Mathematics for Economists

Excellent for Non-Quant Geek Economics Students
This book is a gentle introduction to the math used in microeconomics at advanced undergrad or graduate levels. The book assumes nothing or at least very little in the way of math preparation. The authors could point out more pitfalls, but these two mathematics professors write beautifully and simply about what is, for some of us, a complicated topic. They start with things as simple as Cartesian graphs and they move on through calculus, differential equations and various forms of linear and matrix algebra. The econ examples are excellent and concise, but are basic and not of theoretical interest. No one is going to learn Cournot monopoly theory or auction theory here, but you will learn how to read a book like Wolfstetter's Topics in Microeconomics without wishing you could throttle the excessively brief and cryptic author of that interesting text. One wishes in general that economists could write like the authors of this book, but they can't. Nowhere have I seen such obtuse notation and heartless math presentation as in microeconomic theory. But econ is micro, and even if a lot of microeconomists can't teach, write, or present math, they are the roadblock to understanding much of finance, applied game theory, and matters of technical management and public policy. This book covers continuous and static analysis tools, not probability or statistics in any detail. It is truly innovative among the books I have seen in treating mathematical economics. Micro theory is the flunk-out course for econ majors. This book could get most through. A patient non-quantitative person can learn it right out of the book without lectures or high anxiety. I suspect the seriously macho econ folks will hide the fact that they own it, but they would probably benefit too at least from topics where they stumble a bit or feel a slight discomfort. It would also be a worthwhile text for Ph.D. candidates who want to prepare for comprehensive exams either oral or written, or for people like economic sociologists who vaguely wish to be taken seriously.

A remarkable book to learn or review material
This is a great book for medical students, residents, and even attending physicians, who wish to have succinct description of key medical syndromes and their therapies. It is perfect for getting an overview; this might be all you need in a particular instance, or else the discussion in this text will provide a great framework for further, more detailed, study from one of the standard large textbooks of medicine or a journal article. I have found that my understanding of an advanced treatment of a topic is greatly improved by having a simplified overview first, and this book is unbeatable at that.If you take a weekend and read it cover-to-cover, you will find that on Monday morning, your knowledge and confidence in internal medicine is greatly improved.

Mensonge: My Strange Quest for Structuralism's Hidden Hero
Published in Hardcover by Daedalus Books (October, 1987)
Author: Malcolm Bradbury

Malcolm's Mensonge
It is interesting, for those of us who know French, that Mensonge translates literally into English as "falsehood." The theorist, Mensonge, that Bradbury proposes to introduce to us is mysterious, vague, and quite possibly a person operating under the falsehood that the name "Mensonge" implies. No one seems to know, including the author of this book, who Mensonge really is, nor does anyone know why he is important. Bradbury's book is a delightfully simple tour through the history of modern and postmodern criticism that is wholly ironic without being cynical. Bradbury's goal is to show how the exciting, but ultimately vertiginous practice of literary theory swallows, as Foucault points out, the writing subject, or the author, whole. "Mensonge," or "falsehood" is one such theorist who has been swallowed into the text he writes (or does not write), and we are thankful to Mr. Bradbury for rescuing him in this wonderful, if slim book.

The opus magnum in my opinion.
Gerald Durrell was the first to claim that he was not a writer, he gave that honour up to his brother Lawerence. Gerald wrote first and foremost to pay for the Zoo in Jersey that was his life. Many of his books are hilarious accounts of his exploits in collecting the animals for his zoo. When he added an account of his youth in Corfu the book "My family and other animals" became a huge success, much to his surprise. It was some time before he wrote the absolutely hilarous "Rosie is my relative" which was his first work of true fiction. In this book I believe he reaches the pinnacle of his ability. Not as bellyachingly funny as "Rosie" this book is more poignant and very beautifully written. It is more poignant since it describes the rediscovery of the Mockery Bird which is a metaphor for the Dodo, that most famous of extinct species. Durrell fought all his life to save species from extinction and so I think that there is a special hope in his heart that emerges in this book. A hope for the future of animals.

My Strange Quest for Mensonge
Published in Paperback by Penguin USA (Paper) (August, 1988)
Author: Malcolm Bradbury
Amazon base price: $6.95
Average review score:

I am crushed! A profoundly funny parody of academia!
I lent my copy to so many people that I don't know where it ended up. I was looking this up to order a copy, and I was horror striken to learn it is O.P.

Let me put it this way: this is the funniest book ever written about academia, and the best academic parody ever written. The book is the recounting of an attempt to gather concrete evidence concerning Mensonge, who is the deconstructionist's deconstructionist. In "What is an Author?" Foucault argues that in the creative act, it is not the individual who write the work, but all of society that writes the work through the individual who serves merely as the nexus for society. Mensonge is the fictional author of one of the most difficult of deconstructionist classics, of which only a few dozen copies exist, and each one of which differs from all the other copies, because the type was changed randomly by the incompetent printers who produced the final copies. The title of the work in English would be (I can't remember the French title precisely, which is the only title given in the book, and I can't double check this, because I don't know where my copy is) FORNICATION AS A CULTURAL ACT. Mensonge takes the Foucaultian insight a step further, and argues that in the act of fornication, it is not the individual but society as a whole that is engaged in the act.

This book is a priceless jewel for anyone who has studied any literary theory in the past thirty years or even heard the name Derrida. Bradbury's comments about academia are hysterical, the near-encounters and Mensonge sitings he describes are delightfully surreal, and the style in which he pursues his subject unyieldingly real in an obvious absurd situation. The bibliography is worth the cost of the book, with, for instance, genuine writings by Barthes alongside patently made-up articles on Mensonge.

If no publisher takes this book up again, the MLA should print it and distribute it for free.

Native Ways: California Indian Stories and Memories
This wonderful book has been a treasured resource in my classroom. It has some outstanding historical and modern photos of Native Californians in authentic settings, with their crafts, etc. The text is great, too. For instance, I wrote up an info page on Miwok government, then I had the kids read in Native Ways about Captain John. A friend of his was describing how he was a respected leader and his qualities that made him so... it exactly matched the info article. It has some good legends, one of which I'm using for a retelling practice, but what I appreciate most are the first person accounts and interviews of Native people explaining themselves and their way of life. They are short and a good length for 3rd and 4th grade readers. Enjoy, everyone.
