 'perfects' offered regarding death and the next life. In an age when many Catholic clergy were distant and aloof, and the emphasis of the church was tithing and the aqusition of material wealth, the Cathar perfects were seen as the "real" Christians. St. Francis of Assis suggested one way to rid the Church of heresy was to preach directly to the people and live exemplary lives of love and compassion.

The Inquisitors became very powerful after the 13th Century, until the 16th Century. Lambert says after the Cathars and other heretics were no longer a threat, "Witchcraft fell under the purview of the inquisitors." The result was "Malleus maleficarum" or the "bible of the witch-hunters." He says the "witch craze spanned the Reformation and blackens the reputations of Catholics and Protestants alike." Burning people was not exclusive to the Catholic Church.

Interesting
Interesting aulthough highly improbable scenarios are depicted(satyagrah in midwest over family home),
not a serious fiction.
It can be some what thought provoking, to someone
who may not be familiar with eastern/indian philosophy.

This book was magnificent.
I absolutely loved this book. The author told the story of Jeffery in a way that made me feel like I was there watching it happen.

The Hippo Club
Occassionally I find a childrens book which captures the imagination of my sons. They thoroughly enjoyed this first book, and we asll hope that there will be more to come in the future. It is a wonderful read for 3-8 year olds, blending the magic of toy animals who come to life, and their adventures, especially with their battle with the next doors cat.

The Hippo Club
It is difficult to find good books which will appeal to children from 3-8 years. This book, with its original idea of using soft toys, forming a club, and their battle with next doors cat, captivated my children, and they are eager to read it most nights. I hope that this is the first of many such books, as my children are eager to follow the adventures for the 4 hippos and their camel friend.

Fast read, little content
This book reads quickly as if it were a sit-com. I know,I know, the book is based on a sit-com, nonetheless, you would expect it to have slightly more actual content than it does. The book would be good a good starting point for young boys who are reluctant readers or for anyone who just wants to quickly get through a book, not have to think while reading and be done with it.

Very Funny Book!
If you want to read a book that will make you laugh, get this one. It's just like watching an episode of the television series and is perfect for young readers. The tone and style are exactly like the show and we really have the opportunity to get into Malcolm's head. Great fun!

How the Shaman Stole the Moon: In Search of Ancient Prophet- Scientists from Stonehenge to the Grand Canyon

Interesting and thought provoking.
How did ancient peoples accurately depict the arrival of solar eclipses? They didn't have a NASA website, the concept that the earth was round, or the benefit of Copernicus' earth is not the center of the universe concept (not published until the 1500's). The author looks from Stonehenge to the walls of the Grand Canyon to the ancient Mayans to try to think how the ancients thought. It's a sort of how did we know what we knew before we should have known it puzzle. There's a lot about the degrees of the horizon, but it's still an interesting look at our past. If you're interested in native American culture then you'll enjoy the book more. While the author admits the difficulty in proving his ideas, he does outline 13 methods that might have been used and makes many interesting observations about the way things could have been.

Sorry to see it out of print.
As a trained astronomer and someone who has both taught the subject at the college level and been published in the sub-field of native american astronomy, I was amazed that someone from outside the field could make such a valuable contribution as this book is. It's both technically sound and entertaining to read. The explanations and arguments should be easily graspable by the educated layperson or novice at astronomy. They're plausible without being outlandish.

The book is especially good at giving an appreciation for how difficult it was for early scientists to acquire the basic understandings we now take for granted. Highly recommended to those interested in either prehistoric southwest peoples or the arcane area of the development of non-western timekeeping, calendars, and observational astronomy.
