Shirley Chisholm
This book was okay. It didn't really explain a lot of big important details about her life. The author explained too much about little things. I was expecting more so that I could have more information for my book report.

Not a good book for students of forest ecology
This book is the required text for a class on trees and forests that I am currently taking at UC Davis. It is an imposing text and reads much like a journal of ecology. It is far from a good study aid for undergrads and grad students in forest ecology. However, given its copious literature citations, it could easily serve as a reference text for an advanced undergraduate course or graduate seminar.

The book comes full of graphs, charts and pictures, but much of it is superfluous. Key terms and concepts are not fully explained for initiates, a glossary of terms is non-existent for quick reference, and brief, detailed summaries of each chapter are not provided at the end of each chapter for time-pressed students. The book also contains numerous photographs of forest stands, maps, diagrams, and charts; however, because none of these are in color, they lose much of their visual impact, detail and valuable utility. Furthermore, there are no study questions at the end of each chapter for exam preparation. As such, initiates to forestry or landscape ecology looking for a good introduction to the field are pretty much out of luck.

Although the book has gone through four editions, it is still quite far from being a good textbook. In addition to the above mentioned comments, the writing style needs to be tighter. However, negatives aside, teachers and educators looking for examples of many of the concepts in forest ecology for use in class discussions will find this an invaluable text.

God's Squad
Published in Paperback by Zondervan (06 June, 2000)
Author: Phil Shirley
Amazon base price: $11.00
Average review score:

Leading soccer fans to the Lord
"God's Squad" focuses on 11 soccer players who have made names for themselves in the UK and worldwide, and examines the role played by their faith in Christ both personally and on the soccer pitch.

Part of the book's attraction is the fact that it is a compact read, divided into 11 easily digested chapters, each devoted to one player. This is sure to entice soccer fans who are used to reading terse match reports in newspapers.

Yet this is ALSO where "God's Squad" disappoints: Because the book is short, the author tends to gloss over details that need expanding...

For instance, if one particular player suddenly felt the need to turn to God because his family life was falling apart, that's all you are going to read about it. I respect the author for not adopting a tabloid approach in dealing with the players' personal lives; we don't need intimate or irrelevant details. Yet, these tales of conversion and 'seeing the light' would make fuller sense to the reader if the author took more time - and space - to write about these pivotal moments and their full build-up and impact.

As a sports writer, the author's accent remains on detailing important games. And this is sure to please soccer-loving readers. However, I feel "God's Squad" is not fully developed either as a sport book or as a Christian one.

Yet the concept of combining the two is a great idea: Soccer players are huge role models and "God's Squad" can surely help bring God closer to avid soccer fans seeking answers to their deeper needs and life-questions.

Historical seeds of hope
I would have given 5 stars for a valuable booklet for its time. Now it is superseded by "Improved Test Scores, Attitudes, and Behaviors in America's Schools : Supervisors' Success Stories" (Nov. 1999). The last chapter: "Analysis of Change and Leadership Style" is still interesting. Planned change is supposed to go through 8 stages. 1. Awareness. 2. Knowledge. 3. Personalization. 4. Implementation. 5. Consequences. 6. Collaboration. 7. Refocusing. 8. Evaluating. The change agents tend to be idealistic pragmatists--persons who are receptive, open, goal-directed and adaptive. The management style is collaborative, followed by benevolent despot, and a general rejection of middle-of-the-road approaches. "What is most strongly denounced is laissez-faire, which suggests a chaotic, permissive approach characterized by the educator who buries his or her head in the sand of the organization on a regular basis, allowing staff members to do their own thing." (pp. 66-67) The world needs good leaders. This booklet gives some models.

Monitoring and Evaluating Small Business Projects: A Step by Step Guide for Private Development Organizations

Step by Step
This is an excellent primer on monitoring and evaluation for small business development projects. The techniques it promotes are adaptable to a variety of businesses, from rural agriculture to larger manufacturing operations. They present M&E methods for working with non-traditional business people, including illiterates, and those with limited financial/accounting knoweledge. The book's strength in it's breadth might also be considered a weakness, once you know what type of business you're focusing on, you'll have to do some more digging to develop the specific evaluative measures pertinent to your project goals, be they social, environmental, etc.

This is a great source book , but that is all !
A well written text by a Pulitzer Prize winner on the Sandinsta Revolution with a day by day chronology and detail of the preamble to the war, the insurrection, post war coverage on the contra insurgency and sandinista electoral procedures. Excellent source-book , a must read, though a one sided one. Her perspective is an anti-sandinista polemic: The 1927-1933 Sandino affair is shown minimized. She covers the insurrection depicting the vanguard of the Sandinista command as few in numbers, making it difficult to see how a handful of revolutionaries managed to trigger a nation-wide up-rising. Then, she becomes critical of the Sandinista electoral procedures and displays a Contra as legitimate dissidents. Being Shirley essentially a journalist, her work should be taken as such, as that of a good reporter, the disclipine in which she won the Pulitzer Prize. However; her elaboration and conclusions only prove that a journalist is not academically equipped to make interpretations of their observations, and should limit themselves to report what they see or hear. This book should be read with this in mind. A must read, though for its contents.

Interesting, but not groundbreaking
Mr. Green reuintes America with one of the best known TV"bands' of the early 1970's in his book. Although the song analysis seems a little over the top (The show was concieved to cash in on the monkees and other acts where EVERYBODY sang and played an instrument)for this book, it shows just how dedicated Mr. Green is.

In a period when the dilemas of cultural upheval, war and political turmoil were becoming harder to conceal from the average middle class suburbs, this show might have helped some people. Despite the psychedelic graphics, this "family" was other wise indistinguishable from their neighborhs. That balancing act is problaly what contributed to their ultimate sucess.

Interesting concept. More than a dozen authors = one novel.
A book written by a bunch of North Carolina authors, each writing one chapter. As a NC native I had to see what this book was all about. The book lacked depth and jumped around. However, it was worth the read just to see how this large a group of authors work with one another. Also, if you live or have lived in the Triangle area, you'll recognize the scenery of this novel.
