Astronomy Fundamentals and Frontiers

An Outstanding College-Level. . .
. . .introduction to Astronomy from one of America's foremost Astronomers.

I have a confession to make. Astronomy has always fascinated me -- ever since I was a very small child. When other 2nd graders were talking about whatever it is that normal 2nd graders talk about, I was talking about Clyde Tombaugh, Sir William Herschel, John C. Adams, etc. -- the men who discovered Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. I remember scanning the skies for hours on end with a 6 inch Newtonian reflector borrowed from my uncle. I could go on and on -- but I think you understand my point. I have always loved Astronomy.

This wonderful book should be back in print. It is a readable (and beautiful) college-level introduction to the basic ideas, concepts, and history of this fascinating science. It is perfectly accessible for the layman -- and even for those previously unfamiliar with Astronomy.

Dr. Jastrow's text is clear and well-written, and the illustrations provided suit the discussion.

A worthy book.

DK Eyewitness early reader: Beastly Tales
For those with children of a very curious nature, these are the books for you. Everyone in the house couldn't put this one down. Excellent pictures, not just drawings. Are they the real thing? Children will also be introduced to sonar and mountianeers. Science becomes very interesting.

An uneven but fascinating collection
A fascinating if uneven survey of many literary impressions of this unique American city. Some of the works are outstanding and evoke the peculiar Berkeley atmosphere with rare precision. Others appear merely to have been grabbed at random out of the results of a database search engine. But overall, to anyone who is drawn to this city's uniqueness, reading it is a wonderful opportunity to reflect, remember and cherish the town.

Biological Warfare in the 21st Century: Biotechnology and the Proliferation of Biological Weapons
Published in Hardcover by Brasseys, Inc. (July, 1994)
Author: Malcolm Dando
Amazon base price: $40.00
Average review score:

Recommended reading by nervegas.com
Malcom Dando writes a clear review of public assertions fo the impact of BW (UN, SIPRI, etc.); then augments this with a review of military literature, some remarkably considered still classified by the proponent.

The author presents different biotech methods and research endeavors to display potential pathways of acquiring BW agents. Finally the book resolves this with a discussion of verification approaches.

The author succeeds in most places, but fails in one critical area - a military comprehension of BW. As the author is a biologist that has focused his attentions towards disarment issues - this is not unexpected, and common with the much of the disarment-based CBW literature. Thus there is some bluring between the lines of public health diseases and technologies, and those of peculiar interest to military endeavors.

For a person not familiar with past BW activities, and biotechnologies, and disarmament efforts, this would make a good primer - the authors intent being reasonably achieved.

Classic British Understatement
At a period when Britian stood alone, in Northern Africa a group began harassing Rommel and the Axis behind their lines. They lived off the land, evaded capture after every raid, and were so far over the top the only TV series made about them was considered too unbelievable (The show was called "The Rat Patrol"). To hide the group they were given a meaningless name - Special Air Services, and a series of unit id's that hid the real size. This is about the early days in the SAS by the original medical officer. It was written at the end of the war but the events were still very vivid to him. His descriptions of the people involved with the SAS and the day-to-day activities are enlightening. Compared with today's exploitation books, reading stories about how they would blow-up 40 planes in an evening then only report 25 so they weren't accused of overstating their accomplishments and the ways the German's would always hunt them down after a raid, make me appreciate how brave these people were compared with the false bravado of today's books about the special forces.

Highly recommended.

MacDonald's "Brahms" is informative yet analitically lacking
MacDonald's biography of Brahms is insightful and informative benefiting from findings in recent Brahms scholarship as well as from the authors command of language and knowledge of the art of music. Its only fault, albeit a rather prominent one, is the author's need to comment at least a few words on every work of Brahms's. This becomes tedious and the reader is left with a feeling of unsatisfied curiosity as if he or she is reading program notes to a concert he will not hear. MacDonald, however, reserves his more detailed accounts for Brahms's more important and popular major works (his all too brief analysis of the Fourth Symphony leaves one wishing he would write a book entirely devoted to that masterpiece) a trait which reveals the author's keen analytical mind. The book would have benefited greatly if the author had devoted space given to smaller or less significant pieces to a more extensive discussion of the composers major works

food to compliment good wine
I got this cookbook when I first moved out on my own and had to learn to feed myself. The recipes range from simple to comlex; all the ones I have tried are a taste treat. The asparagus chicken has been a favorite at many a party. Even in today's calorie and health conscious world there are recipes to enjoy here. My first copy from 1986 got destroyed in a minor flood and I will be replacing this well used cookbook.

Cambridge History of Hellenistic Philosophy
An impressive volume in terms of the depth and scope. A "must have" for anybody interested in the subject, and based upon the surge of books on Hellenistic philosophy in the last decade there will be a good number of people among those "must haves." Even though it is primarily a reference book, many will want to read it from cover to cover. One disappointment, however: the editors seem to disply the usual academic prejudices against the more "wayward" Hellenistic thinkers, such as those who gave serious consideration to astrology and magic. One would expect a fuller accounting of Hellenistic astronomy, at least, if the astrology is too much for them. The volume is also surprisingly neglectful (a mere five pages) toward mathematics and its relationship to the amply treated subjects of Logic, Ethics, and Physics.
