Essential for Bach lovers
The title and the alphabetical format of this book seems uninspiring, but actually it is a veritable treasure. It has an excellent article or entry on almost anything you might wonder about Bach, and the format lets you just to look up the issue alphabetically. The appendices also ease the effort-- there is a thematic list of all entries, a BWV list with years, a text list of the first lines of all arias/choruses, first performance dates of cantatas... The tone of the book is scholarly but very readable.

So if you have ever wondered what was the trumpet like in Bach's day, the real meaning of well-tempered, who P.D.Q. Bach is, what did Christian Ludwig of Brandenburg do with the concertos, you need to get this book. Indispensable for anyone who has been bitten by the Bach bug; it will appeal to the starter and the expert alike.

Recommended for any collection concentrating on Japanese art
Japan At The Dawn Of The Modern Age is a specialty item which is recommended for any collection concentrating on Japanese art. Woodblock prints from the Meiji era are presented in a series of over 90 color illustrations which go beyond the traditional perception of Japanese subjects as gardens and geishas. These prints depicted current events and were painted in vivid colors, and Japan At The Dawn Of The Modern Age captures their vibrant spirit, along with history essential to understanding their meaning.

Brilliant
I Found this book extremely interesting. The story plot was good and the characters were realistic. This series is about a small group of school reporters and a bicycle deliverary service. The main characters are Amanda "Mandy" the Editior and Mick "michael" the Deliverary service chief. in this book in particular, they together have to solve the mystery of who in the prebby school Amanda goes to wants to prevent a news paper story that amanda has written to be printed. I found the ending of this story completely unexpected. This story was a good introduction to the Hart & Soul series.

Knowing Me - Knowing You: Exploring Personality Type and Temperament
Published in Paperback by Soc for Promoting Christian (August, 1993)
Authors: Malcolm Goldsmith and Martin Wharton
Amazon base price: $19.95

Enthralling Intro to MBTI

Although only one amongst a number of introductory works on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), _Knowing Me, Knowing You_ has the distinction of being one of the most readable and enjoyable. To anyone interested in personality psychology it would be next to impossible to lay this book down without finishing it cover to cover. The book is simply too enthralling and pleasurable to read.

While Isabel Myers, developer of the MBTI, has elucidated her theory in _Gifts Differing_, this work is far better organized--a boon for those without or with little understanding of the MBTI. Learning about the MBTI thus becomes not painless, but totally addicting.

Almost as a bonus, the last chapters provide insights on the connection between personality and religious inclinations, as well as varying attitudes towards the Christmas holidays.

Deciphering Lacan
Bowie's summaries of Lacanian psychoanalysis are both clear and complete. The organization of the book by broad topics (such as "Symbollic, Imaginary,Real...and True"), rather than by individual works, allows a Lacanian novice an overview of things to come, as well as an invaluable conceptual scaffolding that makes reading works such as "Ecrits" tolerable and comprehensible.

How to understand more about others--and ourselves.
I recognized the author's name from his many years on the NY Times. But this book was more interesting. I guess it was written for young adults. But even in middle-age I came away understanding much more about Canada--and the United States. He has a special knack for teaching large lessons through the small story and the accumulation of very interesting details. I had not realized how much I did not know about that next-door country. Now I understand the news better and I enjoyed getting to that point. What more could I ask from a book? I'm going to track down Malcolm's other books; there's a new one on hockey, I heard.

A Very Fun Read!
Malcolm Shuman is a very knowledgeable writer. All the books in his Alan Graham series are full of fun facts and legend. In "The Last Maya", Mr. Shuman explores the legends of the Mayas and that they were influenced by the Europeans long before Columbus arrived. As always, Mr. Shuman makes for an interesting agreement, based on facts and fantasy. This mix makes for a very fun read. His hero, Alan Graham is a very interesting character. Not the Mr. Perfect that appear in so many books. Alan is a flawed character just trying to understand himself and others, with a lot of baggage from all his travels. The adventure in this book, takes the series out of Louisiana and into the heart of Mexico. It was fun reading about some of my favorite characters in a new surrounding. I have always found Malcolm Shuman's books fun, interesting and entertaining, I think if you like your mysteries with a little history tossed in, this is a series for you. So pick it up and start enjoying the fun.

What a delightful little book!
Recipes, aromatherapy, herb pillow directions, advice on soaps, nosegays, potpourri, it even includes directions for making lavender wands and bath bags! Each two page spread has its own theme, my favorite was the end of the book, entitled 'Tea Time' with recipes for lavender biscuits and directions on how to make lavender tea. This little tiny book (only 41 pages) is packed with beautiful pictures and loads of information. My only regret is that I didn't get the rest of the books in this set.
