Engaging and well-done while remainging accessible
Of all Asante's work, this book (compiled in 1993 during the height of Afrocentricity's platform and Malcolm X mania) stands out as one of the more accessible and endearing tomes of his oeuvre. Despite the eye-catching title (for its time), we are treated to some excellent essays on a variety of subjects, which is a refreshing departure from much of the metathoery of his other work. One of the things that people charge Afrocentrists with is not fashioning practical positions on contemporary issues, and justifiably so in many cases. Asante deals with genocide in Africa, Malcolm X, gender and television with aplomb, heart and a solid voice.

A must for Asante fans, and a greta book for essayists, debators and peopel who love challenging, original thought.

Malcolm X As They Knew Him

Insightful!
This book does a fantastic job of painting Malcolm X in the eyes of those who knew him and were touched by him. It really gives an insight into the life of one of the most influential men in history. I loved what Maya Angelou, Eldridge Cleaver, and Robert Penn Warren had to say. Other highlights are the interview with Claude Lewis, Malcolm's last TV interview with Pierre Barton, and On The Air with Joe Rainey, in which Malcolm discusses his split with Muhammad. It was secretely recorded by the FBI.

Of course Alex Haley's "The Autobiography of Malcolm X" is a must read as well!

The Management of Human Resources in Chinese Industry

China HR is quickly moving from politics to performance.
After I spent 4 years in China in the field of HRD and training, it is clear that the area of HRM in CHINA is still an underappreciated function. The focus on CHINA today is the bottom line and immediate money, yet serious investment needs to made in the area of human capital and HR development for CHINA to emerge as a global competitor. The HR function will continue to grow and emerge as reality sets in and CHINA realizes that people development, not exports, develop economies. The long term future for HR is bright in CHINA, but now it is still an emerging issue.

Many of China's SOEs are rooted in political praise and dogma, and not grounded in productivity and performance. China is desperate to change this, and Dr. Warner's book clearly points out the magnitude of change necessary in several large SOE's in the Dongbei area of CHINA. The book is well written, though the terms used and statistical jargon have a dulling effect on reader interest. The book is a scientific study presented in the format of relevant information. Another further critique is that CHINA's SOEs are not the wave of the future, the MNC's are, and CHINESE companies must emulate these Western models if they are going to have global success. China's new market economy with "Chinese characteristics" needs to change to "global characteristics". No doubt Dr. Warner is someone who is very familiar with Chinese bureacracy, compensation and benefits, low worker performance, "xiagang", and production quota's, along with its many remnants of Marxism that the new economic Czar, Zhu Rongji, is desperate to root out. I give Dr. Warner's book 4 out of 5 stars, due to information and focus content. Dr. Warner is an "old China hand" yet CHINA is changing so quickly that you can't recognize the skyline if you don't return every 6 mos., his book is already 4 plus years old and now that Deng is dead, things are changing at an exponential pace. Some of the factories he wrote about then are no doubt being downsized, merged, or shuttered even as this is written.

Terrific book for Marketeers
I have read this book over 20 times. I have purchased 5 copies and given them away to clients. This book is wonderful for helping you create a marketing plan. The cartoons make it easy to read (what is inherently a boring subject) about marketing plans.

Medieval Heresy: Popular Movements from the Gregorian Reform to the Reformation

Readable Overview of Heretical Theology
Lambert's _Medieval Heresy_ provides a surprisingly readable overview of the major European heretical movements of the Middle Ages. Readers interested in Church history and the development of Catholic and Protestant theology will find useful insights. Historical heresies also have a surprising resonance with modern charismatic cults.
To cover the vast array of major heretical movements over several centuries, the book assumes a basic grounding in medieval history and culture. It is readable without such a grounding, but may be more confusing.
A short glossary of heretics is provided. A timeline of major events would have been useful.

lovely pictures
Great reproductions: gorgeous glowing colours in all their glory. Plodding text, though. Some good scholarly work - and for the first time Millais' later paintings are being taken with the seriousness they deserve. But that's about it really. We still get told the ol' story for the most part.

Buy it for he pictures (well worth it), for the information (worth it), but not the ideas (there aren't that many).

A Classic-collectors's window to car values in Europe
For the international classic-car-collector this is a comprehensive book on the different antique and classic cars that are available in the European market, mainly in the UK. It covers mostly the known models in detail, sometimes lacking in the more popular ones. The pricing of the Guide is based on the British market but as far as I could compare to the actual values I encountered - there are differences (but that may be acceptable). The model pricing is based on the 1-2-3 codition and not on the 1-6 classification popular in the USA, but is fair. I found it very useful (as the managing secretary of the Israel Classic & Collectors Vehicle Club) in aiding many of our members to value their purchases from abroad and while searching for finds in other European countries - with a very good feedback on most parts. The book is also a good refernce for details on rare cars and models.

Excellent apocalyptic virus storline, similar to The Stand.
AIDS related virulent strain is released upon the world. The story centers around a group of survivors from NYC. The survivors eventually decide to look for greener grass after rival groups attack. The story chronicles their crosscountry journey battling effects of the disease, jealousy, greed, bandits, etc. The storyline will remind you of The Stand, but without the mystical leader

The Modern British Novel

Adequate coverage of British novel
Bradbury, an author himself, presents the evolution of the British novel from the late 1800s. He gives good summaries at the beginnings of each chapter, and each chapter builds on previous ones chronologically. He is sometimes spare in his treatment of authors we are more familiar with (e.g., Joseph Conrad, Virginia Woolf), and I suggest this because his other book "The Modern World: Ten Great Writers" gives much more on them. Also, his occasional bias, like against Bloombury, is jarring, but the book does introduce one to many British writers unknown across the Atlantic as well as bringing in adopted British writers like Rushdie. It does admirably well in its overall coverage for a single volume, and that is more than one could expect.
